Should we grass on her?

Bit of a dilemma.

We have a temp at work and we all have our own drawers. She is basically covering for someone who is away on sabatical.

The lady who is away came in and handed in her notice yesterday and came in to collect all her stuff. She asked the temp if she could get into the drawer as she had left some money in there (about £50 bagged up in change).

The temp replied that she had run out of money and taken it to the bank, changed it up and spent it. She said she would give it back.... she had not one ounce of embarrassment and was talking loudly and laughing. The lady asked for it and she said not until Friday.

Can you believe she had the audacity to call the shots as to when she would give the money.

The other people in my department are mortified and are saying it is tantamount to theft and want to report it to our manager.

What do you think?

What does the lady whose money it is think about it?

chopster · 08/08/2007 12:46

Why hasnt the woman whose money it was complained?

ProfYaffle · 08/08/2007 12:48

I'd grass on her in a heartbeat.

pania · 08/08/2007 12:51

I would report it.. and if I were the one who had been stolen from, I already would have!

And telling her she can't have it till Friday -wtf? That's outrageous!

newlifenewname · 08/08/2007 12:51

Goodness! Whose money does this temp think it is fgs?

Report her for theft - it is theft as there was no evidence of intent to return the money.

mixedmama · 08/08/2007 12:52

She was just so shocked i think. Just told her to give the money to a friend of hers, and then ranted outside about it. I think she was just genuinely shocked at the brazeness of it all... and she doesnt have to actually work out her notice as she is on sabatical. the thing is the other girls feel that they cant leave their stuff around now and for that reason feel they should say something.

She's a thief.

Get rid!

QueenEagle · 08/08/2007 12:52

Theft, no doubt. Call the police immediately.

flowerybeanbag · 08/08/2007 12:53

yes report her, definitely. And if she is a temp and hasn't been there that long she can and should be got rid of sharpish, with an attitude like that.

BraceYourselfMavis · 08/08/2007 12:55

It was rather naive and foolish of the woman to go away on sabbatical and leave £50 in a drawer that was also going to be used by someone else.

The temp needs to pay the money back.

I'd leave it to the other woman to deal with - whether she gets the manager or the police involved is up to her.

mixedmama · 08/08/2007 12:57

No doubt it was stupid to leave the money, that was my initial reaction. I think the problem we are all having now is how comfortable are we to all leave our stuff lying around. Plus her complete non-embarrassment about the situation and paying it back at her convenience.

chopster · 08/08/2007 13:01

I'd probably be shocked too, given her brazen attitude. I think though, at the very least, management need to be told. This temp would have probably kept the cash had the other lady not come back for it, and god knows how many other people she has ripped off.

lizziemun · 08/08/2007 13:47

I would tell management and ask for locks to be put on your drawer so you have somewhere to lock away your handbag.

mixedmama · 08/08/2007 13:50

we do have locks.... but because she was covering for this other lady she was given keys.

OP posts:
RubySlippers · 08/08/2007 13:50

she is a thief
report her to the agency and senior management to be dealt with

i left stuff in my office before i went on mat leave, and it was there when i returned as is to be expected

MightyMoosh · 09/08/2007 12:06

I'd report her... at a previous job I left a sweatshirt (an expensive one!) on the hook, locked up and was the first in but it was stolen, other departments of the hotel have keys so anyone could have taken it. I still regret not reporting it. This temp is a thief!

quint · 09/08/2007 12:11

report it

nailpolish · 09/08/2007 12:14

what if the woman hadnt come back before the temp had left? would she have ever mentioned it? that is awful! if it had been in a purse would she still have nicked it?
OMG!

flowerybeanbag · 09/08/2007 12:16

she may have that attitude because she may be assuming that because she is a temp, no one will bother doing anything because she will be gone soon anyway.
Even if she is gone soon, it's important to report her and to get management to report her to whatever agency she came from and get an assurance that they will not use her again.

mixedmama · 09/08/2007 12:19

I believe she is actually planning to apply for the vacancy, which is why I think it is such an issue.

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 09/08/2007 12:21

in that case even more important to report her, and also absolutely unbelieveable attitude if she is hoping for the job!

mixedmama · 09/08/2007 12:23

We are both actually temps and I had been approached about the rolle, but as i am pregnant had to turn it down so I think she believes it is a given that she will get it. Unfortunately, i feel that altho it needs to be reported it should be one of the perm girls to do it.

OP posts:
maisemor · 09/08/2007 12:25

Is anybody going to do something about it then. Or are you all waiting to see if she gets the money back?

GroaningGameGirly · 09/08/2007 12:26

Weird behaviour and most definitely theft. I'd get rid of her if she's only a temp, with as little notice as possible. If she makes a fuss, tell her she's a common little thief and report her to the police.
I'm quite shocked, actually.

flowerybeanbag · 09/08/2007 12:27

erm, 'scuse me, you had to turn it down because you are pregnant?

Please reassure me that this was your decision and is because you don't want to come back after maternity leave?
