My job is OK.

I work freelance for my old company and the job I had there, I LOVED. Now that I work freelance, I only do a very small proportion of what I used to do and it gets very tedious so the work itself is not that exciting.

However, I LOVE the situation I have which is that I'm at home with the boys, can do school runs and after school activities blah blah and still work and earn decent money at the same time. I know I'm in an incredibly lucky situation.

It's just the actual work that is OK, rather than GREAT.

chocolatemummy · 03/09/2006 12:17

I have had a few jobs and loved some, absolutely hated others.
I have worked mainly in social work and special needs eductaion for the last 10 years but since I had dd it has been extremely difficult to find a job that works along side having a toddler at home and no family support etc.
Just got made redundant and I am sure that the above had an influence but thing is I LOVED that job.
One thing that I have learned though is that I need a job that is stimulating and unpredictable but not management because I hated being in authority of loads of bitchy women.

bran · 03/09/2006 12:22

MI, I have my resignation letter all written and waiting for you to say the word.

MarsLady · 03/09/2006 12:37

I'm a doula.

Love love love my work. I get to meet lots of different people... from the downright neurotic to the super casual and laid back.

I attend births and help people settle into life with a new wee one (or two).

Who could not love dispensing advice all day? I love the thrill of each new birth (excellent contraceptive I must say). The hours fit around the family... except the births... haven't yet found out how to make the mums give birth to order but working on it!

Never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I do. Oh and added bonus... coming on MN counts as research

Smurfgirl · 03/09/2006 12:52

Its not a job as such, I am a student nurse. I get such a buzz from being on placement so I hope that when I qualify it remains that good. Best decision I ever made was to become a student nurse, its challenging and so satisfying. Fab.

ja9 · 03/09/2006 13:03

love love my job

i'm a primary teacher. love the kids and their individuality. love to see them stretch themselves and be proud of what they achieve.

love to be the boss of my own little empire (classroom!)

love to make the children feel valued and appreciated

love that you get a fresh start every year with a new bunch

MoreTeaAnyone · 03/09/2006 13:31

I love my job. I too am a teacher and even though the bad days can be really bad, when you get a good day they're fantastic.

Kids are great. My only wish would be that more parents given us the benefit of the doubt and understand that most teachers really care about the kids they teach. We're not out to look big or smug, we just want the best for all of them, the naughty ones included.

TitianRed · 03/09/2006 13:49

MoreTea - you took the words right out of my mouth! Good luck to all teachers going back to work this week (and to all those whose terms have already started!)

hoolagirl · 03/09/2006 15:12

I think i've got a good deal in my job.
I now work from home processing new claims when they come in via a computer linked to the office.
Some days i've only got about 1hours work to do, needless to say my housework is always done.
Do miss the company of my colleagues though, but its definetly easier than hours of commuting and i can even start work in my pj's if i wish!

WideWebWitch · 03/09/2006 15:29

My ideal job would be as a hotel reviewer, 5 star only, worldwide, so including those looking out onto the ocean. And being forced to review those with childrens facilities as well as those without, obviously. First class travel would be included and obv I would be extremely well paid for it and would have to take dh most of the time.

Flossam · 03/09/2006 15:32

I enjoy my job. I find it fulfilling, challenging and rewarding. However I also find it tiring, emotionally draining and working full time is too much for me. I plan to reduce my hours soon though so hope my work life balance will be a little more restored.

drosophila · 05/09/2006 13:14

I am surprised to see so many teacher who love r their job. I have a brother a Head and a sister a primary school treacher and they make me think that teaching makes you very weary. Have to say I find it uplifting that so many of you do love your job - gives me hope.....

Hope you continue to enjoy nursing. I have been doing mental health nursing for three years and am now fed up with it! Want to be an estate agent!!

gegs73 · 12/09/2006 14:26

I hate my job in the IT industry but the hours are spot on which is why I stay. They have relocated all my team to central London apart from me and though the company is huge, its so huge that people don't really interact between teams so I am sat pretty much on my lonesome all day. At least when ds goes to school it will be easier for me to get something with more regular part-time hours.

littlelamb · 13/09/2006 19:44

LOVE my job! I only started on Monday, so no doubt the novelty will wear off, but I am working in a small independant letting agents and loving every minute of it. Great team of people, good hours and I am so much better off now I am not on income support as I was over the summer. The only downside is that I don't see as much of dd as I would like, although she loves being at nursery all day, and also that I am just so tired when I get home. I think upping my caffine intake at work might sort that out though

Squirrel3 · 19/09/2006 09:58

I hate my job, I've not been working there long and the woman who is 'showing me the ropes' took an instant dislike to me, don't know why.

She always checks my work, sighing as she picks it up and she will try as hard as she can to find fault with it (I can hear that 'sigh' as I type).

