Would you work at a company that has this policy

I kid you not, the policy is titled "Don't be a dick policy" and the policy itself is "Don't be a dick".

I feel like it's a massive red flag.

It would make me think the company was one of those zany "you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps" type of places with a "hilarious" boss a bit like David Brent and I'd think that actually I'm way too old and humourless for that sort of shite.

flowery · 02/02/2020 09:06

Sounds very try-hard. They desperately want to think of themselves as being a cool workplace. They’re failing.

Napmum · 02/02/2020 09:27

Personally I see it as a big plus. Why sugar coat something? What's your actual objection? Mild swearing written down? The reference to male genitals? The bluntness? Or something else like the lack of definition of what behaviour counts as "being a dick"? It's not clear

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 02/02/2020 09:30

Unusual to see it worded that way in a company setting but can absolutely get behind the idea! It wouldn’t raise a red flag for me.

Crunched · 02/02/2020 09:33

Interesting variety of views - it would be fascinating to know the nature of the respondents to see if it is an industry, age, regional etc. thing.
I, by the way,(construction, middle-aged,middle-England) think it is fine.

TheGinGenie · 02/02/2020 09:36

I worked somewhere with that policy but ironically the owner was the only one who WAS a dick

TheGinGenie · 02/02/2020 09:37

Agree with flowery that it sounds try hard to me. "Look how cool we are"

Rystall · 02/02/2020 09:38

It’s one of the famous All Black principles. Sweep the Sheds / Be a good ancestor/ No dickheads. Displayed in the training room of our very conservative workplace. It’s all about no one being too important to do the small stuff. Direct and to the point. Not a red flag at all.

BobLemon · 02/02/2020 09:40

@AgentProvocateur that’s brill! I read it out to my OH and I think that acronym will shortly be entering our own family language Grin

peachgreen · 02/02/2020 09:51

It's a fairly famous Internet saying - Wheaton's Law. I'd assume the company had quite a nerdy culture which would appeal to me but might not to everyone.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 09:53

What exactly does it mean though? Don’t gossip, take your turn to make the tea, attend all meetings, don’t be late/leave early, don’t eat stinky food at your desk?

What hassled said. As a middle aged woman I'm quite happy to use that sort of language amongst friends and close colleagues but I'd assume I wasn't young and hip and probably Blakey enough for the company. I'd also assume they hadn't thought through any inclusion / diversity issues.

camsie · 02/02/2020 10:04

It would be a plus for me.
I'd like to work there!

1066vegan · 02/02/2020 10:25

I like the principle but would find it odd language to use in a company handbook; it seems unprofessional. I would wonder if I would fit into the workplace

corduroyal · 02/02/2020 10:28

Depends who the bosses are. If I think I'd agree with their definition of dickishness, then sure.

My employer's policy is basically 'take the piss and you're out'. Very little management interference but they trust you not to take the piss and if you do, you're out.

EBearhug · 02/02/2020 10:34

This. It's basically what our code of conduct says, but over several pages, so there isn't any ambiguity about "what do they mean by 'don't be a dick'?" And in professional language.
