I have just resigned from my part-time job. It is not the end of my world - I'll resume full-time freelancing - but the adrenaline is draining and I feel small and inferior. PLEASE oh please be nice to me.

I'm not going to go into minute detail because (a) it's boring (b) I've already subjected quite a few of you to its boredom (c) I suspect people connected with the Employer In Question might well be MNers...but suffice it to say that presented with various options I did not feel either tenable or likely to progress my career as a journalist I WALKED OUT today.

Respect.

Are you OK? Are you very wibbly? Do you need a stiff drink (I'm thinking coffee at this time of the morning)?

Blu · 27/03/2007 11:17

Oh goodness....e mail me.
Being Nice Blu.

I've been freelancing since before I had kids: I'll just resume doing that four days a week. I've turned work down while part of the week has been occupied with this job - and DP now earns a bit more, which helps.

Was it cathartic? Was there a scene? Did you exit with dignity intact?

It sounded like the right thing to do from your post.

BellaLasagne · 27/03/2007 11:18

Bumping for you with sympathies.

It's very hard juggling work and home. I feel like giving up sometimes (which is why I'm on here being horribly distracted and not working )

Get yourself a stiff cuppa and a handfull of choccy!

DrMarthaMcMoo · 27/03/2007 11:19

Can you go freelance again? You can work in your pjs again then. It'll be fine. Fine, fine, fine

saltire · 27/03/2007 11:19

If you weren't happy with what was being offered then you did the right thing. Good luck with the freelancing

Enid · 27/03/2007 11:20

yay! good for you!

do NOT drink coffee it will make you worse

Blandmum · 27/03/2007 11:20

Good for you girl!

Sod the pedants. You can get enough pedantry on MN!

DrMarthaMcMoo · 27/03/2007 11:21

Hey...did you do a Real Life Flounce? Cool. Did you pack things in a cardboard box like in films or will you have to sneak back under cover of darkness to get the photos of the girls and your favourite mug?

Have you told dp yet?

DrMarthaMcMoo · 27/03/2007 11:21

Have you not got any decaff? Or chocolate. Chocolate would be good.

Marina · 27/03/2007 11:22

Sorry it didn't work out MI

motherinferior · 27/03/2007 11:23

DP's been telling me to walk for weeks. I did a Real Life Stomp.

It was quite cathartic. Sadly, there were only two people there to witness it.

Do you feel better now, or at least better than last week? Sometimes all you can do in a crap situation is leave, unfortunately.

I do hope it was dramatic btw, a big MN style flounce type of walkout!

DrMarthaMcMoo · 27/03/2007 11:24

Oh you said you could go freelance again in your title, sorry.

It'll be fine. Once you calm down and get your freelancing sorted I bet you'll be glad you've done it. No regrets.

SenoraPostrophe · 27/03/2007 11:24

I think you did the right thing, mi.

the downside to freelancing imo is the stress. if a proper job gives you all that stress too, then what's the point?

think you need a nice cup of tea. and some biscuits.

Issymum · 27/03/2007 11:25

Oh MI, I'm sooo sorry to hear that you had to go through this and sooo guilty that I didn't respond to your last email on this subject, despite all the excellent and supportive career advice you've given me. [Letting down friend shame icon]

From everything you've said, I think a dignified walk-out was your best strategy and an undignified, whilst a blazing exit your most cathartic one.

You are hugely and superbly employable and if you should want another job, I'm sure you will find one. There again, you may have a heap more fun free-lancing for the glossies and writing that still unwritten novel.

Frankly, they didn't deserve you.

Blackduck · 27/03/2007 11:27

MI big respect...you'll be fine, sure of it...

Issymum · 27/03/2007 11:27

Sorry, I'm getting behind this thead. I've just seen you did go for the blazing cathartic exit. Can you share with us any incisive and telling barbs you threw at the morons?

franca70 · 27/03/2007 11:28

there, I'll be nice. fancy a campari? It's nearly time for pre-lunch aperitifs

expatinscotland · 27/03/2007 11:30

VERY liberating! Well done to you.

Onwards and upwards.

AitchYouBerk · 27/03/2007 11:31

you'll be fine... there's loads of work out there. it's just a bit more hassley getting it, that's all. but you know all about that anyway. can you work freelance for your old employers?
