Sacked for having wrong name

May I just state that our household is not interested in football & haven't watched the competition but we did see the European Cup Final on Sunday. DS was cheering on England.

My DS is Italian & I am English & our DC have Italian names.

My 17 year old DS has been working in a local company as a summer job before university. He has been told he is doing a great job.

Yesterday he arrived at work and started working. After a while his manager called him over & asked if his name was Italian. Moments later the manager told him that he wasn't needed anymore & he should 'just get out'. DS asked what was the reason was & told he was not good enough & too slow to learn.

DS left & called me totally confused. On his way home the senior manager called him & apologised & told to go back in today. He's gone in today.

AIBU to think this manager should not be in post?

Jesus Christ! Football has driven people mad!
I’m so sorry for your DS.
Is there an HR department?
I’d be all over that like a rash (complaining)

Fiddliestofsticks · 13/07/2021 09:54

Was it the same manager who called him back in? Or a different higher up one?

He could raise a grievance against the manager who tried to sack him as it was discrimination. He fired him due to his heritage! I would absolutely go through their formal grievance procedure.

Absolutely agree. WTF were they thinking.
Onlinedilema · 13/07/2021 10:05

Omg.
That was outrageous.

TeeBee · 13/07/2021 10:14

Straight to HR. That manager should not be in his post.

FlyingBattie · 13/07/2021 10:15

I wouldn't have gone back (not the point!)

I'm sorry, OP. That is disgusting. Definitely complain if you can

YouDoIDo · 13/07/2021 10:18

I would definitely contact HR. I’m guessing the senior manager called him back to cover his arse because that is some seriously racist dismissal.

ClawedButler · 13/07/2021 10:18

As the senior manager called and apologised, s/he is aware of the situation and is not pleased with the lower manager. I imagine the lower manager is already in hot water - if not instant dismissal than certainly some kind of disciplinary.

CHISistoast · 13/07/2021 10:19

Absolutely shocking!!

CheeseCrackersAndChutney · 13/07/2021 10:27

That’s horrendous. My first name is Italian just because my mum liked the name! I hadn’t even thought of the football thing. That is disgusting

FloodgatesofHell · 13/07/2021 10:35

Disgusting of the manager. I’m from an Italian immigrant family and feel that this sort of xenophobic behaviour is totally out of order.
Lodge a formal complaint, they should not be able to get away with it

shrill · 13/07/2021 10:37

Outrageous! Presumably it is a small company otherwise HR immediately if nothing else it needs to be on the manager's records for any future instances.

squirrelspatchcock · 13/07/2021 10:44

Oh dear, that is appalling behaviour from that manager. What were they thinking!? I really hope that it is addressed appropriately on his return

Outrageous racism. Manager needs sacking. And possibly sued if I were so inclined. Fucking disgusting behaviour towards a child by an adult. What is this world coming to??

FeatheredHope · 13/07/2021 10:47

Definitely lodge a formal complaint. This is absolutely shocking and unacceptable.

MeowPurr · 13/07/2021 11:00

Nope.

Are you certain you have all the details OP?

PRabbit · 13/07/2021 11:08

I would pursue this with a solicitor. Your son could be entitled to compensation and the company won’t dare behave like this again.

Orf1abc · 13/07/2021 11:17

Given that he is still working there, then any compensation would be negligible.

Unacceptable behaviour by the manager, but on the information given, it was resolved promptly by the senior manager. I would hope (expect) that they will still pay him for yesterday.

Compensation for injury to feelings is minimum £1k, plus aggravated damages. I would pull DS out of work now and say he tried but he felt too uncomfortable to continue working with the manager who racially discriminated against him. Then get a solicitor and claim.

Hi there,
Just to say thanks for the reports querying this thread, but we have no reason to believe that this poster is being anything other than truthful.
