(Filly's Brilliant Career Installment 85-Collect The Set!)

have seen dietitic assistant post, which would be perfect atm. 15 hours which might perhaps be managable childcare wise.

BUT

right I have nothing, really, but always happy to talk it up

specific nothing:

3 years p/t care work-adults with learning disabilites. involve some administration of meds but...not much, if i am honest

um

2 weeks work experience in a genetics lab at barts when i was 16

plus
5 years at cab-legal advocacy-no thats not a goer, and other advocacy work. i dealt a lot with medical agencies but didn't work for them.

thing is, I am going to have to go and hassle my referees if I do apply (kind of want them on my side so don't want to if its utterly pointless.

opinions pleeese

every hospital has a staff bank

you apply to the bank, get interviewed the same as usual, if you have no training but they like you you would get trained

with the bank you let them know when you can work, every ward and dept tells the bank when they are in need of extra staff, and the bank then delegates the shifts to the staff who have made them selves available for work for that shift

sometimes also if you particularly like a ward and you get on well with the staff, you know the ward well they will ask for you by name to the bank and you can get regular work etc etc

it can be last minute sometimes tho, a nurse phones n sick and the bank asks you to to cover etc, but its usually a few days in advance

hth

another thing you could do to see if you would enjoy working in carework like Nursing etc....if you have a Hospice nearby you, maybe you could volunteer there...!
We have a Hospice locally and I am thinking of volunteering there, if they have me, lol...!

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:13

ok

am going to do it

sooooon

sooooon

ok

(WHY am I so nervous? I am quite happy appearing in court and telling the police off and hastling doctors for reports. Wtf is this scaring me?)

ok will print out number and put it by the phone

hospices are nice to work, i agree
i worked in a Marie Curie and got tons of experience, and really enjoyed it

gemmum · 12/02/2007 15:49

have you phoned yet filly????

I'd love to hear how you get on, i've always thought about working in the NHS but like you am unsure where i'd want to be. think you need to get your foot in the door to see how things work before you can decide whcih area to train in. Being on the 'bank' sounds ideal for getting experience. I'm in the process of applying for a p/t night receptionist job on a and e. Hope i get it as am really keen to get 'in'. My 2 are still a little young for me to be flexable enough to be on the bank i think.

Good luck anyway

Gemma

nailpolish · 12/02/2007 15:51

gemma, you cant get any more flexible than the bank!

when my 2 were very small i worked Friday nights only

you can work whatever you want

3LoveHeartsAndNoMore · 12/02/2007 15:56

Just to agree with np here...bank is the most flexible thing of all...they will call you and you can take it if you can, but under no obligation to anyone to tkae the shift if it is impossible or you don't want too, even!

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:58

have phoned

no nights or w/eds avalible for next 6 months

only w-f days

wanted idea there and then of when i could work and no childcare atm (was thinking w/ends / nights) so

ah well

need to decide if I get childcare and hope for shifts (she was VERY firm that they couldn't guarentee shifts-fair enough) or find something more permenant and then sort childcare

and am now going wobbly at thought of leaving kids. dd is the world's clingyist toddler.

what about agency work then?

better pay

nailpolish · 12/02/2007 16:03

here

preggerspoppet · 12/02/2007 16:05

don't be put off, staffing situations can change very quickly in a big hospital.
I think you should go through the motions, jump through all the hoops but be a bit cheeky and tell them childcare is no problem and that you will be happy to work whenever.

They won't want to waste their time recruiting and training you if they feel that you won't be of enough use to them, but actually, if you do go on to train at cardiff then you are likely to work the bank for the duration of your course, most students do to earn a bit more cash, even if it is one short shift a week.

phone back, be persistant, get a form and stop thinking about it. don't worry about the kids, it is likely to be a few months before you are all referenced and trained and ready to start work and by then your little one might be a bit less clingy.

nailpolish · 12/02/2007 16:06

yes i think poppet has a good point there

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 16:07

ok she said she wanted to know when I could work before I could go on the books

But they'd interview, referance etc first

ok will phone back tommorrow using a regional accent then

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/02/2007 16:07

she was talking out of her arse Filly

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 16:08

(different regional accent, i mean.

else she'll be "oh that stammering numptie from lahndahn is on the phone again.

i shall start "croeso. Dw i eisau job, os gwelwch yn dda"

or try nhs prfessional, if it is a big hospital then they will have a contract with them, give a quick call to see if they are recruiting hca's in your area.

nhs profs are basically a nursing agency set up by the nhs to combat private nursing agency's rediculous fees. it means you can work at any nhs hospital, still better money than the bank, less than private agency, although private will be used as a ast resort where the hospital has a bank and nhs p's.

hospital bank is far preferable though, nhs are a bit of a shambles, I applyed 18 months ago and have only just received my job offer!

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 16:18

dont seem to cover wales but thanks pp

actually, the work i was doing years ago (7! eeek!) does seem to be HCA work! am tbh

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 13/02/2007 13:18

well

I tried again

grr

they won't fecking send me a form unless I can do days

am grumpy

will try agencies I think.

OP posts:
preggerspoppet · 13/02/2007 13:28

is it really cheeky of me to suggest you say you will do days if you have to?

once you are on their books they will want to use you and by then you might find that more nights are available...

Fillyjonk · 13/02/2007 15:22

am going to have to do that, aren't I?

need another accent...

OP posts:
preggerspoppet · 13/02/2007 15:36

lol! why don't you try out a fake moustache? she'll never know!

Fillyjonk · 13/02/2007 15:38

yes

it would help me seem different i am sure

maybe one of those glasses with fake big noses?
