If you work part time, what do you earn?

I've been working full time since back from maternity leave. Previously compressed hours over 4 days but now in a new job and doing 5 days. Its killing me. My dd is so little, I wont have any more children and I feel so guilty sending her to nursery full time and I miss having time with her.

But money. I'm on 25k at the moment, in a new career. In an ideal world I'd work 3 days a week.

How do you manage if you work part time and what do you earn? My partner earns a good amount but we are not married and I dont want to rely too heavily on him.

The problem isn't your low salary, it's that family money isn't shared.

I work full time and DH part time. My £25k and his £7k goes into one pot and we run the house from there.

Your assumption is not correct. We have a shared account and all shared costs go in there. Then we both have individual costs that come from own individual accounts (e.g. phone, subscriptions etc).

We will most likely get married in the near future but even when we are I'm not comfortable on relying on someone else. I was between jobs a few years ago and he covered all costs and I absolutely hated it so I like having my own money.

Just thinking out loud I would like to try for a promotion/higher paid job in a few months if I get some exams done so that my earnings are not a massive amount less but in not sure how feasible that is.

I work 2 days a week at the moment. This was not by choice but rather because the project I was working on finished and that was all I could get ( my field was badly hit by covid). I work 15 hours a week and earn 12000. My full time salary is 31000. We financially struggled over the past couple of months as DPs salary is not very high but we scraped by staying out of our house deposit savings. However it meant no trips with DS and DSS, no hobbies, clubs, toddler classes for either boys. It has been very stressful but I go back into full time employment and having that weight lifted and a full pay check again is something I am very much looking forward to and it's not something i would do willingly again.

I guess it depends on your circumstances. If DP is not tight and family money is shared it's not a big deal however what impact would this have on your career? What happens if you split up? Is the house in joint names and will you get enough equity to buy your own home?

I was initially working as a HNW PA on 30k for 20 hours but the commute was a pain and I stopped enjoying it. I’m now on £15k working in local government for 20 hours but it’s completely flexible and they let my daughter come to work with me. Despite the pay cut my quality of life is much better!

I work 30hrs over 4 days, so I get one weekday plus weekends with toddler DD. I earn roughly £40k (full time is £50k).
DH earns much less and he’s full time. I also have property income too (about £6k per annum net).

It made no financial sense for me to reduce hours but I was desperate to. I hope to do 30hrs over 5 days when she’s in primary school and then full time once she’s secondary.

WoahThereNelly · 22/07/2021 20:40

Neondisco · 22/07/2021 21:14

I work a mix of freelance and PAYE. As I pay my tax for freelance work after I've earned it, it's variable but approx 2k a month for 3 days (ish) work a week.

Boohooyouho · 22/07/2021 21:15

3 days (21hrs 20 minutes to be exact) just under 35k. Job share on public transport.

Neondisco · 22/07/2021 21:16

After tax that is.

Fluffyowl00 · 22/07/2021 21:19

Have you worked out what you would take home? A calculator like the salary calculator.com can tell you your take home pay after outgoings. Play around with 2/3/4 day salary. I found it really helpful to realise I wasn’t that much worse off (due to less tax/NI/childcare/petrol etc.

jevoudrais · 22/07/2021 21:20

£37k and four days

jevoudrais · 22/07/2021 21:20

Project manager

confusedlots · 22/07/2021 21:21

I work 3 days and find it a really good balance. I earn about £24k and I also do a bit of freelance work that brings in around £200 or so a month. DH earns a decent salary so thankfully things are ok for us financially at the minute. As the kids get older and have school drop offs and pick ups and school holidays to juggle, it definitely takes the pressure off when I'm around those 2 days a week.

caughtinanet · 22/07/2021 21:28

You question does really make sense, part time workers will on the whole get the pro-rated amount for a full time workers salary for that job

So a part time surgeon might get paid £60k a year but unless you're a surgeon that doesn't help you

The part time aspect isn't the relevant factor it's what the full time salary for the job is
