Submitted cv - got asked to 90 minute interview ??????

IChangedMyNameForThisQ · 15/03/2021 11:37

Blokey type here. IT professional with Developer, Developer Manager, and Strategy Consultant on cv until redundancy in 2017.

54 years old. Didn't get back to work immediate as DW had a life changing operation, and DM developed dementia before passing away.

Now ready to re enter the fray and have been honing and brushing my cv, looking for similar IT management or consultant roles.

Out of the blue, just now, had a call from a company that I sent my cv to. They want me in for a 90 minute interview of which 40 minutes is a presentation.

No preliminary chats. No remote calls. A real life rock-up-and-see-us interview. With a panel of 3 (from the iCal Smile).

Why am I flabberghasted ? Is this imposter syndrome gone wild, or is my assertion to DW that firms don't just go from "here's a pile of cvs" to "lets have that one in for 90 minutes " in 2021 ??????

Having recruited myself, I know I would at least want a brief telephone chat before pulling a candidate in.

Or have they just realised how fucking amazing and skilled I am. I mean I am, but it usually takes a while for people to realise. Sometimes they might never realise Grin

I've got a week to prepare, but confidence is shot.

Would be grateful to hear if anyone else thinks this is odd - or normal. And if I can glean anything from the circumstances. Many thanks in advance.

On the basis I've been applying since last July, and the money is close to running out, I am also well aware that I'm in danger of developing magical thinking. And that won't do.

Is it with a recruiter or an actual firm ?
Are you cheap ( have you set out salary expectations?) Grin
IME there is a dearth of good candidates out there at the moment for qualified/expereinced roles and it maybe yours just hit the spot. That being said - I assume you know the role etc they are looking to fill????

thekingfisher · 15/03/2021 11:40

oh and congrats - if nothing else this will be great prep to get yourself ready for the next one...

AlexaShutUp · 15/03/2021 11:42

Doesn't seem unusual to me at all. Good luck!

thesandwich · 15/03/2021 11:44

You must be a very good match for the role and they may be in a hurry.
Try and get a practice interview in/ feedback on your presentation from old mates / industry pals in advance.
Good luck.

UserTwice · 15/03/2021 11:45

My firm goes from a pile of CVs to main interview process with no intervening stage. So I don't think it's completely unheard of.

We've done a lot of (IT) recruiting recently and found that we may get lots of applications but many don't have much experience or are looking for a promotion whereas we want someone that can already do the job iyswim. So if you already have the experience required for the job, you may well have stood out.

Twickerhun · 15/03/2021 11:47

Not unusual in my sectors (charity and higher education). Write down load so do examples of projects and achievements you’ve had at work over the years. You will need to call in examples of your excellence so think about them in advance. What are you proud if, what did you do, what was the outcome.

Atalune · 15/03/2021 11:49

Is it directly with the company?

Due a bit of your own due diligence- check their companies house, website and so on.

However huge congratulations and lots of luck!

IChangedMyNameForThisQ · 15/03/2021 13:08

Many thanks for such quick replies.

The power of LinkedIn has already located all the people that are in on the iCal for the interview.

On the basis I picked up DWs hobby of "going for interviews" not long after we met, I have no problem using any interview for practice.

But it's hard to shake a slight "this is bloody odd" feeling. Especially as it's an in person interview. Which given the present situation seems a bold move. (I wonder if putting I have been vaccinated on my cv mattered ?). Why not a 10 minute phone interview to winnow out 50% of applicants before then inviting 2 or 3 in for a 90 minute interview.

The company seems to be what might be called a 3rd pathway outfit, and does have a whiff of the more regimented about it - I suspect people with local government experience (of which I have none) might be less puzzled. Clearly the gap since last employment and now - while explained on my cv - hasn't scared anyone.

A 40 minute presentation makes me wonder too. My experience of task based interviews (confirmed when I've got the job ...) is that it's less about the solution and more about how you present it.

If nothing else, it'll be a change. Last time I left the house it felt like I was on holiday.

Many thanks again to all who replied. I'm going to have to find a way to silence that nagging voice which tells me there has to have been a mistake.

I'll post back after the interview - ideally knowing the outcome Smile

We're recruiting atm, not IT but a technical role in a multi-national. We did a sift of CVs (about 50) and went straight to first round interviews, although they were done over Teams rather than in person because of our office being closed. So not unusual that you haven't had a phonecall chat first. Don't over-think it, they wouldn't have invited you for an interview if they didn't think it would be worth their while!

GreyhoundG1rl · 15/03/2021 15:30

They already like you enough to invest this time in seeing you; get in there and smash it!

IChangedMyNameForThisQ · 15/03/2021 15:43

Thanks again for everyones kinds words ...

