Should we grass on her?

Bit of a dilemma.

We have a temp at work and we all have our own drawers. She is basically covering for someone who is away on sabatical.

The lady who is away came in and handed in her notice yesterday and came in to collect all her stuff. She asked the temp if she could get into the drawer as she had left some money in there (about £50 bagged up in change).

The temp replied that she had run out of money and taken it to the bank, changed it up and spent it. She said she would give it back.... she had not one ounce of embarrassment and was talking loudly and laughing. The lady asked for it and she said not until Friday.

Can you believe she had the audacity to call the shots as to when she would give the money.

The other people in my department are mortified and are saying it is tantamount to theft and want to report it to our manager.

What do you think?

Well she is due to give the money back tomorrow, but whether she gives the money back or not is irrelevant, she just shouldnt have taken it. I think they are trying to see whether they can get the girl whose money it was to actully do it.

No way does the company want to take an untrustworthy bint like that on permanently, believe me. Had similar problems here. Major hassle, stress and expense for everyone.

This needs to be reported for the sake of the company. Theft (as you'd expect) is an instant sacking offence. Your company don;t want to employ someone who would hekp herself to other people's belongings. Def not the kind of person you'd want anywhere near your customers. If it isn't reported and something even worse happens, what will you do? Really, you need to do something. Have a chat with one of your managers in confidence, or get someone else to do it. They NEED to know.

Absolutely needs reporting and managament should issue a memo to all staff (incl temps) reminding them that management are not responsible for theft from personnel's own drawers pointing out that there has been an issue over money being "taken" or "stolen" (depending on how seriously management view the situation) from a set of drawers in recent weeks.

Should embarrass the thief for that is what she is (you are only borrowing the money if if is lent to you and she took it without asking or telling anyone).

I mean, you have a menber of staff rifling through the drawers in the desk she has been allocated, comes across some money and pinches it - give this woman a permanent job? Er, no.

mixedmama,

did you grass on the temp ?

mixedmama · 10/08/2007 11:13

She paid up today.... but still. Seems like all the perm staff are just gonna let it slide, nobody is making any real effort to sort it.

they will have to watch her like a hawk then if she gets the permanent position

i am that you didnt apply for a job becuase you are pg!

in my previous job i remember we employed a woman who attended the interview 5 months pg - she went straight onto mat leave and started when her baby was around 6 months old - there is no reason why you cant apply for a job when you are pg

I suppose. Hadnt really thought of it like that. I think I am just going to see how it goes. I know that they really like me and it has been said by various people that the manager has commented that she wants me, just unfortunate that I am pregnant. I know it is illegal, but this is general convo not official stance. Ihave been told by numerous people that I should defo express an interest in at least a p/t position when I return to work.

She has been reported and the manager has spoken to her, not sure what was said she went straight on lunch, and she is still here so they obv didnt throw the book
