Moved abroad and sacked 4 months later

So, me, Dh and our dcs have moved abroad to an EU country. Dh had landed a great role with an multinational company.

We were happy at the chance to experience new way of life but it was a big decision for us. And an expensive one so far.

His contract stated six months probation. He had his three month probation meeting last week. No issues. Nothing was flagged. He'd been working really hard - late nights, one weekend etc.

Yesterday, he's been told his services are no longer required because of cost cutting direction from HO. No other reason was given.

He had to leave the building immediately as if he had done something wrong. He was mortified.

Apparently, he is entitled to nothing as it was during his probation period.

We are stunned. The dcs are in enrolled in school and are all happy there. Dd has started her GCSE course this year. Dh's job package was part payment of the school fees.

We've had to sign a three year rental agreement (that's the norm here).

And now we are utterly shafted by this completely out the blue sacking.

Any advice as to what we can do? It just seems totally unethical, not that that will have any weight.

Or can DH DH join the hoards of commuters from Germany, France & Belgium that commute to Lux? Appreciate that the commute is usually the other way round - but might be worth exploring

Flowers - it's utterly shit

And Lux isn't even a dream destination...

WhatFreshHell71 · 19/10/2019 11:02

Oh I don't know. Lux is a lovely place to live. Very expensive though.

Sorry- don’t mean to be rude about Lux - it’s just where I work we have difficulties getting people to work in our Lux office

Would that amount balance out the cost of rent/school fees and relocation?

WhatFreshHell71 · 20/10/2019 18:34

No. Nothing like cover the costs.

But the company say they've done nothing wrong so it's merely a goodwill gesture.

Try to negotiate the 22k up, mention you have a lawyer, and say you are considering your legal options....

But ultimately 22k is better than nothing.

PurbeckStone · 23/10/2019 09:48

You need to find an employment lawyer and get advice now. That clause the company refuse to address may mean you have leverage to negotiate a better settlement. Or it might not and it turns out they've done everything by the book. In that case take the 22k (but with no conditions like actually having to move back attached) and then decide what to do. If your DH can find another job in LUX or commutable distance there's no reason to rush back and your DD can finish her GCSEs without interruption.

Good luck and stay strong! Flowers