I guess a lot of this is the past year (why, what happened Grin) which seems to have multiplied, rather than simply added to my lack of confidence.

Have to sort out interview clothes too ... last time I wore a suit was being made redundant ...

I'm in a tech/it company and role.

We are DESPERATE for skilled people. Can recruit fast enough. And our competitors are similar.

You are in the right profession at the right time. Nothing weird about your situation with this interview. Prep like crazy and go for it. Ask for good money.

My "problem" is I have a ragbag of some wide and some deep skills (hopefully I don't need to plug my written communication skills). In my last role I went from summarising tech developments for board level decisions to spinning up and creating virtual machines on Azure to write a strategy paper on blockchain; which is what I used the estate for, and moving to cloud computing; which is why I did it on Azure. Two birds. One stone. Having entered that role from managing developers (on and offshore) and the office IT infrastructure (it was a very small company Grin)

Ask for good money

Rightly or wrongly, I've always been averse to numbers based roles. At the end of the day there are some roles I would practically pay to work in, whereas others ... well if it wasn't for the money ...

Oh, well. If nothing else, posting this is burning some mental stubble to clear the field for yield Grin

Well, as I read once "I cannae do anae mair" ...

I've got 2,600 words in a script that I'll be freestyling around (after all they might ask questions). And an 11-slide Powerpoint presentation that I'll use to punch the key phrases into the air.

Hopefully I've worked enough about what they do into it.

And DW has listened with the patience of a saint to me refining it.

I think I'll cover all bases and run the slide presentation under a narration and capture it all for upload to LinkedIn, and drop the panel (I have their email addresses) a link with copies of the script and presentation as well as my cv.

Clearly I think I'm worth it, even if they don't. Grin

Don't want to be too outing, but there may be a clue in what they do that makes choosing my cv (plus I don't know how many others) a case of putting their money where their mouth is. If you overthink things.

I wonder if they'll want me to wear a face covering ? (Because of Covid ? No, it's just I'm fucking ugly Grin)

That'll be fun.

Hopefully my next post here will be to say - as now - thanks again, I start next week (it's listed as immediate start).

I seriously have no idea where my P45 got to.

I know nothing about IT (despite being married for 30+ years to someone who also worked in it Grin) but just wanted to wish you all the luck.

Sounds like you're well prepared, which is key. Just also make sure you'e done your homework researching them and their strengths/weaknesses. And have an answer ready for any of their difficult questions - one I always find impossible is being asked what my greatest weakness is! (Like I'm really going to confess to any ... Grin)

Given your age, definitely make sure you pitch yourself at an appropriate financial level. Don't sell yourself short - either generally or financially.

Atalune · 21/03/2021 20:28

Yes don’t undersell yourself.don’t let them under cut you!

Your wet if style is rapid pace and a lot to take in so be aware that not everyone can keep up.

IChangedMyNameForThisQ · 24/03/2021 14:28

Well, it's done. And for a role that needed "immediate" availability, I have to wait till beginning of week after next ...

It's a greenfield role and the 2 guys interviewing me are currently making do as best they can - so I hope my observation that regardless of how I expect a working day to look like (one question) on hearing that I made it clear that #1 priority is to immediately take that work back from them so they can do their own roles.

It was supposed to last 90 minutes but went on for two hours. Mainly because I've never been shy. Or retiring.

I hate waiting.

On the plus side, it was a good chance to get into a modern office after 4 years and now realise that making drinks for colleagues is out, as is teaspoon sharing and crossing on the stairs.

Also good to find out that my suit still fitted and I could still do a tie up.

Whole interview was conducted with masks. Not a problem , but I did feel I'd rather wasted a shave ...

From the thrust of the questions which were very tech-light, I'm really hoping it's a right person rather than right resume for the job, job.

I carried this thread in my head, so many thanks all. Hopefully I can update week after next.

Sussexmidwife · 24/03/2021 17:05

@IChangedMyNameForThisQ Sounds promising. My fingers & toes are crossed for you!

IChangedMyNameForThisQ · 01/04/2021 10:14

So ...

like all good blues songs, woke up this morning. Missed call. Voicemail.

Picked up voicemail, it was one of the guys who interviewed me (the guy I'd report to) asking me to call him about the role.

Shitting myself, I did ... and was offered the position. Starting Tuesday.

Unless this is the cruellest Aprils Fools, I'm waiting for the paperwork to be sent though - but he did say he had 10am meeting. Which I imagine is why I've not got it yet.

DW has done a little dance too. And we were going to pop over and see out lad later. So that's some great news to sit on.

Many thanks to all who replied here. As you may (?) be able to tell, having been out of the game has really done a number on my confidence. Let's hope I can bend that straight now.

Happy Easter all.
