I have just resigned from my part-time job. It is not the end of my world - I'll resume full-time freelancing - but the adrenaline is draining and I feel small and inferior. PLEASE oh please be nice to me.

I'm not going to go into minute detail because (a) it's boring (b) I've already subjected quite a few of you to its boredom (c) I suspect people connected with the Employer In Question might well be MNers...but suffice it to say that presented with various options I did not feel either tenable or likely to progress my career as a journalist I WALKED OUT today.

I kept it brief, Issymum (mainly because in fact I was slightly worried about bursting into tears) and stuck to the script I'd rehearsed with DP about how this was the end of my probation and the EIQ hadn't got through, and a bit of whiffling later said Goodbye, picked up my bag and walked out down the stairs.

I shall return to the total rollercoaster of being told my commissioning eds that my ideas are pants

Gosh, MI! I'm afraid I had no idea that things were so grim until I saw Our Mutual Friend last night. Will email you.

Anchovy · 27/03/2007 11:59

I prescribe...oooh...a nice big drink and a cathartic gossip/slag off session surrounded by mates who have also had a few drinks, who get a bit indignant on your behalf, wave their hands round a lot and say "oh well, F* the lot of them".

Earlybird · 27/03/2007 12:22

Well done for having the courage to walk away when it clearly wasn't working for you. You deserve a lot of credit for that. Far too many of us have hung in when we should have left a negative situation.

You may feel shaky now, but you'll feel stronger in a few days, and probably will think 'why did I stay so long'?

hunkermunker · 27/03/2007 12:23

Ooooooooooh, MI!

Scary!

I did this (kind of) - it all worked out beautifully. It will for you too, I'm quite sure.

hoxtonchick · 27/03/2007 12:24

well done sweetie. xxx (what was the killer outfit).

Porpoise · 27/03/2007 12:28

Good for you, MI.
You don't 'know' me but I'm a freelance journo, too, and I can tell from your clever, funny posts that you will NEVER be short of work.

Carmenere · 27/03/2007 12:28

It must be very very difficult to go from a reasonably sucessful freelance career to being an employee again. I have never actually worked on the staff of a publication and I would hate to because I hate being told what to do. Unless they were throwing money at you, you are better off at home, pravaricating like the rest of us

doggiesayswoof · 27/03/2007 12:30

MI, I don't know the background but I'm full of admiration. I bet loads of people stick around jobs they hate because they don't have the guts to do what you did. Have some nice calming camomile tea and some expensive chocolate.

Carmenere · 27/03/2007 12:30

Oh and I second Anchovy's post. A good bitching session, lubricated by vino will make everything seem better. And fyi I have never, ever regretted giving up a job I hated and only have ever regretted that I stayed so long. you did the right thing.

NoNoNoBodyInTheTomb · 27/03/2007 12:31

Well done, woman. It will all be for the best, and they'll be crawling to you when you're rich and famous and all over their TV screens with your new book(s)

Clary · 27/03/2007 12:32

Oh MI I had a feeling from the thread title this might be you

Not heard about the problems, but if it's not working, it's time to stop.

Freelancing is the answer. Feel free to email me if you want any advice but I think you'll be fine.

lol at the real-life stomp

I don't know the details of this, but you will be fine. You're a fab writer and commissioning editors should fall at your feet and shower you with fees and gifts instead of being a bit sniffy about your ideas.

filthymindedvixen · 27/03/2007 12:47

best of luck ol' bean. Have a drink, gird your loins and don't look back

frogs · 27/03/2007 14:30

You go, girly!

I have also done the Exit With Head Held High routine, and it does feel good, if scary. New Opportunities will come your way, but enjoy the moral high ground for the moment. And the lovely weather, of course...

bakedpotato · 27/03/2007 15:57

Glad you told them where to stick their rotten job.
Make sure you pick up some of that prosecco from Lordship Lane tonight

Tinker · 27/03/2007 16:03

Well It's Too Late For Regrets

Sorry, it didn't work out.

Scootergirl · 27/03/2007 16:05

I've got a lot of friends who are journalists around the country. If you want to, you can let me know where you are or what you're specifically into and I might be able to help

Twiglett · 27/03/2007 16:06

you did the right thing

you did the right thing

the right thing you did

either this or continue to be a pissed off hacked off hack

you have survived before and you shall again

girl done good

piglit · 27/03/2007 16:08

Hope you are ok MI. For what it's worth I'm sure you've done the right thing. Besides, I think you are fab - and so does everyone else on MN.

p.s. were you escorted off the premises?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 27/03/2007 16:11

Good luck and I hope good commissions come your way.
