Terminated after I resigned is this allowed?

I was told that my employment contract was terminated, but I resigned before this happened. Is this allowed?

Did they agree to pay you your notice?

diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 22:44

I am also being told to meet the boss in the foyer to return the work items. I presume I'm not allowed in the building. Is this usual for someone who resigned?

You can be fired in your notice period.

How long have you worked there?

And did they give you a reason for firing you?

Sunnygold · 19/08/2021 22:46

It’s not usual but can happen if they’re angry about you quitting. They still have to pay your notice whether they require you to work during that period or not.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/08/2021 22:47

If you're going to a competitor it's not unusual for you to be asked to leave straight away.

diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 22:48

Yes it says they are paying me my notice after the liar boss said that I told him in a phone call that I would not work my notice.

I then received an email saying I would owe them money to which I replied that I has been misrepresented and they had been misled about what I said in the phone call.

This is why I wanted to leave. Very shady toxic workplace.

GeeIneverthoughtofthat · 19/08/2021 22:50

For what reason would you owe them money?

Theunamedcat · 19/08/2021 22:52

Holiday pay?

diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 22:53

Because the line manager lied and said that I had said I won't work my notice. This is why I do not like phone calls and prefer email. The manager did not want me coming back as he is worried about what I will say when I am quizzed on the reason for leaving.

Meanwhile I am treated like this. I've been there for 8 weeks.

I feel like this is more to this story. What led up to this OP?

diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 23:14

What led up to it is I handed in my resignation and they were unhappy about it.

OP posts:
diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 23:20

I was very unhappy there from the first week as from day one they were badmouthing each other. There were people crying about working all hours and not being able to keep up with the work load.

Very toxic people talking about keeping things in their back pocket to use against other members of staff when the time is right.

Ugh not my kind of environment. I started feeling ill. I think the line manager was worried I would tell the main boss of the slagging off he'd done, so he made up that I wouldn't work my notice.

MNmonster · 19/08/2021 23:23

It can and does happen. Usually when there are disciplinary proceedings ongoing.

Lougle · 19/08/2021 23:24

8 weeks? Yes, they can terminate as long as they pay you anything due in your contract.

My DF worked in quality control. Whenever a company he worked for went under (80's recession) he was always the first to be escorted from the building because he could sink any remaining work. He was usually given 30 minutes to clear his desk. It was never personal.

diddlydeedee · 19/08/2021 23:31

I haven't been disciplined for anything.

I wanted to leave, as it is a toxic place to work.

OP posts:
daisychain01 · 20/08/2021 06:33

They just need to pay 1 week's statutory notice period as you've worked there for such a short time. Do you have any suspicion they won't pay?

BrozTito · 20/08/2021 06:41

Christ you did right to get out. That sort of work environment can destroy you. Btw if they sack you instead of quitting its far easier to claim UC

Muma1992 · 20/08/2021 07:10

Did you not giving your notice in writing? If you haven't, that's rude of you.

Bluntness100 · 20/08/2021 07:12

It’s weird but they can do it, you’ve only been there eight weeks. Just hand your stuff in and move on.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 20/08/2021 07:50

Always follow up in writing and copy in hr so you have evidence.

diddlydeedee · 20/08/2021 08:06

Yes, I resigned in writing in a very polite manner.

Unsure who the HR person is, as when someone leaves they do not hire a new person they just dump the work on someone else. So I sent it to the manager.

Yes I agree workplaces like this can destroy you. My instincts were right though, as the way they have behaved regarding my resignation is downright immoral.

Yes Daisy, they are paying me the full week now after I sent the email and I put what you said to put about being fully willing to work my notice and expecting to be paid for it. They then sent an email saying that they had terminated my contract as of yesterday but the would pay me for the week and to hand in my equipment to the person that lied about me. Which is a bit worrying.

OP posts:
FedUpAtHomeTroels · 20/08/2021 08:32

Take someone with you for proof you turned in your equipment if you are turning it into the lying manager.

diddlydeedee · 20/08/2021 09:54

Thank you I have stated in my email that I wish for my colleague to witness the handover and to see the equipment is fully functional.

I hope that covers me

OP posts:
diddlydeedee · 20/08/2021 16:52

I handed all the equipment over with a witness there. I told them I wanted to demonstrate it was fully functioning. I got photocopies of the signed handover.

I received a voicemail mumbling something about an exit interview. I can't be bothered with all that. What is the point?

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 20/08/2021 19:15

Depends who the exit interview is with? If its someone unconnected to toxic manager then I would say yes and go prepared with many reasons why you find the workplace a highly toxic environment and what happened about you leaving

Then don't put this place on your CV pretend you had a mental health break and be done
