Boss won't fill out my verification background check

My boss is a dick and she likes to think she can control people, infact she gets a kick out of it. I have returned from maternity leave in April and have been looking at other opportunities. I finally found one and got offered the job subject to background check. Problem is They have emailed my boss who won't fill out the form for me. It's a small company with no HR ( I actually gave the number of the girls that does our HR stuff to the hiring people but the have contact my boss) what can I do? She wants me to stay and is ignoring the emails from them asking for my details. They are going to pull the offer aren t they! It's gonna look like a red flag and I don't know what to do

Have you asked her why she hasn't filled it in yet? Does she have a line manager withing the organisation? If so I would email her and cc in her line manager asking her to fill it out. If she still doesn't do it. I would get in touch with the recruiter from the new company and explain the situation and offer them other contacts who can do it for you quickly.

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 15:54

No, we are a tiny company. She is the only person more senior than me. Because of this they need her to verify. I feel like I am be coerced and yet I feel helpless. She has until end of day today to complete form for the hiring company. I don't want to say too much as I don't want to be outing. Am I best to wait until I'm contacted and take it from there ? I feel so sick

So who is her manager?

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 15:56

I really want this job too as it's less hrs and close to my children school etc. I'm actually worried that if they contacted her via phone she would give me a bad reference to tarnish me.

@bellac11 it's her company

I think you'll just have to speak to the new job recruiter and explain but not slag her off and just hope for the best but I agree they'll think its a red flag

I think this is,all you can do, really. Shrs, under no obligation to do anything so you'll need to take the initiative. Have you talked to her with the form in hand so she has no alternative to either fill it in or explain why she won't?

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:01

@bellac11 it's making me so sick with nerves. And I agree it totally looks like a red flag. I feel like I'm being held hostage

Im not surprised and I think you are being held hostage, Im sure someone else will have better advice but good luck

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:03

@MarshaMelrose she got the formed emailed to her and told basically alluded that she wasn't going to fill it in. I don't want to say too much incase it's outing

midgetastic · 28/09/2022 16:07

Just tell the new people that she has told you she refuses - you believe because she doesn't want you to go

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:09

@midgetastic honestly I cannot believe I am in the situation I am in. I really want to cry

Can't you just approach her and say, I need you to fill it out and ask why she won't? Will that shame her? If not, you'll need to go back to the agency and see if there's an alternative way to get your background check done. It can't be that difficult. In a way, it speaks in your favour that she doesn't want you to leave.

Primprom · 28/09/2022 16:11

Can you threaten to sue her for damages?

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:12

I just worry that the recruiter will think I'm
Talking BS. I have already given another HR contact number on the form that I filled out so I'm hoping they will make contact with them if they get nowhere with my boss. But I don't know the process that a 3rd party go through to get in touch with references

No one will think you're lying. Honestly. That's not your problem. Your problem is getting the paperwork required for the new job in a timely way. If you've pressurised your boss and she still won't cooperate, you don't have any choose but to ask your recruiter for advice on how to proceed. It won't be the first time it's happened.

bellac11 · 28/09/2022 16:16

Is this a recruitment agency? They are normally pretty flexible, afterall its in their interest to get another person on their books and out earning money for their commission.

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:17

@MarshaMelrose I agree it sounds good, she really needs me and I know that's the problem however I need to do what's right for me as im a single parent. She did me a favour by giving me this opportunity when my ex husband walked out and I was going through a dreadful time so now she thinks I am indebted to her forever

@bellac11 no it's the actual new employer who have offered me this job based on 3rd party background check

Whilst you're waiting for your boss to fill in the form, why don't you send evidence of your employment to the agency or the employer. Given that most employees only provide details of length of service anyway, it would probably be enough to keep them happy for now. Either a contract or payslips or p60.

MarshaMelrose · 28/09/2022 16:26

I know you're worried that if they ring, she might badmouth you, but I think that's highly unlikely. Despite what you read, it's really rare that people lie over official things like that. It sounds like the new job is very important to you, so you need to be proactive. If she doesn't let you go now, you're only going to keep trying. Who wants to be held captive like that? Couldn't you get another colleague, maybe a friend, to write your reference on the qt, avoiding your boss completely?

whyareyoubeingweird · 28/09/2022 16:28

@Leftbutcameback thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I'm just so terrified of doing something wrong that makes it look like I'm hiding something ( I know it sounds silly)

I think I'll phone new employer and hope that they understand. I just worry that any hint of hassle or red flag will cause the plug to be pulled.

Is there anyone else that can do this verification?

grayhairdontcare · 28/09/2022 16:32

Phone and tell them that " as she is desperate for you not to leave her employment, that she has point blank refused to fill in the form, so they need to contact your other reference instead "

TheFlis12345 · 28/09/2022 16:35

I have never heard of a company having to provide verification on an employee who wants to leave, that sounds odd. Are you in the uk?
