Are there ANY legitimate 'work from home' opportunities?

Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

The ads always say, no initial layout, no qualifications required, hours to suit, be your own boss, etc etc.

Has anyone got one of these that is OK and genuine?

Everyone is untitled to their opinion but I would have to disagree. I used to be sinacal about these but having earned £500 profit a month for a number of month now and have loads of freebies to pamper myself I am happy sharing the positives

I know a number of artists using face books groups and pages as well as etsy and not on the high street .. Good luck

i have 4 children and needed something to fit in around family routines. A friend told me to start a beauty salon at home as you can choose your hours and manage appointments easily around my kids.
I had no experience and I didn't know where to start so found a nice "How to" book on kindle....
"How to Create A Home Beauty Salon".
This gave me my route and off i set.
Initially i just wanted to make enough to pay for the food... however i soon found myself surpassing that goal.
Best choice i made.

I've found a telemarketing job on this page actually. It pays really well and was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was a teacher until recently so I have work as an examiner and have also just secured an online tutoring job (GCSE).

I'm actually starting a PT NHS job soon which is much lower paid than teaching but will enable me to train, and within a couple of years I'll be able to get into hearing aid tech on a freelance basis alongside my employed work.

Very glad that circumstances conspired to make me quit my FT job.

so excited for the european championships and I hate football haha. so much more money to be made on mb when theres a big event on the football. My husband thinks ive gone mad.

Ive also created myself a new website for my jewellery this month. obviously its earning no money yet but I enjoyed making it and hopefully at some point it will earn back its investment.

I've recently got involved with a network marketing company, it's all very new to me but I have many friends making great money from businesses that use this method, and been able to give up their regular jobs to be at home with the children.

There is sometimes some negativity surrounding it, often from people who don't fully take the time ti understand how it works, and it's not for everybody but it is great if you want really low start up costs and no risk.

Where's the emoticon for rolling on the floor laughing when you need it? People understand PERFECTLY how multi-level marketing works, and that's why so many of us are against it. It's not for everybody, because a tiny minority will make good money. No risk - at the very least you risk losing the money you have to pay to join. You also run the very real risk of pissing off absolutely everyone you know by gushing about your "amazing opportunity" at every meeting and trying to sell them nail wraps / mascara / aloe bloody vera.

STEER CLEAR.

NigellaEllaElla · 03/06/2016 17:38

And that's your opinion but not based entirely on fact, and ultimately no one forces anyone to get involved.

I personally hate the statuses some people involved with network marketing insist on putting on FB about how amazing their life is and how lucky they are, does my head in. I don't and won't be doing that. So don't tar us all with the same brush and make your sweeping statements.

I have many friends making a great living from it and doing no harm to anyone or forcing anyone to purchase or join. Which is why I don't see the huge issue some people have with it. Each to their own and all that as long as it's not hurting anyone.

I'm in the US in an area where its very common for both parents to work. I know a couple of parents with proper jobs who work from home. In every case they have been with their employer for multiple years and transitioned into a work from home role while their DC are young.

What is more common is a FT job where you work from home 3x per week. I'm going back to do this because it will save me 6 hours of commuting.

EssexMummy1234 · 27/06/2016 22:50

Sadly working from home here is pretty hard to come by.

Neal's Yard products are great but based around party plan.

Phillipa1980
I would be interested to learn more about matched betting if you would like to message me please?

TheMortificadosDragon · 30/11/2016 18:33

I work from home, have done for over 20 of the 30 years I've worked for my company. I write scientific software and they wanted to keep me when DH changed his job and therefore location. I've been part time since DD started school. Its not the sort of job anyone can just go out and get, but for younger people thinking ahead to how they might want to get a decent work-life balance, considering whether a career lends itself to telecommuting or not (and whether that would suit you) is sensible.

Kat1924 · 30/11/2016 19:17

Are there many of you who work for Juice Plus?
I have been following different friends and family who started using the products and then some of them joined the company as well. But I have been impressed at the results from my cousins psoriasis being dramatically reduced, another friend coming off her medication for IBS and lots of weight loss successes.

I suffer from depression and high blood pressure and low immune system (currently under investigation with a specialist at the hospital) but I had a chat with the specialist asking will it do me any harm to try some of the juice plus range. Her advice was that we all lack the recommended amount of vegetables and fruit in our diet which can cause all sorts of problems.
So I weighed up the cost of the amount of fruit and veg I buy (to which a lot of it gets thrown out as it goes over before I get to use it all) and compared it with the items I want to try from juice plus and it doesn't work out any more expensive plus I will get the free chewies for the kids (I think).
I haven't brought anything yet but I am planning on doing so and just wondered if anyone else has had positive results for various conditions?
Please no nasty comments about network marketing as that is not what this post is about, I'm just trying to gather more information on the products :-)
Looking forward to receiving some positive replies but happy to hear anyone who has tried the products for more then 3mths and felt they haven't had a result?

Hoppinggreen · 02/12/2016 19:16

Well you asked for no nasty comments nd got no comments at all so that should tell you something!!

austenozzy · 02/12/2016 19:27

Phillippa, I did some mb a few months back, made a few hundred quid in a couple of weeks but lost the momentum with a holiday, work changes etc (I'm a web developer working from home). Once the signup bonus bets are all done, how profitable do you find the reloads etc? Have you had any issues getting money out of bookies? And have you bothered with casino offers? Fancy getting back into it but need to convince myself it's sustainable! Cheers.

phillipa1980 · 02/12/2016 19:34

The reload offers are more profitable than the sign up offers. I've done a few casino ones but I stick to the risk free ones. I never risk my money. Never had any problems getting money out. They only withhold money if you break their t&c's. nothing about mb does that so you are fine.
