Hi - I’m fed up with working in admin .

I left a career in media to have kids , returned to work when my circs changed and now I am stuck in my stopgap admin job. It’s most so boring and also stressful’

I really want a change, any suggestions? I can’t return to original career due to geography .

Thanks!!

HLTA? How are you with other people's kids en masse?
Lorry driver? Massive shortage currently.
Do you fancy something practical or nore cerebral?
Full time or part time?
Any restrictions on working hours? Length of commute?

Scarby9 · 18/11/2021 23:09

Whoops. Missed the responses about no retraining. That's much more limiting.

HLTA - ooh that’s a good idea. Yeah I like kids Lordy driver - can’t cos am single parent , also am not an amazing driver haha Well part time would be ideal but I need to earn 20k minimum

I kind of think practical really tbh . Though I am highly qualified academically my brain isn’t what it used to be !

Short commute cos of being around for my youngest mainly (12)

Thanks xxx so helpful

Not all admin is boring. Perhaps working in a different field would be more interesting. You could look at council jobs, as it can be possible to get entry level without much specific training, and when they discover you are competent opportunities open up.
Or voluntary sector. Although less progression generally there, and lots of fixed term high stress project work.

What skills do you have / what would you like to do??

If you are ex media, try and get a gig in a press office, or a digital agency of some kind? HR/Train on the job? Solicitor/train on the job? Plumbing/electrician via apprenticeship, delivery driving - or do govt HGV boot camp..

Antonia2021 · 18/11/2021 23:14

I recently went for an apprenticeship that would have been great as can earn while retrain but missed out (

My eldest said to me - you would have so much more fun and less stress just working at Costa (than my current job, it’s so stressful and isolating because it’s wfh still )

If you were in favour of nursing how about Probation service officer, start is around 22-23k, if you like it and want to train to be a full probation officer, you can apply to do it on the job and they pay for the degree. Not for the faint hearted but neither is nursing. There's also a national shortage.

Antonia2021 · 18/11/2021 23:19

Oh just to add to the limitations , I live somewhere without a huge amount of jobs and v low wages !! Rural tourism area

Surely admin is very different from one place to the next
This year i have done 3 admin temp jobs all of them are vastly different to each other

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/11/2021 00:01

Blimey - editors are GOLD DUST (I am a producer). COVID has changed everything - remote working now super common. Would you like to go back?

Hey - I really want to go out to work as I live alone with the kids so find it isolating working from home all the time - I am really missing adult social contact !

Can you just look at the available jobs on your area and see if any of them appeal to you

Yogaandcocoa · 19/11/2021 07:31

And what the entry requirements are

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/11/2021 07:34

Check out your local housing associations for their jobs pages. The range of jobs is vast - from rent collection to on site supported living staff, all around that sort of income level.

cruffin · 19/11/2021 07:37

Do you live near any universities? They have loads of jobs in student services etc.
