Finally I'm a manager but how can I be a really good one?

So I've finally landed a management job, I'm in a professional services role and after many years working as a consultant/advisor I'm now managing a team of people doing my old job.

I've had some really bad bosses in the past who either micro managed me which I absolutely hated, or lorded it over me to show their 'boss-ness' or just generally treated me like shit. I resolved never to be that kind of boss. I'm fairly confident in my team that they want to work and can do the job, but i want to be a supportive boss and coach them to improve where they need to develop etc. What are the dos and don'ts of being a great boss? I'd be interested to hear both from those who are bosses and those who have experience of shit/brilliant bosses.

Congratulations!
See it as a role of service, not of authority. You aren’t there to tell people what to do; you are there to help them to do their jobs more easily. Find out what you can (realistically) do to help people.

Don’t ever moan about your workload or pressure to someone who is lower paid than you.

If your role involves being an intermediary between different levels, communicate your team’s concerns to higher management in a clear, timely way.

Acknowledge emails escalated to you by your direct reports and deal with them in a timely manner, don’t just ignore them.
Turn up (and turn up on time) to catch ups that you have set up.
Do whatever you can to facilitate your staff’s development needs/wants.
Be open to feedback on your own performance, don’t just pay it lip service.

Don’t shy away from dealing with piss takers and hope the rest of the team ‘picks up after them’. That’s my most loathed trait in a manager.

You aren’t there to tell people what to do

She is. But there’s a polite, efficient, harmonious way of doing it, most of the time.

Don't have favourites as they will take advantage. Remember there are two sides to the story. People will suck up to you to try and manipulate you to get what they want and take control. Remember you are the boss . You are in charge .

If someone is taking this piss, address is with them. Dont take it out on the whole team and make them suffer because you couldn't address it with the person causing it.

Talk with your staff not at or down to them.
take in their opinions as they do the job they may have better ways of doing it.
