I work 40hours a week and earn £11,000. This has gone up from £10,000 since I made a complaint to the shop owner about my salary.

I have reported her to the directgov email address I found (as have local businesses), nothing has come of this. I raised a grievance with my manager, on ACAS advice, and again nothing has happened. There are only 4 employees in the business, two cash in hand Saturday staff.

I don't know what else to do, I adore my actual job and sadly am looking for other things but after a year there its frustrating knowing how much I've missed out on. I would have left sooner but jobs seem to be thin on the ground here.

My mum has suggested emailing my MP. Does anyone have any advice? I know the owner will sack me if I keep going on at her.

Hi all. Spent 45mins on hold to HMRC then had to get to work so will try again tomorrow as im off. I tried to have a chat with the owner today again, she was very confrontational though. I asked my hourly rate and she said "you have an annual salary not an hourly rate, confirmmed with her that breaks are paid (she told me how lucky I am) etc. I asked about my contract and she has said she'll sort it, I stressed I "needed" it for tax credits etc, asked again about nmw and April's living wage, she told me to stop going on about it and be thankful I have a job, that she put my pay up a bit and surely wtc make it a decent amount.

So I'm going to put everything in writing now and go back to ACAS, I feel I've truly tried to sort this in a nice way.

Cheeky cow!
She is breaking the law because she thinks WTC will make up your wages
She owes you an awful lot of backpay

Wow! How stressful for you to be worrying about this, as well as working another job. Good luck getting it sorted.

Time to get tough OP. ! I would be direct and tell this employer that you want your illegally withheld pay. (Roughly £44 per week based on this years Minimum wage - how long have you worked there ?) or you will be making a small claim for the money AND informing HMRC. Go get yourself a job in a supermarket in the meantime, until something more interesting comes up.

I hate shoddy employers. I do hope you get this sorted out OP. You could still join USDAW. I used to be a rep and believe you can join online. Their website is full of information that you might find useful as well. As your minimum wage issue is ongoing, they may still be able to help so definitely worth giving them a call.

Ok.

The job market is about to bounce as people who have been hanging on for their Xmas bonuses, or simply making a NY resolutions to change jobs start moving around. You've got to get out of this grief hole.

HMRC are notorious for having terrible wait times (lots of cuts in staff from what I can gather) but don't give up.

Thank you all, I'm going to write the owner a letter, what's the best way to word it?
