One drive

A month or so ago my work laptop was broken, and work said to use my laptop and one drive to connect to their servers
I downloaded one drive onto my laptop and definitely logged in with my work username and passwords
All my personal home documents uploaded onto the work drive ! Obviously I didn't want them on the work drive, so I deleted them from the work drive
Now I've tried to use my home documents (not via one drive), and I can't find them on the laptop
There loads of things on there that I need
I carnt even seem to find photos
I've removed one drive from the laptop, and restarted it a few times.
How do I persuade my laptop to give my access?!
I don't want to involve work IT, because it's personal stuff on there
Thanks

Oh, it's now not letting me save documents either!
I think it's still logged in as one drive somehow, also I've deleted one drive itself
Can anyone help?
I just need to convince my laptop to log in as me, rather than one drive
I've got all my budgeting and loads of personal files on there
Thanks

It is a little hard to follow but I guessing when you first set up one drive it was set up to sync with documents on your computer automatically. You would have had to accept this.

When you say you are looking for your personal documents, where/how are you looking? When you open up the file explorer, what is showing on the left hand side?

Let me paly around with mine

Sorry hillrunning, I did try to make my post clear Blush

I've had it before where I've had a work one drive and a personal one drive on the same device and it does get a bit confusing, or it is easy to be thinking you are saving something on one and actually it is going to the other.

Have you tried right clicking on the cloud on the task bar I found I had to go on there and fiddle about with how it was syncing. (If I remember I had some sort of sync issue).

thisplaceisweird · 23/11/2022 11:23

Are you saying when you deleted them from the drive you also deleted the original files from your computer? Sounds like you may have...
They won't have moved from their original location

Sorry hillrunning, I did try to make my post clear Blush

Don't be sorry, it is just one of thoes things that will always be hard to explain in writing rather than showing someone.

I think what's happened here is that you had your own docs stored in the folder called 'Documents' on your laptop. Then when you installed OneDrive, it would have asked you (or possibly just guessed) that you wanted to sync your 'Documents' folder with OneDrive, which then caused all your personal docs to upload to your work's OneDrive.

By deleting them from there, you've deleted them from your own machine. I'll just test that now to confirm it.

However, don't despair, how long ago did you do the deletion? They may all be in your work OneDrive recycle bin. Open up your work OneDrive in a browser (go to office.com, log in with your work username and password, go to the '9 dot' icon in the top left hand corner and choose OneDrive). Now click on Recycle Bin and have a look at what you can see.

I don't actually know how the OneDrive app deletes the local files on your machine, so it's worth having a look in your computer's Recycle Bin as well.

Gggaaa
A new problem
I thought I'd removed one drive. But there the bloody thing is
It looks like it's still uploading new personal documents to the drive
FFS
Whilst simultaneously been unable to access my "old" documents

I'm really concerned about opening one drive on this laptop
I don't want all my home documents uploading
Although I appreciate this may have happened anyway....

That's fine for now @StayAGhost let's get this sorted out and then you can remove OneDrive (or not). It's actually probably better that it's there.

I just deleted something from my 'Documents' folder on OneDrive and it has deleted it from the Documents folder on my machine, so I think that is what you've done.

I CAN see it in my computer's Recycle Bin, so I would have a look in there before you do anything else.

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 11:32

Would it be safer to use one drive on work's laptop
Now repaired
It would have been loads less stress to just wait for repair tbh

For now, you need to use your own laptop. Have a look in the Recycle Bin and see if your files are in there.

Hillrunning · 23/11/2022 11:34

I've just looked and can see documents in my one drive recycle bin from September. Then at the very bottom there is another option to pick 'second stage recycle bin' so check that too.

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 11:34

Trippot
Has it removed stuff from my actual laptop, despite been logged on as a work login??
I really do appreciate this btw
If I'd realised this could ever happen, no way would I have used one drive
I was definitely logged in as work

FFS
In my PERSONAL recycle bin is WORK stuff

Yes, I think it has removed personal files from your laptop. I do think work should have explained this to you. There was almost certainly no need for you to install the OneDrive app at all, and in fact they may have meant for you to just access files through a browser, but it's too late now. (I think if you want to involve them in fixing this problem, you certainly could do - they need to tighten up their advice to colleagues who don't have access to a work device).

What's done it is this setting in OneDrive. It's OneDrive trying to be helpful, backing up your Documents, Pictures and Desktop folders from your machine. Don't change anything yet, though - let's try to get the files recovered first.

Can you find the files you're looking for in the Recycle Bin on your computer?

One drive
tribpot · 23/11/2022 11:43

(I should say, OneDrive hasn't actually removed personal files from your laptop, you did that but you didn't know what the effect of doing it would be).

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 11:49

Thanks tripot
Yes, all I was trying to do was access a work document, work on it at home and send it back up to the servers
It looks like one-drive has infected my entire laptop
My DD homework from last night has been stored on a WORK server , from what I can see
It's not letting me save to c drive at all

OP posts:
tribpot · 23/11/2022 11:54

Okay well don't worry about that, all of that can be sorted out once you've found the deleted files.

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 11:56

I don't get how it's gathered information from my laptop when I was logged in via work username and password?
Can it just do that?
<belatedly realises this is a stupid question >

OP posts:
StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 11:57

Do I need to log onto one drive on the personal laptop?
ATM I feel like burning the bloody thing!!

OP posts:
tribpot · 23/11/2022 12:01

Have you looked in the Recycle Bin on your personal laptop? If you're not sure where it is, you can type 'Recycle Bin' into the search box next to the Windows button in the bottom left-hand corner. There is probably a shortcut to it on your desktop.

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 12:03

Yes, the laptop recycle bin is where I found out that that some documents that I thought were been saved to c, are in fact, been saved to one drive
I've logged into one-drive on home laptop (despite thinking I'd deleted the link)
Im at the home page now..

OP posts:
tribpot · 23/11/2022 12:04

Right so at this point, have you found the personal documents and photos that you had lost? If so, have you restored them from the Recycle Bin?

StayAGhost · 23/11/2022 12:05

I've got cloud files and local files as locations
