Just that really, I would love to work from home but I'm struggling to find a position to be able to do this?, I've looked on the major sites, what would you suggest?

Clinical coder for the nhs. There are definitely trainee wfh post out there or at least some with very minimal trips to the office.
Good luck with your search.

What sort of thing have you done in the past, what sort of qualifications do you have?

Sickoffamilydrama · 11/09/2022 10:54

I moved to WFH having been office based, we sold our Head office after the pandemic. Be mindful that it can be very isolating and monotonous a few of us are going to find somewhere to go into a few days a week just to prevent us becoming depressed.

It does have it's positives to but worth thinking what type of person you are before going for a WFH role.

Frazzlefrazle · 11/09/2022 10:56

I work for a water company (data work) I came from a completely different role. Its out there you just have to keep applying.

Homebased for a national charity.

lots of home based jobs on charityjobs website.

Userxxxxx · 11/09/2022 13:10

Maybe look through some well-known household names for their work from home roles
www.jobtrain.co.uk/brakesgroup/displayjob.aspx?jobid=26102
Insurance companies do a lot of work from home roles where you can work your way up from the contact centre.

Myself I work on a helpdesk (bit like a call centre) doing shift work with colleagues from all across the country and have an expiry date (fixed term role) HR think home working is wonderful but the department manager doesn't think it is right.

Before this I worked for an e-commerce company who had switched off their phones and we were doing live chat and tickets again shift work involved - the job wasn't one that was going to be long-lasting, high churn of staff.

Prior to this, an outbound cold calling sales role for a national company where that's all you did all day, it got boring same old pretty quick, again shift work and not a job to last.

NHS admin

as above, it can be really monotonous and isolating. So you need to think carefully about why you want to work to from home.

I do it because of the flexibility it gives me around my kids / school run and my husband working demanding hours.

I’m bored to tears - but I fill my life with other things such as being a school governor

newjobwhodisperhaps · 12/09/2022 22:01

Education dept within Childrens Services - I'm now looking to get away from WFH!

Following. I desperately need a work from home job, I have a disabled teen and she’s now only in college 4 days a week with longer holidays, she can pretty much entertain herself but can’t be left completely alone. I don’t have much experience when it comes to using tech or the telephone so it’s tricky 😬.

Runnerduck34 · 12/09/2022 22:11

I wfh full time in a local authority job. I think lot of councils, government departments etc wfh

StarDolphins · 12/09/2022 22:15

I wfh in Education Services.

theres no fuel to pay fits in with school pick up but it’s SO isolating, I miss having a laugh with other people & as much as I love my dog, he’s not witty in the slightest!

Sickoffamilydrama · 12/09/2022 22:39

I'd advise get yourself up with technology @Lovemusic33 do as much of the free stuff as possible once you get the hang of it, it's often easy to transfer the knowledge over.

Don't be afraid of it, we have employed people whom didn't know much but were willing to learn that is the most important thing.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/09/2022 22:43

I'm in marketing - was office-based prepandemic, but office was closed & moved the permanent wfh.
DH is mostly wfh with a few days a month in the office, he's IT in the civil service.
Friends who are also wfh include Environment Agency, IT/software/programming, charity.

CampRedLeaf · 12/09/2022 22:46

I do get a bit uppity when I see threads like this and I can't put my finger on why. I've worked in my organisation for a long time (20 years) and I have worked my way up to the position I am in now. It's been a long hard slog of nights, shifts and weekends to get to point I am now (flexible mon-fri WFH). But people just see I WFH and think I have an easy number.

I suppose its like the people who want a job working 10am-2pm who don't see the grind others have put in to get to that point.

Perhaps do some courses on Linked In etc to learn the generic stuff like Microsoft programmes, but then most jobs would give you training as many companies will have bespoke IT systems.

Insurance companies have a huge variety of jobs working from home. Call centre or admin team at an entry level and then business support type things, but also professions like IT, legal, risk, HR, actuarial, governance roles etc.
