I used to be a glamour model and then settled down and became a nanny.

My friend is a pathologist, who got fed up with it, and is currently in the Middle East working as a hostess.

A girl who was on my PSychology degree course ended up delivering my baby. I was in that much pain I could not ask her how she ended up being a midwife.I really regret not chatting to her but I was in agony and probably would not have been able to take in what she was saying.

hyperspacebug · 02/02/2015 12:15

I heard of a lot about 'traditional' careers (need years of degree and training) going into 'simpler' or self-employed jobs (not as much time needed to train for).

(more common with mums)

  • Like IT engineer becoming self-taught family and newborn photographer
  • media consultant with some cordon bleu training done in spare time who now runs luxury chocolate business
  • 15 years project manager -> turned La Leche leader and IBLC certified breastfeeding consultant on top of freelance translation work

(men I know)

  • one going from completing medical degree and a few years beyond Senior Housing Officer to becoming a pastor
  • also a laywer in the City to become a pastor in small village
  • long-term unemployed (7 years on incapacity benefit in his 20s) turned into City banker after completing PhD in financial maths (his degree was social sciences, he's super brainy though)
  • professional show horse jumper turned into uni disability officer after breaking both his legs in accident
BreakingDad77 · 02/02/2015 13:22

At work we have had quite a few engineers and consultants become vicars/clergy or teachers.

MadeInChorley · 02/02/2015 13:30

I know a Montessori nursery teacher turned City lawyer. She would use her amazing toddler tantrum management techniques on stroppy clients. I watched in awe.
