Are there ANY legitimate 'work from home' opportunities?

Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

The ads always say, no initial layout, no qualifications required, hours to suit, be your own boss, etc etc.

Has anyone got one of these that is OK and genuine?

I still get the bank of bets emails, among others, and it seems like a lot of them are a fiver here and a tenner there. I'll take a closer look again. May I ask where you get your reload info?

Hi everyone. I work for Swedish ethical clothing company me&i. We aren't MLM - each Sales Consultant is self employed and there is no pyramid structure. So no pressure to recruit etc. However it is direct sales in that you sell clothing in person. Have a look at the me&i website. We are hiring at the moment (yes you do have to interview just to make sure it's for you) and there is a start up cost to rent your first clothing collection (£100) but most people make that back their first sales party. I'm happy to answer any questions 👍🏻

I have started a business from home selling gorgeous children's books - it was only £38 to join and I made that back in my first week. It is direct sales, but not a pyramid scheme - it is actually illegal to promise easy high earnings if you sign up zillions of people... I did lots of research before starting, and the draw with this was I get free books for my little one, and apart from 1 order of £100 in the 1st 3 months (I have put through 4 of those so far in as many weeks), you don't have any targets or minimums or pressures, so you can have it as a side hobby, a full time business, or walk away at any point you want to. It is with a well known publishing house so they already have a great reputation, and all my sales have been through a fb page set up for that, rather than on my own page (so family and friends who don't want to see that don't get annoyed)

I have just seen an advert today for a company that sells all safety products for children and women. It looks legit. Safe Girls or something. Does anyone know about it?

AnisQiz · 10/04/2017 14:44

Please stay away from MLM , network marketing. John Oliver did a great segment on it
Be informed on it before hearing pitches about it.

Other work from home ideas? I would look inside. If there's something you're passionate about and really good at it, you can do it and stand-out from others. I would ask myself:

  1. What am I really good at (make a list)
  2. what do people keep asking me for help with? (make a list)
  3. How can I use my unique skills/ talents/ passions to add value to others? (make a list) People pay for the value your product or service brings to their lives. Hope this helps
AnisQiz · 10/04/2017 14:52

By the way: MLM model is this:

  1. You have to make small investment to get started (usually involved buying their stock/ products)
  2. You have to sell that stock to make some of your money back
  3. To make more money, you have to buy more of their stock from them and sell it to others people.
  4. To make more money, you have to buy more of their stock and sell it to others.

So the MLM company makes money off you buying their stock/ supplies. And you have to make your money back + profit by selling to others.

SO anyone who says it's not Multi-level-Marketing, MLM, or networking marketing...now you know what it is. Please watch the John Oliver video - he's done a great investigative piece.

Total bollocks. Just the sort of shite MLM bots love to spout.

If you work at Tesco you get a salary. You are paid at least minimum wage. You can join a pension. You get trained. You get paid holiday. Sick pay. Maternity pay. You know in advance what your hours will be. You get staff discount. You get your uniform supplied. Your salary does not depend on recruiting other people to work at Tesco, or encouraging other people to buy Tesco products. You are not expected to buy overpriced Tesco products and flog them to friends and family to make your money.

I know a number of ladies who have direct selling businesses and are earning a pretty penny whilst having an absolute blast!

No. No you don't. Unless your friends are part of inner MLM circle and living in Utah. Telling someone that you're earning money and having a blash doesn't make it true.
