If you earn 100k plus, what is your occupation?

I've posted this here as it is a bit U, but i am curious to know what jobs pay mega bucks.

I've just been looking on a jobs website at admin jobs, most are paying on average 20-25k (in London). With the cost of living as it it, that sort of money will not go far at all.

I've been a SAHM for a while now and have begun looking for work. I'm considering retraining, but only in something that pays well!

So members of the 100k club please spill the beans and let me know your secrets!

BIL is a website developer, now part owns own business in NY USA. he earns equ £150k, as does his wife. He has no qualifications, just bloody good IT nerd who got a lucky break. His wife is super clever. they both work vvvvv long hours inc weekends and until recently had a nanny for their children 24/7. Now they are in positions where they are more in control of their working hours/can work at night they are able to spend more time with their children. they sacrificed their children for first few years, but now have much more time with them.

'many IT contractors who work a bog standard 9-5, short commute, 6-12 month rolling contracts, and are pulling in £500-£800/day'

I don't buy this for "most", nor "all the time"

IT contracting is far better paid in financial services than anywhere else, but the hours are not typically 9 -5 unless you have a rare very in demand specialism.

Outside of that I think this is not an easy-to-sustain position.

And the issue is not per diem, it is utlisation, ie no. of days you get paid in a year.

Whatmeworry · 04/01/2012 22:10

Sorry, not "most" - "many". I think "a few" is more like it.

busybusybust · 04/01/2012 22:11

One of my son's best friends since school is earning 500k+ pa. Banking.

Aged 25!!!!!

But he was the brightest kid in the year at school - and he did get a first from Cambridge.

Funny thing is though - he just doesn't spend it!!!!

spiderslegs · 04/01/2012 22:16

Righto - it's been said before but DH is all-knowing uber geek, earns double & North of 100k.

What's more intersting though is;

a) Why Xenia always pops up but never reveals

b) Why there are many more women on here telling us what their DH's earn than telling is what they earn.

FWIW, I trained as an actuary, lasted about a year before my brain nearly atrophied, more power to those who stuck it out, I guess I was never destined to be a high earner - I prefer to make food (incidentally I made the best fish pie ever tonight) - we all have our talents, it's a big old world out there .

spiderslegs · 04/01/2012 22:18

Oh & what Whatme said regarding IT contractors.

scottishmummy · 04/01/2012 22:19

there are worse braggers on mn than Xenia
many many more
the I is so riiiiiich, cue description of fragrant life
the I attended Russell group uni
the embellished descriptions of charmed life
in fact it all comes down to them crowing people should be more like them to get on

otchayaniye · 04/01/2012 22:27

journalist

TheRealTillyMinto · 04/01/2012 22:31

i find it odd that taking about your DH positively is seen as ok (or at least not criticized) but talking about yourself in the same way generates criticism.

scottishmummy · 04/01/2012 22:37

yes people write fragrant I shop, walk dogs,do hee haw, as dp is work slave whilst sahm and.....generally passes without comment.other than Envy wish that was me comments etc

yet someone posts, yep am comfortable, earn well...and it's oi hark at you

oldteacher · 04/01/2012 22:38

After reading this thread I have realised that I have also earnt £100k.

It just took me 7 years to get there Grin

farandflyaway · 04/01/2012 22:39

b) Why there are many more women on here telling us what their DH's earn than telling is what they earn.

I didn't want to say it but I found that quite depressing, too. For some reason, I can't imagine the reverse (a bunch of men discussing what careers their household covers, and them chatting away about what their wife does, rather than what they do/have done/will do).

I think it's because having a male parent who takes on the part-time/less stressful career in a duel-income household still isn't the norm in many circles, plus there isn't the whole history of having a career wife to contend with (or, in this case, career husband).

noddyholder · 04/01/2012 22:42

This thread is beyond vulgar

eurochick · 04/01/2012 22:44

Good point, spiders. I noticed that too. I bet if men were answering, they would all be bragging about what they earn and they wouldn't be eager to mention what their wives earn.

scottishmummy · 04/01/2012 22:44

no different from the uni attended brag, the how fragrant life allegedly is
always worth a snigger
vulgar...hell yes deliciously so
but some folk need to brag, and brag they do

LittleGnu · 04/01/2012 22:49

Vulgar sums it up. But if money's your God, you have my sympathy. I personally don't think the great disparity between haves and have-nots will continue for much longer anyway. Wink

lechatnoir · 04/01/2012 22:49

I know an estate agent in central London that topped £100k last year. Absolutely no qualifications required Grin

TheRealTillyMinto · 04/01/2012 22:50

women seem to be allowed (by other women) to say there are more important things than money, but not 'i like earning loads of money & its great'.

personally i like to hear about women owning islands. it is a bit more interesting than some AIBU......

baubleybobbityhat · 04/01/2012 22:53

The trouble with nearly all of these £100,000+ jobs is that they sound so grindingly dull.

scottishmummy · 04/01/2012 22:53

I don't tire of hearing how money earned, not married
the married aspect, well you see that's a description of him not you

baubleybobbityhat · 04/01/2012 22:54

I do agree sm that it is odd so many people have spoken about what their partners earn in the context of this thread.

suburbophobe · 04/01/2012 22:55

HR director for a charity

This is why I've stopped giving to charities...

(Do my "giving" in a different way on a more personal level).

sleepdodger · 04/01/2012 23:00

I'm not in the 100k club though could be in near ish future if I sell a kidney continue to work endless hours and resilience to match
I'm a young creative & have done well ish
BUT
I look around my peers and there is a huge void of the next aged/ experienced people due to burn out
Most say multiple kids plus the pressure is too much
So I would think v v v carefully about the time in you can give before you zoom into the golden open doors....Wink
Good luck!
