(Filly's Brilliant Career Installment 85-Collect The Set!)

have seen dietitic assistant post, which would be perfect atm. 15 hours which might perhaps be managable childcare wise.

BUT

right I have nothing, really, but always happy to talk it up

specific nothing:

3 years p/t care work-adults with learning disabilites. involve some administration of meds but...not much, if i am honest

um

2 weeks work experience in a genetics lab at barts when i was 16

plus
5 years at cab-legal advocacy-no thats not a goer, and other advocacy work. i dealt a lot with medical agencies but didn't work for them.

thing is, I am going to have to go and hassle my referees if I do apply (kind of want them on my side so don't want to if its utterly pointless.

opinions pleeese

as i said before some arent even advertised, you need to go in to the hospital and look at their vacancy boards (usually in the canteens) or go to personnel or phone them

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 14:53

Or, phone hospital switchboard ask to go through to nursing bank co-ordinator and speak about going on ther bank. they will train you in basic nursing skills and you will be able to pick and choose your hours and where you like to work. they are likely to use bank for blood sucking, I mean taking, so if you squeezed a foot in the door you could possibly get traing for it that way?

that would give you lots of varied experience for nursing and you will decide when and where to work.

but sell yourself, they need you not the other way round. there are some right dodgy people working hospital banks, you will have no problems being recruited and if you are good at it then wards will ask for you to come back, possibly a good way to get an idea of what you want to do and perhaps a bit of training too.

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 14:57

Are there usually loads and loads of applicants per place, btw?

I am assuming everyone wants to work for the NHS, surely?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/02/2007 14:57

oh and the St Johns Ambulance thingy - you would hate it

its full of do-gooders, jobsworths who've had personality bypasses

you go to horse trials and have to stand around in the pissing rain in a v embarrassing uniform and neon jacket, praying for someone to fall off their horse and break their neck just so you have something to do

preggerspoppet · 12/02/2007 14:58

no I think staff turnover is pretty vast.

nailpolish · 12/02/2007 14:59

no there are not necessarily loads of applicants

and i second the idea of applying to the nurse bank

there are so many different jobs in the nhs its unreal

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:00

pp

really

if I ask them if I can work on the bank they will take me and train me?

really?

Interesting...

they won't laugh in my face and say "oh yes, people fall for that one all the time, what do you think we are, complete numpties?"

ok is going to take me time to work up courage for phone call here...

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:01

oh god really re St Johns thing? Balls

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/02/2007 15:01

no, you couldnt train to be a nurse that way

you could work as a health care assistant or theatre technician, etc etc

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:02

no no no i don't want to train to be an actual nurse that way

but they won't expect me to have prior training to push trolleys or whatever it is they want me to do?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 12/02/2007 15:03

oh! no you could just work there as a hca with no training - they would train you (a week or 2)

the training is good

nailpolish · 12/02/2007 15:04

most hca get trained in lots of things - they are taking over nursey task like taking blood, doing blood pressures,e tc

dep on how good your hospital is

Fillyjonk · 12/02/2007 15:05

and I don't have to apply for an actual post, I can just go on this bank thing and still get trained?

(sorry if this is a daft question. I have NO idea how the NHS works and am oddly nervous about phoning-this is not like me, I'm usually happy to phone!)

OP posts:
preggerspoppet · 12/02/2007 15:07

please do it filly, I guess it depends on who you speak to, some are unfortunately overstressed/worked and can be discouraging on the phone simply because they have no time to do any thing ever, but if you get someone nice then they will work out that you will be worth taking on.

the training they give is perhaps not fantastic, it will be a case of throwing you in a the deep end and expecting you to learn on the job, but thats the best way.

3 years nursing home experience is more than enough.

you really mustn't be scared, just go for it, you are over-qualified for the hospial bank, I promise.
