My CV has made me look better than I am.

I have a job interview tomorrow based on the fact that I look just right for the job ‘on paper’. Which is true. On paper I do, in capability I am sure I am not. My current job title makes me sound like I do much more than I do and that’s the problem. I’ve not lied about anything whatsoever but it just sounds so much better than reality. For example; I produce invoices and chase debtors. What that means is I use the word template the company has had for years to make an invoice and I drop customers an email when they haven’t paid. Or diary management of the directors. What that means is I make appointments and scribble them in the book. How am I going to handle this? Be upfront and say sorry but my fancy job title has mislead you? I have thought I should perhaps change my cv going forward.

You're going to be fine. I do admin too and sometimes I'm like "I just do a lot of photocopying". But I also do the things you mentioned (finance and diary management).

Hi Everyone, thank you all so much for the well wishes. The news is.... I GOT THE JOB!!! And I start TOMORROW OMG!!! And it wasn’t even my ‘skills’ that sold me, he said he had seen a few CVs with more experience but they just flitted from job to job, where as I have only ever had two jobs, one I held for ten years and one for five. He said he doesn’t want to train someone who is going to leave him after 2 years and by looking at my CV it’s unlikely I would do that. Which is true, I hate being the newbie and like to be somewhere long term. I can’t believe it! But of course now I feel physically sick about tomorrow! I did think Friday would be a good day to start though, as I can regather myself over the weekend lol! Thank you all again. And if anyone has any first day advice it would be most welcome!

4sandie · 25/06/2020 11:17

Great news, OP! It made me smile! Congratulations!!! Star

Abitlikeabiscuit · 25/06/2020 11:18

Wow well done OP!! Congratulations! That's cheered me up :)

Moltenpink · 25/06/2020 11:21

Amazing! Well done. I had that exact panic after getting an interview for my current job, I thought they must have misunderstood my cv! Best of luck tomorrow.

PAND0RA · 25/06/2020 11:32

Well done.

Just remember they have hired you for the long term, you don’t have to know everything on day 1.

AdaColeman · 25/06/2020 11:37

Oh that’s wonderful news @c1JSU, very well done!! 🍾 🎉 🎉 🍾

CalmConfident · 25/06/2020 11:51

Brilliant!

Rebelwithallthecause · 25/06/2020 11:54

Look up imposter syndrome

Your haven’t lied on your cv. You are capable.
Even the most skilled worker has to learn a new companies processes

FinallyHere · 25/06/2020 12:02

Congratulations.

And another vote from me for you to look up 'imposter syndrome' We all have it, well all normal people, psychopaths I understand don't do much. It's helpful to know that everyone has that voice saying you will be found out.

Hearing it, and not listening to it is the trick.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 25/06/2020 12:09

Congratulations OP, brilliant news.

Advice for the first day - relax, you’ll never take it all in. I find it takes about a fortnight before a new job role “clicks” and you suddenly realise how it all pieces together.

chatterbugmegastar · 25/06/2020 12:50

Well done! They'll train you and you'll have loads of new skills 😊😊

Fishfingersandwichplease · 25/06/2020 15:42

Omg amazing news!!! Well done!! I always think it is more about how you will fit in rather than previous experience or qualifications. Good luck for the first day!!!

AdaColeman · 25/06/2020 15:50

First Day Tips, keep a small note book & pen handy, for jotting down things, sometimes the first day can get a bit of an information overload !
Lots of luck, we will all be flying the flag for you!

Apileofballyhoo · 25/06/2020 16:38

I'm so pleased for you. Also he mentioned training so you're not expected to know everything. Well done well done well done.

c1JSU · 25/06/2020 16:57

Thanks everyone! I most definitely will take a notepad and pen! I’ll actually come back to this tomorrow to let you all know how it went!

Hi everyone, sorry to bore just wanted to update on my first day! Felt absolutely sick with nerves but managed to turn up on time. Luckily (and I was so relieved!) lots of their processes are similar. However there is one process that oh gosh I cannot get my head around, I am panicking that I will never get it. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I am hoping that’s because it’s only day one and it will come naturally eventually, fingers crossed. I’m so worried I’ll make a mistake and it will be a very costly one. Colleagues seem lovely, I really hit it off with one lady. Not too sure about the boss tho. Think he will quickly get fed up with me asking questions. I’ll give it a good try though, you don’t really grasp a new job properly for a while do you, so I’ll see how it goes!

Moltenpink · 26/06/2020 21:39

Sounds promising! What was the process that was a bit tricky? Well done for surviving the first day.

Abitlikeabiscuit · 26/06/2020 21:47

Aw congratulations on your first day! Don't worry about the one thing you can't do yet. Remember they didn't pick you because they thought you could do the job perfectly straight away.
Go back next week when you're hopefully a little calmer, try again, and if it's still as confusing, be really honest and tell them what you will need to get up to speed.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 26/06/2020 22:04

Been wondering how you got on!! Don't panic, they won't expect you to learn it all straight away!! Always nice to have first day over and done with xx

livefornaps · 26/06/2020 22:12

Don't worry honestly I have been in positions like yours - every job I've had has been very different to the last. Breathe. You're on day one or two?! They will just be glad to see someone who is punctual, enthusiastic and trying their best. Believe me. Make sure you get enough sleep every night and enjoy the weekend. Very very well done!!

AdaColeman · 26/06/2020 22:20

Don’t panic @c1JSU, you’ve got the weekend to gather yourself together. Next week you can always ask for a bit more training on that one procedure.

PAND0RA · 26/06/2020 22:22

Well done on your first day.

And of course you will learn the new process, once you’ve been through it a few times when you are feeling calmer.

I’m glad you hit it off with one colleague, I’m sure you can ask her some questions and not have to ask the boss all the time.

Remember that at first all you notice is how things are different to what you are used to. But after a few days you will start to see the similarities.

And once you get to know the new company and their business, you will probably understand why they do things the way they do.

puzzledpiece · 27/06/2020 10:09

People with imposter syndrome (I'm one) think they got where they are by luck and not being found out for what they really are/think they are ie incompetent. The reality is you are perfectly competent and it's not 'luck' that's got you by but genuine ability.

You'll be fine
