Can I ask how many staff you like manage as a band 7 or does it just vary depending on what the role is?

Not a band 7, but work in the NHS as a manager and yes, it depends on the role - band 7s can manage small to large teams (plus budgets/projects/worksteams etc) - there are no set parameters.

HappyHamsters · 04/10/2022 19:38

what department is it? if it's a ward then you will be managing all your nursing staff but delegate some work to b6s and b5s.

Wowzel · 04/10/2022 19:41

Depends on the role

When i was a ward manager b7 i had 32 staff - mixture of b2, b5 and b6 hcas and nurses

dicdicnurse · 04/10/2022 19:41

I'm a band 7 ward manager and directly manage 30 people.

FreyaHazel · 04/10/2022 19:43

Directly line manage approx 15 members of staff - ambulance service

maxelly · 04/10/2022 19:44

Massively varies, in acute nursing it would often be a large team, up to 30+, not including students etc, but with a lot of structure and support from Band 6s in terms of the day to day supervision and input when you aren't personally around. In 24/7 services and with everyone working shifts a lot of departments run on a system where you have a designated 'line manager' who does your PDP and appraisal and so on, but then you'd have your 'duty' manager of whoever's the Band 7 in the department on that shift who will do work assignments and deal with issues in the moment - so you could be a 'manager' of a varying number of people at any given time...

Then again in specialised areas and some management roles it might only be 1 or 2 people, but they might be more varied in terms of their own grades e.g. a Band 2 and a 4 for instance, and their roles and workload might be less clearly structured and everything is on you personally in terms of training and supervising those people...

I’ve done everything from 80something, to one 😊

Threelittlebirds1 · 04/10/2022 20:04

I'm a band 7 AHP and manage nobody. In our department banding is based on clinical duties as well as line managing- so all team leads are band 7, but also those with more clinical responsibility.

SorrelForbes · 04/10/2022 20:15

I've managed 50+ (only about 5 direct reports luckily) to current role where it's 0!

dontgosummer · 04/10/2022 20:17

I managed 15, then 4 then 48 when I was a Band 7

shmiz · 04/10/2022 20:19

I’m 8a
I supervise several
i manage none

fudgefiesta · 04/10/2022 20:56

I manage no one and supervise one. I'm a part time AHP.

SilverCatStripes · 04/10/2022 21:00

Is this a role you are going for? This information should be in the job spec , if not then arrange a meeting with who is doing the job now or the named person to contact for more information.

Also, don’t be put off by the idea of line managing lots of people as a B7, you can delegate a lot of supervision tasks to your B6’s.

tealandteal · 08/10/2022 15:37

I directly line manage 3 and manage the workload of 3 others who are part in my team and part in another, but I’m not their line manager. Other band 7s in my Trust are responsible for 30+ but their role is different, for example I have a large budget and they have no spending power.

There are also band 8s with no direct line reports but with some sort of responsibility for the whole Trust so it really depends on the role.

BendingSpoons · 08/10/2022 15:42

AHP. I line manage 2 and supervise 2.

BendingSpoons · 08/10/2022 15:43

Should have said in my post above - LM 2, supervise 2 and co-ordinate a team of 8, but not directly managing them.

FlippertyGibberts · 08/10/2022 15:45

None, as it's not considered to be part of my role. This thread is really interesting!

DontKeepTheFaith · 08/10/2022 15:46

Very much role dependant. As a ward manager I manage about 25 people. My boss who is 8a only directly line manages me and one other but obviously has a supervisory role.

Some band 7 roles won’t have any line managing responsibilities.

Offredismysister · 08/10/2022 15:49

I’m community based & manage a skill mix nursing team. There are 30 staff in total but I only do a few appraisals & supervisions, the band 6’s do the rest. But I do all of the long term & complicated sickness, performance plans & HR meetings.

Runningintolife · 08/10/2022 15:50

None, I am a specialist clinician and have had three band 7 roles with managing anyone.

Furcoatandnoknickerz · 09/10/2022 17:53

Very interested in your opinions of a B3 being given the role of Supervisor / team lead?
Personally I think managers are completely exploiting this person , I have worked as a B3, the general JD clearly states no budgetary or staffing responsibilities.
This person is completely out of their depth, has no idea how to manage staff without coming across as rude and stomping off to wfh if she doesn’t get her own way!

How is it even possible to give a B2 a B3 job with B6 responsibilities?!

SilverCatStripes · 09/10/2022 19:50

Furcoatandnoknickerz

B3 shouldn’t have any supervision or budgetary responsibilities- even people who would ‘act up’ to cover a B4 role should be given a B4 post for those hours. It’s not even about the fact that they would be not be getting paid for the work they are doing it is about the individual’s personal responsibility to their role.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 09/10/2022 19:56

From 100-200 staff in my speciality.

But I manage an aspect of their working life so not from a HR perspective.
They do report to me but also have higher management to manage them from a HR aspect.

Furcoatandnoknickerz · 09/10/2022 20:16

@SilverCatStripes As I suspected. I really don’t know how this has been allowed to happen. It’s making for a very difficult working environment as I am struggling to take silly orders, nitpicking, micromanaging from a B3.
