No redundancy after nearly 40 years at job

My ex’s department is being moved to somewhere over 20 miles away and because he can apply for a job there, they say he will not be entitled to redundancy. He doesn’t want the extra travel time added on to his day as won’t see his children as much and they don’t pay him enough to cover the extra costs. Understandably he’s in a right state and has been signed off work. I believe he’s had legal advice and seen CAB. Any ideas? TIA

The OP says he needs to apply for the new job at the new site are they attempting to pull a fast one to reducevtheir pay out to him aka he applies for this new job make him redundant so instead of having to pay 40 years of service they only need to pay the servce for this new job.

Yeah OPs account has been a bit confusing. Because of course if what he wants is redundancy, having to apply for a job on the new site may not be such a bad thing. If he's been offered one already and told it's that or fuck off, less so.

I agree they do sound a bit crap if they won't even give anything towards travel costs. It's not an obligation or anything like that, but it is quite common, even just for a fixed period. Not that whether they're a bit mean or not makes any difference to the legal rights here, of course.
