Can I ask for your most luxurious/not so exciting employee perks?

Most luxe from previous jobs:

On-site brasserie with heavily subsided breakfast/lunch/dinner - 40p for a cappuccino/£2 for a healthy stir fry

Xmas party would be in a European city each year, flights and accommodation covered for you +1, free food and bar

Leaving/baby/wedding collection most Directors would put in around £50 each; so people got around £1k in vouchers

My current role...free milk. That's it. Had to purchase my own laptop and have to use my own mobile phone - have unlimited minutes so that's not an issue but got 2 calls when I was on holiday last week, one I answered thinking it was Vodafone calling me back about an upgrade (it wasn't) the other I just left to voicemail. Ho hum... Saying that they do have a decent maternity leave policy (enhanced pay) shame I'm too old for it now though!

We get free tea, coffee, milk, squash and fruit. Christmas party is free and they also do a piss up event in the summer.

There is a canteen but it's not subsided, it's very expensive. Another branch has a subsidised one, apparently they can get lunch for less than £1.

A previous firm I was at took everyone to Amsterdam for a Christmas party weekend, that was pretty cool.

PoisonousSmurf · 01/10/2018 17:56

Years ago before Centrica killed the AA, we used to get £30 in vouchers each month that our department got it's targets. It used to rack up pretty fast and I was able to save £££ to buy white goods for our new house.
We even had a free Xmas lunch and were able to bring in booze at lunchtime!
But then, the AA shops were axed, the perks cut and no more Xmas lunch!

DancingintheSpoonlight · 01/10/2018 17:57

My job is quite target based so we regularly have prize draws for those who have met certain targets including gift vouchers, meals out, cinema tickets.
In busy periods and during training we get McDonald's/KFC etc.
We have opportunities to pay for things through work (not looked into how this works tbh) and you can buy things like cars and pay a monthly amount straight from your wages etc.
Free drinks and sometimes have free lunches.

buckleten · 01/10/2018 18:09

Free Christmas party, car, fuel and phone (taxed on those!!) health plan, lunch once a month, tea, coffee and biscuits and fruit.

Chottie · 01/10/2018 18:13

Absolutely nothing! We have to pay for tea, coffee and milk. They have taken away our water coolers so we have tepid tap water. If clients buy us a thank you present, even a packet of biscuits, we're not allowed to accept it. Can you tell I work in the public sector?

Ditto for me, we even bought our own kettle :)

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 01/10/2018 20:06

My first job in the "big smoke" was with a publisher at a time when there was money to burn and we'd enjoy restaurant lunches two or three times a week, drinks/nibbles on Friday night. They were fun times!

FreakForHummous · 01/10/2018 20:12

When I was younger I worked in a local pub. We were often bought drinks during our shift and were allowed these once the shift had finished. I'd usually have around 8-10 drinks behind the bar so the owner let me take bottled beers home instead. My fridge at home was constantly full of beer!

SciFiFan2015 · 01/10/2018 20:17

Free tea, coffee and milk. Free lunch if having a team meeting over a lunch time.
Childcare vouchers
Buy a bike scheme
That's it really.
I work for a charity so there's never going to be much in the way of perks.
I think our Trustees and CEO make a donation to cover our Christmas party costs but these are always kept low and planned round training/team meetings to keep the costs down.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 01/10/2018 20:19

I meet celebrities and get fed and watered on every site I work on

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 01/10/2018 20:20

Actually I think the free food is the only perk Grin

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 01/10/2018 20:25

I get free tea/coffee squash, and biscuits/cake.

Staff discount too.

Not too bad.

Pluckedpencil · 01/10/2018 20:29

Before: big Christmas hamper, Gucci/Hugo boss freebies and very cheap perfume, as well as household products and nappies very cheap in staff shop.
Now: organic restaurant at lunch with amazing food, coffee, dessert and sometimes wine(!) for... £4 and 50% off all their medicines. It's great!!

Fatted · 01/10/2018 20:31

The first 'proper' job I ever had out of uni used to have lots of incentives and amazing prizes for those who won. There were cars, £10k cash prizes, holidays etc. I won a European weekend break.

It was a horrible job though and not worth it. There was a pathetic pension, an expectation that you were to work overtime on top of a 40 hour week and they sacked anyone who attempted to join a union.

Wine in meetings and champagne on someone's birthday. Lavish themed Xmas party - partners also invited and free bar and food. Higher hotel limits so I used to book myself into the Langham when I travelled to London.

Also organised a senior director's leaving do for our little team and we went to a restaurant/club in Mayfair, Madam Tussaud's for a laugh (in work time) and all stayed at a nice hotel - all paid for.

When I organised a conference in a European country - as an organiser, the hotel gave me the nicest room. I had so many lights to turn out it took me 30 mins to figure the switches out first night. I had an entire flat basically with plasma TVs everywhere and a view of the golf course Smile

Barely get to stay in a Premier Inn these days and I don't have a company card and have to pay all expenses myself. Then wait to claim it back. It's shite. I paid £150 for a hotel back in August and still waiting.

BlueJava · 01/10/2018 20:51

We get a load of events which are well done and some ppl call them perks- personally I try and avoid most of them! We get free drinks (herbal tea, lattes, coke, etc) and free fruit and subsidized food, pool table, video games to play, subsidized Virgin gym, childcare vouchers, bike/transport loan, lots of lunchtime events we can do. I know I sound boring but I like to get in work early in the day, work solidly and leave a bit early. Mostly so I can see kids/cook dinner/do housework.

namechangedtoday15 · 01/10/2018 20:53

Previous (public sector) job - free parking, subsidised canteen, free vending machines, regular free meals at central training centre, trip to Paris on Eurostar. Paid for a part time Masters. Worked there 4 years and my final pension salary is still worth more than the stakeholder pension I've contilribured to for 15 years Confused. I appreciate times have changed!!

Now in private sector. Tea & coffee. That's it!

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 01/10/2018 20:53

Free coffee, hot chocolate, tea etc.
Laptop provided

That's about it Confused

VictoriaBun · 01/10/2018 20:56

Work in a prison.
Free gym at lunchtimes.
Meals for 50p - £1.00 cooked by prisoners
Hair dyed and highlighted by prisoners ( who are getting city & guilds trained ) no cost to me, whilst I'm still getting paid.

Wauden · 01/10/2018 20:58

Free flu jab, decent pension rate and the chance to top up pension contribution. So its a long term thing. Um, that's it for now.
