If you work part time, what do you earn?

I've been working full time since back from maternity leave. Previously compressed hours over 4 days but now in a new job and doing 5 days. Its killing me. My dd is so little, I wont have any more children and I feel so guilty sending her to nursery full time and I miss having time with her.

But money. I'm on 25k at the moment, in a new career. In an ideal world I'd work 3 days a week.

How do you manage if you work part time and what do you earn? My partner earns a good amount but we are not married and I dont want to rely too heavily on him.

Wow, thank you for everyones response! Really encouraging numbers.

@Aimee1987 so sorry to hear that, it sounds like you've had a really tough year! And good that you're getting back to full time. We are very lucky that we both kept our jobs, I was previously in the nhs in a part that was essential to the pa demic so my job was very secure. My partner is very good at his job, if he doesnt perform well he would easily get sacked. Fortunately he is approached by recruiters regularly and also has access to shares that he can take out shortly which helps.
I would not be as secure. I dont own our house and it would be a massive change in life style if we split up. I do have a decent amount in a fund account I could use for a small deposit. My partner is also divorced and pays a large amount to his ex and always makes sure the kids have more than enough so no worries there.
In terms of how it would impact my career I suspect it would not be great at my current place. They have no flexible working policy, women have returned back to work after short mat leaves and I dont know of anyone who works part time... But it's in accounting/finance which I could do most places, thinking of going back to the NHS for the flexibility and amazing pension.

30 hrs, £39k

When you say your current employer has no flexible work policy, do you mean you think they would turn down a flexible work request?

Backhometothenorth · 22/07/2021 22:37

19 hours 35k plus expenses. Engineer.

Nuggetnugget · 22/07/2021 22:40

About 500 a week. I work 12-16 hours a week.

Schoolchoicesucks · 22/07/2021 22:48

30 hours over 4 days. £45k. Accountant.

Did many years of 3 days for £21k.

PollyRoe16 · 22/07/2021 22:58

I work 3 days for just over £15k which is pro rata of a full time 25k salary.

OH earns around 35k full time. I find 3 days a good balance of getting to spend time with my lo and he loves nursery when I'm at work.

R.e relying on your partner surely you being part time would save you money on child care anyway so the costs may balance out anyway?

Lou2284 · 22/07/2021 23:02

I work 3 days a week 22.5 hrs I take home 1500 a month. DH earns 2000 a month full time it's not much but we get by.

Thanks again for more responses.

I'm on my lunch break in the office and I feel so guilty that I'm not with my baby. Nursery has been great and sent update photos but I just want to be with her. I think that's settled my decision. I'll start applying for part time jobs while getting some more exams done.

@BraxtonChic no, they're not flexible. When I interviewed i asked what they're flexible working policy was and that i was currently working compressed hours. They basically said flexible workings not an option, hours are 9-5 mon-Friday and referred me to the government site for flexible working requests

That doesn't mean you can't submit a flexible work request though. If you are planning to look for a PT job anyway, I would also put a request in - maybe wait until you've got an interview or two lined up elsewhere.

If they reject it, you have your answer, but they do have to justify why not rather than just say "It's not an option"!

BraxtonChic · 23/07/2021 14:30

Sorry meant to say it depends on length of service, can't remember if you said how long you've been with current employer?

Perhaps you don't want to wait that long Smile

AperolWhore · 23/07/2021 14:35

55k, plus circa 20k commission. I work4 days a week and have every Monday with my daughter.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 23/07/2021 14:52

Its really hard - but as you are not married so it would put you in a very financially vulnerable position to go part time. Career progression halts in part time roles mostly, and you dont get the pension contributions and you have nothing left over to save either. It really can only be done in a marriage where you both agree to prioritise your child and the financial burden and risk is shared between both parents. Otherwise you are jeopardising your future, and he is not.

ScabbyHorse · 23/07/2021 14:59

5 days school hours as a TA. £12,000.

Angrymum22 · 23/07/2021 15:21

Chose a career that has been flexible and I’ve never really worked full time. Currently working 19hrs ish for 30k+

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 23/07/2021 15:25

13k in a school admin role.
18.5 hours a week over 3 days, 39 weeks a year (term time only)

Pea1985 · 27/07/2021 10:34

Currently work 18.75 hours with salary 19k (38k fte).

Starting a new job in September, will be working 25 hours with salary 22.5k (34k fte). So technically I'm taking a pay cut based on fte but will come out with more as my hours are increasing.

I work in HR.

LBOCS2 · 27/07/2021 10:45

I did 3 days a week, term time only (39 weeks) for £24k for quite a while when my DC were small. I then changed roles and now I'm doing 4 days a week at £44k.

FWIW, DH and I share funds so we both have the same amount of play money, rather than putting in a proportionate amount to joint expenses. We find it fairer that way as his career hasn't been compromised by making decisions for the good of the family, plus as I spend more time with the DC I inevitably end up spending more on activities/feeding them/magazines and crap while we're out, etc.

MumofBoys79 · 27/07/2021 19:35

15500 per year for 3 days per wk in a band 4 NHS role - in Central London.

Now feel a bit hard done by seeing other people's salaries!

MumofBoys79 · 27/07/2021 19:40

The above was said tongue in cheek, I know there are many more people much worse off than me x
