Job for SAHM

Hi all!

I'm currently a stay at home mum and I'm looking to go back to work when my toddler is around 2-3 years old.

I'm fully qualified in both interior design and personal training and I'd like to work from home.

Can I have your input as to which job you think would appeal to more clientele?

My other option was to go into beauty...I'd have to train up but living in London, there are so many great training schools around!

Thankyou!

When you say fully qualified - what qualifications?

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 10:43

@Marni83 why is that relevant to the question?

OP posts:
trumpisagit · 13/09/2021 10:45

It's relevant as "fully qualified" is meaningless.
If you want advice you have to explain better.

Marni83 has asked a really relevant question. If I was considering paying someone for a service which they said they were fully qualified in, i would want to know this detail too.

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 10:47

I have a degree in interior design and a level 3 qualification in personal training and exercise referral.

But that isn't what I'm asking. I'm asking which service out of the three would appeal to the public the most

Not a promising start op

You will be asked this be possible clients

8dpwoah · 13/09/2021 10:48

I'm afraid I'm a scruffy slob so don't have any experience in either of those areas but am looking at being self-employed in other areas eventually. What I'm spending my time doing at the moment is really looking into the local market as to which of the things I can do is most in demand- on local Facebook groups for example there are certain services and trades which people are constantly calling for and only getting a few names back so they must be absolutely jam packed with bookings. Whereas other things hardly get asked for or other services are commonly mentioned but get lots of different options in response so therefore there's plenty of businesses already catering for those.

I think that would be my starting point if it were me, your London market is likely to be very different to me up in the Midlands but the market research itself is likely going to be similar.

Marni83 · 13/09/2021 10:48

And to respond with “how is that relevant”

Is I’ll advised

Marni83 · 13/09/2021 10:49

But neither would appeal unless I rated the qualification

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 10:50

@8dpwoah great idea! I think the thing with London is every market is fairly saturated.

OP posts:
llllllaura · 13/09/2021 10:51

@Marni83 I'm sorry but I think you've misunderstood the question.

I don't need to explain my qualifications, I am simply asking a poll of which service is the most appealing out of the three listed.

OP posts:
8dpwoah · 13/09/2021 10:57

Is it a case of which is most lucrative too? I mean you would presumaby get less customers for interior design but would each one earn more in the time it took you to do the work than it would with say more PT clients at a lower rate?

My gut is saying there might be lots of people who've set up as PT while the gyms were shut and people are either being loyal or going back to the gym, whereas interior design is a bit more specialist and it's also your highest qual so I'd perhaps be looking to see how viable that is first.

I don't think I'd bother starting again with beauty as it seems that it would be saturated especially with cheap recently qualified people.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/09/2021 10:57

I think if you put the work in advertising and hours etc, you would likely get customers for any of those routes. I suppose I'd just recommend the one you enjoy the most, and can see fitting around your life the most.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/09/2021 10:59

Asking a group of Mumsnetters which service they would prefer of the three isnt going to give you enough info to know comfortably which one will be most likely to succeed.

I've never used an interior designer, a PT or a beautician in my life, so wouldnt use any of these. However I know there are people out there that do, or would, use any of them.

Have you researched what provision is available for these in your area? You may spot a gap.

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 11:00

@8dpwoah you're so right. With lockdown I have seen a lot of PT's popping up in the area, so perhaps I should chose interior design...Thankyou!

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I guess it's all about self belief isn't it! ☺️

I'm in N London. Any request on FB for a PT gets tens of them looking for work within a few minutes.

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 11:05

@pianolessons1 I'm in N London too so that's good to know, Thankyou!

ThedaBara · 13/09/2021 11:27

Do you have or can you build up a portfolio of recent, not student, finished interior design work? That, I would imagine, would be the biggest obstacle to getting hired in that field, compared to the other two which can be done without a portfolio. Which would you actually enjoy doing? Being self employed is hard and you do need to feel passionate and driven about your choice

pianolessons1 · 13/09/2021 11:45

good luck!

FrownedUpon · 13/09/2021 11:50

Not sure how you can PT from home. Do you have lots of space?

ReeseWitherfork · 13/09/2021 11:52

Are you aiming to be self employed, working for yourself? As opposed to finding steady employment with a company?

llllllaura · 13/09/2021 11:58

@ReeseWitherfork I am yes ☺️

OP posts:
DogFoodPie · 13/09/2021 11:58

Interior design seems like something you could do around kids better, whereas PT would be more when the client wanted it.

pianolessons1 · 13/09/2021 21:41

Lots of PTs round here make mini gyms if they have a garage and teach from home.
