I am a teacher and due back at work this week. I had my first child last year and had no intention of returning but did. I don't want to go back, the panic/fear has already set in. I've spent all week sitting down to do planning for this term and just being incredibly unproductive.

The problem is my boss is amazing, she has done so much to make me feel settled,.constant check ins etc. She knows I have been struggling. But it's just not right and hate it every second I am there. I am medicated for anxiety but feel that's not touching the sides.

My question is, what can I be signed off for? I don't feel it's necessarily WRS in the typical way, it's I hate my job, I want to be at home with my little one, I can't focus on wr tasks.

Thank you. Can be it class as general stress/anxiety rather than work related stress?

So tired of hearing how school budgets are stretched. People like the OP just add to that.

My anxiety started when I was pregnant, had huge impact on my work and was medicated following a breakdown on Xmas day. Although better now the last month it has taken a huge downturn.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Thank you, that's interesting isn't it? From a mental health point of view, stress can be cured in two weeks. Like you say, GPs are ever so varied.

I feel exactly the same this half term. Genuinely hate it.

My issue is the hand in dates. I think I’d be happier moving to a new job, but financially I can’t leave without something to move to, and I can’t apply for anything because interviews are after the hand in date.

I now can’t leave until April!! So need something to come up before February half term, that doesn’t need me to start until April 30th. Feels impossible and feeling trapped makes it worse.

❤ I think you're right

We are a small school (30 children) and staff have far more non contact time than mainstream but I do appreciate what you are staying.

What sort of childcare do you have in place? Are you happy with it?

Is a drop in hours possible so you don't have to give up entirely and keep your hand in whilst DC is small?

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:31

I appreciate my op may not have read that way but I wasn't stating I didn't have genuine mental health issues, I just didn't think WRS was the best way to define it.

Thank you, I have been looking at being a virtual assistant as well setting up as a childminder on the days I do not work.

But some really good points, thank you.

So you need to be honest and just leave and stay home. You can't milk the sick pay system it's not right

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:34

There

If you don't want to work give your notice in. That does not make you sick.

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:35

A very fair point. Isn't sad that it has become the norm that people hate their jobs. That's not right.

Thank you, that's genuinely really sound advice.

A doctor will sign you off with a medical condition - anxiety or depression but not WRS.
You seem to be saying in your post if work isn't truly dreadful and your boss isn't truly awful, then it can't affect your anxiety. It absolutely can. So even with a supportive boss, your anxiety can absolutely be triggered.

My gp signed me off as a teacher with work related stress. 3 separate times.

Then l got Ill health retirement as teaching is indescribably terrible these days

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:37

A fake illness? Excellent. Thank you for that helpful comment.

If you are currently on mat leave you have not been at work to experience wrs. That is rediculous.

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:38

Hi there, I am not planning on getting signed off indefinitely. I could get up to a year if I was milking the system. It would be until Christmas at most.

Rosebirdie · 30/10/2022 09:38

Hours reduced it's definitely worth exploring

Thank you so much, I appreciate advice from someone who has first hand experience. Sadly unless you've experienced it you don't understand the pressure, mental strain and constant multitasking of it.

A good point
