Being paid in lieu

Hi everyone
I was dismissed from work at the beginning of the month due to long term absence.

On my final report from the school it said"you will be paid 11 weeks pay in lieu of notice as required by your contract of employment"

Can someone explain to me what this means.
Thanks

I think it means you will be paid for 11 weeks of work from the time you were dismissed.

Guardsman18 · 29/03/2018 08:57

I'd say it meant that the notice period you and they would usually give is 11 weeks but as you're not working it, you will have the payment.

Does that make sense?!

Farahilda · 29/03/2018 08:59

It means that your contract stipulates 12 weeks notice, but they want to deal with it all now (presumably, as you mention a school, because admin often does fit more tidily round terms).

But they cannot disadvantage you, so they are going to pay you what you would have earned in the notice period (without you having actually go into work, and being free to start a new job).

It's a normal way to go about things.

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:04

Ok so I will be getting paid 11 weeks from my dismissal date

But I didn't get paid today

What dates are on the report?

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:17

I was dismissed from work on the 7 march

OP posts:
Guardsman18 · 29/03/2018 09:25

And pay day is usually at the end of the month?

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:26

It's today

LIZS · 29/03/2018 09:28

Ring payroll?

Guardsman18 · 29/03/2018 09:29

as LIZS says

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:30

Was going to email HR at work but don't wanna sound desperate

How can I word my email ?

OP posts:
LIZS · 29/03/2018 09:33

Ring not email unless you are happy for this to roll into April. A simple "hi, its cupcakes speaking. I have a letter from x date telling me I am due a payment for pilon but it doesn't seem to have arrived in my account today as expected. Could you advise me when I will receive it please?" Have your employee number and letter to hand.

FrangipaniBlue · 29/03/2018 09:35

They probably just missed the payroll cut off date for March to make the adjustment so you'll get 9 weeks pay in April (because you've had 3 weeks from 7 March to the end on the month in this months pay).

They've done you a favour really, if you'd had it all in March it would have went against your 17/18 earnings for tax, and could potentially have taken you into a new tax bracket depending on your salary.

Now though the 9 weeks pay will go against your 18/19 earnings which is better for you depending on how long it takes you to find another job Smile

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:35

Lizs
Shall I call payroll or HR

OP posts:
FrangipaniBlue · 29/03/2018 09:37

I'm assuming you've had your normal March pay today, or did you mean you haven't been paid at all??

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:37

Thanks everyone

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:38

I got paid a really little amount! £70

OP posts:
FrangipaniBlue · 29/03/2018 09:41

That's bizarre!!??

Definitely ring HR and find out what's happened - good luck!

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 09:42

Ok will do

I've spoken to HR
She said I will get paid a lump sum in the April pay
They have put it in hold.

Another question I want to ask you guys is I am going to appeal there decision to dismiss me. If I win my case an get my job back would I still get the lieu money
HR said this is money am owed for my 11 years service at the school

AmazingGrace16 · 29/03/2018 14:29

how much absence did you have?

LIZS · 29/03/2018 14:30

If it is like redundancy money it may be repayable if you are reemployed. If your appeal is pending that may be why it has been held over. Is it really worth the aggravation rather than making a fresh start elsewhere?

flowery · 29/03/2018 14:56

If you get your job back your employment will be continuous so you won't need paying in lieu of notice, you'll just get paid continuously.

If you're appealing then I imagine that's why they've put a hold on it yes.

Cupcakes12 · 29/03/2018 15:22

I was off 10 months prior to my dismissal

Lizs
I love my job. It is a very rewarding job. I work with special needs children
As I've got three kids. The job is very convenient
It's literally 5 mins from where I live
