Part time hours and bank holiday Mondays

65 replies

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/01/2021 20:06

Hello, can someone advise?

I currently work part time (4 hours per day 4 days per week = 16 hours total). My days off are the weekends and one regular set day during the week.

I want to ask my employer if I can change my day off to Mondays.

Does that mean that my salary will go up slightly? So, some of my regular weekly days off will now be bank holiday Mondays which I will be paid for?

Does anyone understand what I mean? Even writing it down I'm getting confused.

She has her 17 days holidays at other times. So in effect 17 days and the separate 6 days Bank Holidays.

I've just looked at holiday entitlement without bank holidays on gov.uk and our entitlement is 14 days. However we both get 3 days bank holidays in that but my colleague gets an additional 6 days off and me only 2.

@TroysMammy

takingthebiscuits excuse me if I seem to not be able to grasp this, figures are not my strongest skill. Eg we both work 144 days a year, we both have 17 days annual leave. My colleague working the first part of the week will have an extra 6 days off in 2021 as the business is not open on Bank Holidays so only works 121 days a year but as I work the end of the week I get 2 days off for Bank Holidays, so I work 125 days a year. Therefore my colleague will have 23 days off and I get 19 days off in 2021. Is this correct?
I guess it depends who your employer is....but I am NHS too.... so I work 4 days with Monday off.... so I get my 33 days annual leave plus 4/5ths of 8 days bank holidays which is 6.4days..... this is all converted to hours .....so 307.5hrs..... so every time I take a holiday off I take 7.5hrs per day.... if a bank holiday falls on a Monday....I take no hours off....if it falls on tues to fri then I take 7.5 hrs off.... so by having Monday’s off I am able to take my pro rata bank holiday hours off mostly when I want them ( eg as extra leave) .... this is more beneficial to me which is why I choose to have Monday’s off. On the other hand, my colleague, who has Fridays off, has to take all her pro rata bH hours for the bank holidays...... at the end of the year...we have both had exactly the same amount of time off.... this is by far the fairest way....I’m not sure all places will work the same thoUgh
@Dee1975 that’s how I thought it would work too if your work place is shut on bank hol it would mean you always get the day off so essentially it’s better to have a different week day off Confused
No because you get the extra pro rata bank holiday hours to take when you want.... so when a bank holiday falls on a Monday I have Monday off as usual but am also given 6.4hrs to add onto my annual leave

Kitkat151 · 24/01/2021 13:30

Sorry 6 hrs not 6.4

Interesting thread. I need to re-calculate mine.

Kitkat151 I work as a GP Receptionist, been there 11 years and have had no increase in holiday entitlement.

Hi Troy After 10 years in the NHS annual leave is 33 days ( pro rata for part time) plus 8 days BH ( pro rata again for part time) Google.... nursing notes nhs annual leave and holiday calculator.... it will do it all for you!
TroysMammy · 24/01/2021 15:06

Thanks Kitkat. Another colleague is full time, 40 hours a week. She's been there close on 20 years and has 20 days holiday and 8 days BH. I've told her that she should be getting more holidays. I had 27 & 8 days BH when I worked in a bank after 21 years service and working 35 hours pw. She won't do any about it though.

A friend who works part time in another GP surgery gets more holidays than I do and if staff aren't off sick the previous year they get an additional 2 or 3 days holiday! I've obviously been given the shitty end of the stick.

TroysMammy · 24/01/2021 15:19

Would it apply to GP receptionists because we are not paid by the NHS but by the Surgery but we do have and pay into the NHS pension scheme.

@TroysMammy

I don’t believe it does apply even though you pay into NHS Pension as GPs are in effect private businesses contracted to provide NHS Services.

takingthebiscuits · 24/01/2021 15:36

Check your work contract though! As they are all different.

Some might mirror NHS Terms and Conditions to attract Staff from main NHS but not always!

takingthebiscuits · 24/01/2021 15:37

And some rules that are around bank holidays apply generally anyway and are not exclusive to NHS.

sorry Troy...I don’t know.....but if it doesn’t it’s pretty shit isn’t it..... bet the GPs get more than 20 days AL 🙄 ..... but the bank holiday thing should be standard really ( like taking the biscuit says). X

Thanks both. Perhaps I'll sow a seed with my Manager when I'm back in on Wednesday, if they are not too busy with covid jabs.
