Would you travel 30 miles for a 4 hr a day job?

I'm advertising it

It seems such a long way for a minimum wage job

Am I being daft? or is it just too far?

nope, think of all that time on a bus or petrol if they are driving

milge · 14/01/2008 22:42

not for minimum wage I wouldn't, no.

Scramble · 14/01/2008 22:43

Depends on the job, how specialised it is, the hourly rate, how many hours a week and the type of person it will attract. If the hours are during school time you may attract mums who are desperate for those kinds of hours.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:43

So do I call her for interview or not?

OP posts:
Scramble · 14/01/2008 22:43

Sorry you did say minimum wage I will go back to sleep now .

PillockOfTheCommunity · 14/01/2008 22:43

I travel from just outside Bury St Eds across to just outside Ipswich every day which is just over 30 miles, for a 3.5 hour work day, but I am straight down the A14 and I do earn twice the minimum wage.

I wouldn't be doing it if the route to work wasn't so easy (am I right in thinking you're not on a very main route?) and if I earnt less it simply wouldn't be worth doing.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:44

It is outside of school hours

No exp/no qual necessary

OP posts:

Whats the transport like to the job location?

Maidamess · 14/01/2008 22:44

I wouldn't do it. (Call her in for interview, or do the travelling). She's not going to move house to do a low paid job.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:44

Very rural - it could take her 30-45 minutes

OP posts:
Scramble · 14/01/2008 22:45

is there anyway you can change the hours or have a longer shift?

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:46

No transport at all - aa map says it will take 51 minutes

I should phone her & tell her shouldn't I?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:47

Nope - can't change the hours without sacking or seriously inconveniencing someone who has been with me 3 yrs - which I REALLY don't want to do

PillockOfTheCommunity · 14/01/2008 22:52

I don't think it's fair to not ask her for Interview because of it, you don't know if she's moving house anyway, or has another part-time job over your way, or stays at her boyfriends all week

there could be many reasons, why not be honest with her and ask?

dinny · 14/01/2008 22:54

no way, I travel 30 miles to work a full day twice a week and it's so tiring and wouldn't do it if not fairly lucrative!

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:54

She has just moved in to temp accommodation with her hubby (I think)

I think I will interview her because long term I could offer her 30 hrs (but maybe not for 6 months)

OP posts:
bookwormmum · 14/01/2008 22:56

It's up to her to decide if she wants to commute that far each day. I'd be wary about rejecting her just for the distance. If she seems suitable interview her but do discuss the travelling issue.

Scramble · 14/01/2008 22:57

If you have been up front about the hours then interview her.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 23:04

I have pointed out the distance & offered her a telephone interview - that way at least we can get a feel for each other before she uses the petrol

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 15/01/2008 09:37

Definitely interview her if you otherwise would, use the opportunity to discuss the commute and make sure she has thought it through and is aware.

LIZS · 15/01/2008 17:08

Nope , but not your decision to make if she's knowingly applied.

Blu · 15/01/2008 17:14

Don't think it is for you to decide - she must know whether she can travel or not. Maybe she is used to zooming around on a motorbike or scooter, or something, which would be much cheaper petrol-wise.

Hulababy · 15/01/2008 17:19

For minimum wage probably not, not unless I really loved the work.

I do however travel an 80 mile round trip a day for work. One day a week this is for a full day; two days a week for just over half a day. But I do get paid a fair bit more than minimum wage.

Judy1234 · 15/01/2008 17:24

I've flown abroad for a 4 hour work thing before now but obviously it depends how much you're being paid for those 4 hours if it's worth it.

Mercy · 15/01/2008 17:30

The applicant could be planning to move to your area if she gets the job.
