Interviewed for a job paying 10k over the going rate. Negotiated another 5k.

From what I was told on the interview the current team rarely take their annual leave entitlement and work late most nights, with senior members working till 10pm sometimes. Senior members also work most weekends and never take two days off at the weekend.

I was told there was no lunch break but can eat and drink at desk.

The role will stretch me professionally which would be good, giving me experience and a step up.

The office didn’t feel friendly and I was told there is not much chatting on the interview when I asked if I could meet the person I would be working with - which I thought was a strange remark.

Is the additional pay worth the conditions.

It says a lot about the working culture and management attitude. They sound like bustards.

That would more a concern than the extra hours per se.

If you're desperate for the career progression could you do it for a short time and move on? How easy would it be to pick something else up?

No no no and no. Be glad they told you they're an exploitative employer who expects workers to put them ahead of everything upfront, and walk away if offered. I think people like this should also be told that their working conditions are unacceptable.

Why would you take on a role like this?

Those practices are illegal too.

You are entitled to a lunch break and annual leave. Not taking these will affect your physical and mental health and it is also likely it will affect your job performance.

Of course everyone will be miserable in that office under these conditions...

Sounds like an appalling employer.
