Hi all,

Im just wondering what’s your thoughts on someone who decides to do a low skilled job all there life and would you look down on them?

As I’ve come across people who don’t treat the said people with respect.

Thanks

I do what’s considered a low skilled job.

I’m not sure there are any low skilled jobs. Everything requires skill. Just different skills.

Biancadelrioisback · 29/09/2021 19:38

People do what is best for them and their family. For some, working low paid jobs gives them flexibility that they wouldn't have in a higher paid job. For others, it's enough for them. They don't want to retrain or take on more responsibility. And that is completely fine.

Kangaroosfeet · 29/09/2021 19:38

No its surely better than taking the piss on benefits when you don't need to be?

MadMadMadamMim · 29/09/2021 19:41

Nope. I know plenty of people like this and I've never looked down on any of them. People do what suits them in life. Sometimes they've not had the opportunity to 'skill up', sometimes they have skills, but doing something low paid is either all they can find, or it fits with their lifestyle.

I am highly qualified and now have a professional, fairly well paid career.

I've also worked cleaning toilets and hotel rooms in the past because it paid and it suited me when the kids were small.

That is true tbh!

No. I have moved into a job that I think is considered low skilled, it is low paid, but am much happier. It is much more rewarding than my desk job was.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 29/09/2021 19:45

I don't judge people for their job but for their attitude to that job. I would have nothing but respect for someone doing a low skilled job and taking pride in doing it really well, whereas someone in a professional role who's taking the mick and not doing their best, well, I'll keep thoughts to myself but respect wouldn't play a part.

iklboo · 29/09/2021 19:48

Gods no. That would be a dickish attitude.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 29/09/2021 19:50

Your job does not define you, does it. I might be quite envious, if the low skill job was also low stress

MintJulia · 29/09/2021 19:50

No, not if they were happy, and they provided for their children.

kieronsmum · 29/09/2021 19:52

most low paid so-called unskilled workers were the reason this country was able to run through covid, no I don't look down on them

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 29/09/2021 19:53

Are you talking about yourself? In life you'll meet all kinds of people with different attitudes. That's to be expected isn't it?

Most people aren't rude to others based on their job but of course they will be rude people everywhere. I can't imagine any poster is going to come one and admit to being one.

grasstreeleaf · 29/09/2021 19:53

No. As a society, we need people to work in all different roles. Every job role is important and will make a difference at some level.

thinkbiglittleone · 29/09/2021 19:53

Absolutely not, eventually single job is important in some way, and a job title certainly does not determine a person. However someone who chooses to look down their nose at another based on a job, definitely deserve to be negatively judged

ParkheadParadise · 29/09/2021 19:54

Agree 👍👍
Iloveabourbon2 · 29/09/2021 19:54

I don't think many people will admit it OP. However many people look down their noses IRL and surprisingly nursing is very snobby and you wouldn't think as it's far from a glam job but there's so much hierarchy

makkapakka212 · 29/09/2021 19:59

Hmm no but there's i guess there's someone i know who's from a working class background, went to university and studied very hard and did well but works in a low paid job they had from about 17, I don't look down on them but i think they're wasting their talent, maybe it's a confidence issue or better the devil you know? They could do a much more rewarding job and earn more money but I don't think they want to take the risk

I would NOT look down on someone who worked in a low skilled job all their life - every job has value, and I can’t think of a single role, job or product that doesn’t have low skilled workers somewhere in the chain - and if someone wasn’t doing that job, the chain would break.
makkapakka212 · 29/09/2021 20:01

And having worked in low skilled jobs for a long time , no I definitely don't look down on them, manners cost nothing too

Nightbringer · 29/09/2021 20:03

No. My dp works in a warehouse. I earn a lot more money, in a skilled 'professional' job.

Dp works physically hard. He can be more flexible to provide me support with my kids so I can do a job I love.

We could easily afford for him not to work, but he feels he needs to to contribute and to keep him going.

His worth to our family is worth far more than how 'skilled' his job is or what pay he brings home.

I don't judge anyone in any job, because their job isn't their whole worth. I say that as someone who has always had their career near the top of their priority list.

Thatsplentyjack · 29/09/2021 20:03

You mean low paid. I don't believe there are any low skilled jobs, and no. Just because someone doesn't earn a lot of money doesn't mean they aren't as worthy of respect as a high earner. People don't deserve respect just because they have more assets or disposable income.

Mumoblue · 29/09/2021 20:04

No, I’m not a dickhead. And I’ve mostly worked in shops, restaurants or looking after kids my whole life.

I think everyone should have to do “low skilled” customer-facing jobs at some point, then maybe some customers wouldn’t act the way they do.

Lockdownbear · 29/09/2021 20:05

That's exactly my thoughts I have far more respect for people who work (all jobs are important) than people happy to live of benefits.
CuteOrangeElephant · 29/09/2021 20:07

@Nightbringer same here, DH works in a warehouse. He actually loves it. He moved to my home country where he doesn't speak th the language well.

thistimelastweek · 29/09/2021 20:11

People are people.

We all deserve respect.