She 'blanks' me if I ask a question, then does her utmost to make me feel small if I get it wrong.

Been of sick for two weeks (I suppose I was well enough to go in but I just couldn't face it) got to go back tomorrow and I am already starting to get that horrible sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Looking for another job, I have got to get out of there.

Jaffacake1 · 19/09/2006 10:03

Hoola girl, I want a job like yours! Working from home sounds so perfect.

I am on mat. leave for a year, we are so lucky we can afford it, but I have to go back part time next may, I work in a jewellery shop, it is fab celebrating all the weddings, engagements etc(there really are a lot of romantic men out there) but it is very tiring, and if at all possible I would adore to be a fulltime mum for ever.

Jaffacake1 · 19/09/2006 10:05

noone should have to feel like that about work.
can't you discuss how you feel with your boss? dont they have monthly 1-2-1s?

if you keep a diary of what this cow says/does, you could have a claim for constructive dismissal

moondog · 19/09/2006 10:12

I love my job.
I'm a SALT with people with profound and multiple learning difficulties.
It's great, sociable, flexible (I've just taken three years off and will go back to old job)interesting and the pay is good.

The downside is that there aren't enough of us,so we are all overworked and unable to spend the time and energy on our service useres that we would like to.

NHS targets and directives and paperwork are howeverlike weeds, choking everything we do (it would be surprisingly easy to do no therapy at all)

Am also horribly aware that the peopel we work with have nowhere near the level of care and service they should have (although it's getting better.
Scandalised too that most staff in special schools have little/no specialist training and as a result, can't really do their job.

Squirrel3 · 19/09/2006 10:15

The boss thinks the sun shines out of her Jaffacake.

No, we don't have 1-2-1's there, I think I have an appraisal when I have been there three months, I think I probably will have left before then.

Wish me luck in my job hunting.

Wordsmith · 19/09/2006 10:23

Started a new job yesterday! I'd what I was doing before (PR) except it's employed and not freelance. Plus it's part time and the boss is keen on flexible working. There are about 6 of us in the office but most work flexible hours - and we're all women. I know I will enjoy getting regular money at the end of the month and not having to worry about how big my tax bill is going to be every January. Plus the flexible hours give me most of the benefits of freelancing anyway, and I still see just enough of my kids. Plus it's at a lower level of responsibility than I had in my previous employed job, 8 years ago, so it doesn't constantly worry me and most of the pressure is someone else's. Plus I can still fit in the odd bit of freelancing in my spare time, so my income should improve. So yes, at the moment, I love my job.

lucykate · 19/09/2006 10:31

i worked for 11 years as a needlecraft designer for Coats/Anchor designing cross stitch, tapestry, embroidery and craft kits.

the things i loved about it - we all had a laugh working together in the design studio, i got paid to sit and play with fabric and thread, built up a fantastic portfolio of work whilst there, also had quite alot of designs featured in stitching magazines, worked with other designers many of who are quite well known in the field

the things i hated about it - my boss, he was a pig. he was downright nasty to me when i returned after maternity leave, promoted a colleague whilst i was off without telling me hen really we both should have been considered for the position. then when she went on maternity leave, he asked me to cover for her, which i agreed to do but then someone else went on maternity leave too and he asked me to cover for them aswell. i did it as it allowed me to build up a relationship with the editors of all the stitching magazines and by this point i had decided i wanted to go freelance and these contacts would be a great help in the future. he also made an awful comment to me in a meeting just after my second miscarriage, not going to repeat it as it makes my blood boil

i left in may as we moved to another part of the country with dh's job. once house is straighter and ds has started nursery will start designing again and be my own boss this time

edie123 · 21/09/2006 10:02

Hi everyone, hope you all good

I have told my boss that I want to go from 37.5hrs a week to 30. Bit worried about the money-has anyone else cut their hours?

giggly · 25/09/2006 20:30

hi edie
I dropped from 35 to 21 hours resulted in a pay drop of £6oo plus £240 for childcare,( monthly of course) have had a hard time adjusting, dh gets a wee bit more than me for full time. we now have to save for holidays etc, but we bank alldd monies which pays for one holiday a year , well thats the plan. I do get a bit down not being able to spend what I like, but the reality is that we dont rreally go anywhere exciting anymore, not much call for good clothes at m & t. Its all worth it to have more time with dd and only have to see c**p boss 3 times a week, if it were more I'd be in jail.

Northerner · 25/09/2006 20:40

I pretty much love my job.

I work for an event management company 3 days a week. I have always worked in the conference/hotel industry so kind of know it inside out. Every day is different, I might be booking flights for 300 delegates, searching for a overseas venue, booking a dine a round for 3000 people (like this week)or sending proposals.

I love my boss and he is very flexible, I work 3 days a week .
