Would you work at a company that has this policy

I kid you not, the policy is titled "Don't be a dick policy" and the policy itself is "Don't be a dick".

I feel like it's a massive red flag.

Sounds like a not very successful attempt to be funny. If everything else was OK about the company and the job, it wouldn't bother me.

GeekyGirl42 · 31/01/2020 12:59

I see it that way, but at the same time - in the company handbook??

How big a place?

They've got about 50 employees.

If I'd just got a job there I'd not resign because of that.
I'd maybe ask a colleague if it ever gets used.
e.g. Does the manager suddenly announce that someone is being a dick and fire them for it??

BoneAppleTeaa · 01/02/2020 17:25

I would, but then it’s a line I’ve used when describing the sort of policy I would put in place!

RJnomore1 · 01/02/2020 17:27

To be fair that’s my entire policy for life and the one rule I set for my kids.

TheHouseWithTheBambooDoor · 01/02/2020 17:28

@Happityhap GrinGrinGrin

iklboo · 01/02/2020 17:33

I'd vote for changing the Ten Commandments to that. Much more concise.

Nacreous · 01/02/2020 17:38

We used to have a set of pool rules which had a rule at the end, "Don't be a dick"

This is a rule I wish people followed more often. I don't think it would put me off a company.

CollaterlieSistersSister · 01/02/2020 17:45

Although not written that way, that’s exactly how our policies are verbally conflated. Easily understood.

And it’s the first question we ask ourselves when interviewing - are they a dick.

ChainsawBear · 01/02/2020 17:48

I'd want to know how it was interpreted. But more companies should have and enforce this rule, frankly. I'm a big believer in the No Asshole Rule.

Pixilicious · 01/02/2020 17:51

I wish my company had that policy! Mind you we’d lose most of the directors...

Glassmami · 01/02/2020 17:59

I would 😂 wish my employer would take on this policy!

ILikTheBred · 01/02/2020 18:02

Is it not a rip off of the old google motto ‘Don’t be evil’?

I wouldn’t leave a company for having a motto like this. It’s far better than the usual corporate ‘mission, vision and values’ guff. I don’t see what’s wrong with ‘don’t be a jerk’ as a rule to live by - it’s basically saying respect each other and don’t do asshole things.

BlueJava · 01/02/2020 18:03

A previously company I worked at had a "Dickhead of the Year Award!" Personally a handbook that said the same as yours would not make me resign.

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 18:05

Is it a family-run business by any chance?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/02/2020 18:07

It's the first rule of Buddhism.

LynetteScavo · 02/02/2020 08:52

I think my workplace should have this policy.

AgentProvocateur · 02/02/2020 08:54

That’s our family motto. If any one of us is going on a night out (adult kids) the standard whatsapp message is ‘enjoy yourself and DBAD!’ Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 02/02/2020 08:56

Problem is its very subjective. Do they invoke the policy and discipline people under it?

mrbob · 02/02/2020 08:59

I regularly say this should be our motto at work. If that is all we can achieve in a day then it would be a very good start. Unfortunately we seem unable to even obtain that low goal 😂

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/02/2020 09:00

More direct way of saying civility in the workplace - shown to improve wellbeing and save lives in health care and the air line industry.

frasersmummy · 02/02/2020 09:02

It's completely unprofessional and would make me wonder how professional they are in other areas of the business

I would be very way
