I handed in my notice

I finish at the end of January.

Handed my notice in on Wednesday.

My boss asked me why I was leaving and I told them I had heard about another job

He asked me when I knew I’d got the job and I said the day before (Tuesday). Which is the truth.

He asked to see the email they sent.

The thing is they sent it on Tuesday at 10.01am and I replied at half ten on my phone.

No po,icy about not using phone it’s an admin job.

But I don’t want to have him be horrible to me because I answered that email.

Do I have to let him see the email they sent me? It came to my personal email address and I never looked at it on a work pc.

I don’t see why it is any of his business when you were offered the job, you are under no obligation to give any reason for handing in your notice, you certainly don’t have to prove anything about your future job to your ex employer

ATeardropExplodes · 07/01/2018 18:35

No of course you don't have to show him anything.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 07/01/2018 18:35

I've never heard of a manager asking to see an email like that. What was his reason?

RaeSkywalker · 07/01/2018 18:35

Of course you don’t, all he needs to know is that you’re leaving, and when your notice period ends.

Snowysnowysnow · 07/01/2018 18:36

It's absolutely none of his business. Say no because it contains confidential information (which is presumably correct as it will say salary)

Ijustlovefood · 07/01/2018 18:36

Why does he want to see the email? Is it a job with the same company or something? It's none of his business. You don't need to show him anything.

GreenTulips · 07/01/2018 18:37

Nope - nothing to do with him at all

Your notice should be just that

'I hereby give the required X weeks notice of my intention to leave'

That's all they need

BritInUS1 · 07/01/2018 18:37

None of his business. You are leaving. End of

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:37

He asked me if I could prove it. And said he didn’t beleive that when I said they’d emailed the day before. And he said well in that case you’d have no Issue showing g me the email.

He asked again on Friday and I think he’s going to ask tomorrow.

No union. Small company and he is the son of the owner.

KadabrasSpoon · 07/01/2018 18:38

Don't show him anything. All you need to do is hand in your notice and work it. No need for reasons or proof of anything. Your boss sounds bizarre

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:39

Thanks all.

He’s rather odd. It’s a very small family company and he’s not very easy to work for because he’s there as being the son of the owner not because he’s good at the job.

OP posts:
Ijustlovefood · 07/01/2018 18:39

Sounds to me like you are doing the best thing by leaving. He sounds like a tosser.

DropZoneOne · 07/01/2018 18:40

You don't have to show him anything or tell him anything. All you have to do is give appropriate notice.

Has he asked again since Wednesday?

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:43

Yeah he asked on Friday.

What should I say?

Just something like “I don’t need to show you the email. I have handed my notice in and my last day is 31 Jan “?

OP posts:
HermioneWeasley · 07/01/2018 18:43

It’s none of his business. You can give notice at any time for any reason. Just keep repeating you’re not going to share it and you’ve given your notice.

Ijustlovefood · 07/01/2018 18:43

Exactly that OP.

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:44

Thnajs everyone

DropZoneOne · 07/01/2018 18:44

Just seen your updates. Why on earth do you have to prove when the job was offered?

Is it a competitor company? Is he concerned you were told a few days before and have stealthily been saving trade secrets to pass on?

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:45

No not a competitor and lol at trade secrets. It’s teeny lovely place not some big corporate. I’m moving to a job that’s better money but not related industry at all.

OP posts:
Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:45

Local not lovely. Itsanything but lovely

MyBrilliantDisguise · 07/01/2018 18:45

What does he think has happened?

Bluedoglead · 07/01/2018 18:46

I think he thinks I knew before Christmas and didn’t tell him.

I didn’t.

OP posts:
insancerre · 07/01/2018 18:47

How odd
At my place we just accept the notice and write a letter confirming last day
Don't show him anything!
What's he going to do if you refuse? Sack you?

Snowysnowysnow · 07/01/2018 18:47

Even if you had known you would have done nothing wrong

WasDoingFine · 07/01/2018 18:48

Bizarre! Do you think he is trying to trip you up about doing personal thing's in wouk time?
