and why??????

sorkycake · 01/09/2006 22:15

I'm an OT 1 day a week and I love my job, despite it being in the NHS. I'm a sahm for the other 6 days and can honestly say I have the elusive home/work balance.

nooka · 01/09/2006 22:20

I would have said that I really enjoy my job, but the past few months have been really depressing. I work for a PCT, which on the whole has been a pretty positive place, trying to do a good job in a very deprived area, and doing a fairly good job with some quite innovative schemes. Great people (mostly), good sense of commitment, and nice to be part of something that I believe in. But the last few months have been really crap, we have had huge chunks of our budgets removed, the government is imposing more and more targets and stupid schemes on us, and I have the prospect of having to make redundancies in my team, whilst not being sure what the long term future is. Yuk yuk yuk. Makes me want to go and join one of the many consultancy firms who seem to be swarming all over us on huge fat contracts.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:22

most of the time, it sucks. it's dead end, boring and the pay is crap.

themoon66 · 01/09/2006 22:41

I love my job most of the time. The hours are great - 8.30am to 2.30pm. The others in the office are good laugh (suspect at least two of them are MN-ers). My boss (Consultant Psychiatrist) is even tempered and lovely man who has kids the same age as mine so we swap horrific teenager stories. I get to MN at every available moment. The patients are great and I bend the rules as often as I can for them as a form of rebellion against NHS stupid policies and government interference.

UselessMum · 01/09/2006 22:58

the only bad thing about my job is that I cannot access MN. Last year they've fired a lot of people for doing fk all and surfing the net all day. so now no more internet except during lunchbreak sort of thing.
maybe it is better though, I would do f
k all myself tbh. like I did tonight. my DH will divorce me if he wasn't busy watching a crappy action movie

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 23:01

my job cares not if i mn all day. so i do.

jabberwocky · 01/09/2006 23:41

hiya, froot. chipmonkey is an optom too! I have not used theoptom.com forum. Maybe this weekend I'll get a chance to check it out. Thanks for letting me know.

theunknownrebelbang · 01/09/2006 23:52

I like my job most of the time. I work with a great group of people in the main, and we laugh lots even though it can be really stressful.

My boss is great and he allows me lots of flexibility if I need it, which with three children and DH's daft shifts is more important than anything else.

A decent pay-rise would be good though, lol, and perhaps a few less hours (currently do 25 hrs pw).

hunkermunker · 01/09/2006 23:58

I love my job. My colleagues are brilliant (mostly...!), the work is usually interesting and I get a great feeling of satisfaction sending a file to transmission and knowing it'll help somebody enjoy the prog.

drosophila · 02/09/2006 11:58

Now I'm getting worried most people either like or love their job There are a couple of exceptions. Hmmmm will have to really do something about my situation. I think I have always assumed that most people hate their their job or think it is OK. I am really surprised to see so many positive posts....

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 02/09/2006 14:21

I'm looking for a new job atm but wrt current job

Upsides:
The pay's ok
I have a certain amount of autonomy
I'm good at it
I like my team
Casual environment

Downsides:
I have no respect for current manager and his boss (which is my reason for leaving)
The hours are long atm and have been for 3 months
Not much challenge left, I've done what I came to do

motherinferior · 02/09/2006 14:36

I'm a journalist. When it's going well, I bloody love it. When it isn't, I grumble but still would rather do this than anything else including childcare. Obviously I'd prefer ideally to be reclining on a couch reading a novel and being spoonfed cake by attentive and gorgeous young men, but sadly nobody has offered me the opportunity to do that, even without the pay issue.

Tinker · 02/09/2006 14:47

Mine's ok to like. The downsides of moving are too horrible to contemplate though. Get a transfer up north dros

Tinker · 02/09/2006 14:49

I suspect I would feel like that about any job though. It's the concept of a "job" I have a problem with

FeelingOld · 02/09/2006 15:37

Love my job, I am a childminder, where else would I get to play all day and get paid for it. Used to be an office manager but got sick of juggling childcare for my own kids.
Hate the paperwork/ofsted side of it though.

laneydaye · 02/09/2006 15:39

absoloutley love love love my job im a singer and work with another girl in a duo, we do pubs clubs and other types of function..... the money is good and i get a break from home life just for a few hours...xxx

bran · 02/09/2006 15:45

MI, if you do find that job would you employ me as your assistant? I could sit on a footstool at the foot end of your sofa, be your food-tester, keep the young men in line and read the same books so that you could discuss them without the bother of joing a book group.

Blandmum · 02/09/2006 16:08

I love my job, I am a secondary school teacher.

I have done lots of other jobs, but this is one of the most intelectualy stimulating.

The kids are (98%) great and great fun to work with.

You can gave a real laugh with the kids and the staff.

nothing beats the feeling of seeing real understanding in a kids eyes

loads of holidays

The perfect job for a show off!

drosophila · 02/09/2006 20:44

Tinker, you have probably guessed I am going through a culture shock since the merger. My old dept is seriously under represented where I am and I never thought I would say this but our old Dept was dynamic in comparison to some things I see. I hope to move on.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 02/09/2006 20:45

MI, you'll need more than one assistant, I think. I'd like to offer myself as Bran's holiday cover

LaDiDaDi · 02/09/2006 20:54

I love my job because it is busy, sociable, varied, rewarding, can be adrenaline-pumping exciting and is worthwhile. I feel valued and respected at work.

dinny · 02/09/2006 20:57

Used to love my job, now I tolerate it Has become much more drudge-like of late, less exciting and challenging.

TrinaJ · 03/09/2006 11:25

I work part time as a nursery nurse, which I do enjoy but not as much as I could, I find it a drag when the kids have been horrible then I come home and take it all out on my own 2 .
On the other hand, I also sell usborne books at home and LOVE it.
I've been doing it nearly a year and enjoy it more with every month that passes.
Will one day hopefully take over from working part time.

motherinferior · 03/09/2006 11:59

You're right, you two; my initial proposal is far too stressful. I shall need Help, and skilled help of the kind I'm sure you can supply.

hunkermunker · 03/09/2006 12:04

Glad to hear it, MI.
