Does anyone else always feel shit after an interview?

I even get this when I get offered the job in a phone call call afterwards (feeling is pre phone call when I'm still waiting to hear).

I usually feel great before hand, really positive then immediately after I feel like I've blown it and I'm rubbish and probably not up to the job, it's probably me just suffering imposter syndrome 😂. Does anyone else feel like this?

Absolutely hate it. Sad

Mmm it depends how well o think it went.

I either feel pretty good knowing I did my best OR I know I fucked it..

But thinking about it even if I think I did a good interview the inevitable going over my answers or cringing at something I did or said plays on my mind.

How do you think it really went? What was your immediate feelings after it?

isitjustmeeee · 20/10/2021 15:02

Gut feeling was I blew it

I am always cringing, no matter how well I've done, because in an interview you are essentially selling yourself, and I hate it.

Luckytattie · 20/10/2021 15:06

Just keep fingers crossed and if you don't get it, at least you got the experience of another interview under your belt. If you don't get it then definitely ask for feedback.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 20/10/2021 15:07

Yep, always have a big high afterwards knowing I didn't completely choke or say anything too outrageously stupid, then the self reproach comes in thinking of what I should have done better and I feel useless. I think the key is to try and put an interview behind you the minute it's done, and distract yourself from any 'could/should haves'.

isitjustmeeee · 20/10/2021 15:08

I just couldn't find the words today. Really fumbling bumbling etc. Not sure I directly answered any questions properly. I did prep but not enough. Argh!

OP posts:
Luckytattie · 20/10/2021 15:11

Aw that's a shame about the fumbling and I know exactly what you mean. I have done it too.

But it's not over yet!

number87inthequeue · 20/10/2021 15:12

Yep. For me I think it's because I find it really hard to gauge the interviewer's reactions. Plus immediately after the interview there's a bit of an adrenaline 'come down'.

The only time I haven't felt like this was my current job, where I thought I was going for an interview but it turned out they had already decided they wanted me so were actually trying to sell themselves to me! I was offered the position before I left the room so no chance to feel I'd blown it.

isitjustmeeee · 20/10/2021 15:19

Yeah see I would have expected an offering in the room immediately I'd it had a fine well. The majority of my jobs are were awarded this way. This is why I'm doubtful. The circumstances around the job are interesting. I can't divulging too much as it'd definitely be outing but I can't work out if I thru were bluffing me about number of applicants and interviews. It was an internal position. Things said and alluded to in the interview suggested I was the first only applicant but they did say there were others.

Gold star if you can ignore the typo's and understand the above jibberish thanks to my phone Grin

Cantgetausername87 · 20/10/2021 15:25

I've felt like that about every succesful interview I've ever had! I think its natural to go away and replay your answers and after reflection I always wish I'd answered differently! Just try and relax as you wait for the outcome- good luck x

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 20/10/2021 15:27

See i feel really positive about the one I had today, but feel really awful in myself now. Adrenaline come down i assume.
Fingers crossed you did better than you think - good luck

isitjustmeeee · 20/10/2021 15:29

expected an offering in the room immediately

An offering of God knows what hahaha! That's one of of my best typo's yet! I now have a vision of some poor old goat waiting for the inevitable and the interviewers all dressed in robes chanting 😂 oh dear!

OP posts:
isitjustmeeee · 20/10/2021 15:30

Thanks for everyone. Fingers crossed it's adrenaline come down Xx

The last few interviews I've had this year, I always get down to the last 4, then they do the whole "it's not you, it's me" spiel. This is usually at final panel, so it's after 3 or 4 stages, and after all that preparation it's hard not to feel a bit rubbish afterwards.

I had a final panel this week which I'm still waiting for the outcome of; they said I'd hear by early next week at the latest. It's the adrenalin of having gone through the interview, combined with the anxiety of not knowing what is happening plus the decision being taken out of your hands that's the killer.

Try not to think about it too much OP, and hopefully things will go your way. Good luck!

isitjustmeeee · 21/10/2021 07:42

Didn't get it 😂 In the end they gave it to a bloke who has family connections with a twinned organisation who can just carbon copy everything they do, even though I am more qualified and experienced. Said bloke can't also have babies and go on maternity leave in the future I guess, so it is what it is!

OP posts:
isitjustmeeee · 21/10/2021 07:44

Sucks to be a woman and sucks to not have useful family connections!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 21/10/2021 07:47

I was recently chatting to a bloke I thought I was networking! Basically with the attitude well I'm not prepared to to x,y,z but I'm bloody good and such and such if I do say so myself. He called me later that day and offered me a job which I accepted!
Earlier in the year I'd gone through a totally soul destroying 3 stage interview to be rejected when I really thought it was in the bag .
You never can tell , and I think being relaxed and not desperate is the key

isitjustmeeee · 21/10/2021 07:51

No it was definitely who you know bit what you know and a no uterus thing!

OP posts:
isitjustmeeee · 21/10/2021 07:52

Bit = not

Sorry to hear that OP, I feel your pain.

Have a few days off job searching, eat and drink your favourite things, and do your favourite activities then maybe get back on it next week.

Wishing you all the best.

isitjustmeeee · 21/10/2021 16:16

@Starseeking thank you. Thankfully it was an internal position so I'll just plod along at the moment until I feel I need to jump ship if there are no further opportunities within a reasonable time frame.

MuthaHubbard · 21/10/2021 18:29

I'm the same - had a screening interview today and totally blew it, mind went blank and made a lot of umming noises - as kindly pointed out by dh who I bloody knew was listening. Am of course totally blaming him for putting me off Smile

Starseeking · 25/10/2021 22:18

I found out today I didn't get the job either. It's the 3rd set of big interviews I’ve done this year. I ALWAYS get down to the last 4 candidates and the panel interview.

It feels really crap receiving rejection after rejection. Each process lasts about 2 months, meaning so much preparation and work goes into it, it’s soul destroying when they get to the end and say no. I’m so very tired of it.

jennymac31 · 26/10/2021 00:07

The whole job application process is so tiring and it does feel crap when you always seem to make it to the last 2-3 candidates but the job went to someone with more experience or was a better 'fit' for the role.

I suffer from imposter syndrome big-time and I always dissect my interview as soon as I've ended the call, and then beat myself up for not providing the best examples. I got so used to always receiving rejection calls that I nearly fell off my chair when I was successful in my last application over the summer. That said, the job is a 12 month Secondment so it's already in the back of my mind that I'll have to jump back onto the application train in 9 months time or so.
