Inspired by another thread, let's have a general chat thread for those looking for a job.

Me? I've got 2 DS, 1.1 and 3.2, and for my last job, my fixed term contract ran out whilst on maternity so I'm looking for that elusive part time job that would ideally be school hours, termtime, interesting, challenging, and paid well. I'm also looking for a moon on a stick.

Hi Heckle have you heard anything yet?

I had the second interview on Thursday and I GOT THE JOB !!!!! Grin Grin Grin

Which is great but they want me to start in 2 weeks so am now going to have to find a nanny in the next week - so excited but now a bit panicky

hecklephone · 03/09/2011 21:42

Congratulations lookingforwork - now you'll have to change your name Grin Wink

Well done, and good luck with the nanny hunt!

I'm stiiiiiilll waiting - eeeekkk!!

hecklephone · 06/09/2011 14:58

Ok, still no word after my interview. I know they were off for a week, then doing more interviews last week but I really thought I might know one way or another by now. Do I email to ask when we can expect a
decision? There are 4 posts to fill so I appreciate it could take a while to decide - am I being impatient or is it reasonable to ask for a bit of a timescale??

MrsJamin · 07/09/2011 14:22

Bloody hell. Think I have just got my dream job! Don't hate me but they asked what days/times I'd like to work! Can't believe it, my sector (pretty niche), the town I live in, and flexible interesting work.

So my advice - be persistent and focused. I found the company I wanted to work for and let them know how much I wanted to work for them and how I could help them achieve the company's goals. Keep going and believe that you can get a job that you want!

Oh and well done lookingforwork - am in exactly the same position, very happy but panicky about organising quality childcare quickly!

Well done mrsjamin, I'm glad it's worked out for you. Good luck with finding childcare too.

I did not get my job. I phoned up today and the HR woman told me the letter's on it's way but I wasn't successful. Am feeling a bit shit, not primarily because I really wanted the job - it wasn't absolutely ideal - just getting rather down about the fact that I'm getting these good interviews but not managing to get the work. And my alternative options are crap. So if anyone can pass on some of that jobfinding luck, I'd be most grateful...

An0therName · 07/09/2011 21:36

that's great to have good news - I am waiting to hear back from a couple of interviews but as its been a while I am suspecting no - neither is ideal

  • however I have had a session with a friend who is helping me refocus - probably along the lines of MrsJamin which has given me lots to think about

Hello mind if I join?

I applied for my first job after 6 years of practically being a SAHM. I had an interview on Tuesday (same day that youngest DS started school!) and my stomach is in knots waiting for the phone to ring. It is a brilliant job, near home, good pay and school hours which I have a great background for but no direct experience. I was very nervous at interview so it didn't go quite the way I planned. I can't believe how emotional the whole thing has been after such a long time at home. Fingers crossed.....

lookingforwork · 08/09/2011 20:28

Hi Hecklephone, I'm sorry about your news.

Things I think helped me to get the job was lots of research about the company and the people interviewing me, Linkin is great for that. Google the company and if you can find obscure facts about it they'll appreciate what you've done.

My recruiter was great we sent in a reference before they asked for it and I sent them an email saying how well I would fit in and how much I wanted to work for the company.

Have a good look at your CV, I rewrote mine for this job. if its something you really want as opposed to any job take the time and effort to make it the best you can be.

Good luckSmile

MrsJamin · 08/09/2011 20:37

Great advice from lookingforwork, I too joined linkedin and also researched the company really thoroughly. I also tailored my CV especially for them. Also don't think that companies don't want to hear that you want part time work. If it isn't a big company you may be more attractive to them as they may not have enough work for a full time employee, this is especially true of start-ups. Believe in yourself and your own skills, they are still there behind the snotted-on clothes!

Is LinkedIn really quite useful then? I've never joined, don't know much about it, but I wondered if it would be beneficial if I end up doing more freelance work?

Which, by the way, I'm feeling a bit more at ease about. I currently do a handful of hours of publicity work for a friend, and he's offering a few more. I've also had a couple of writing/proofreading jobs offered in the past week (nepotism mostly, though!) so am quite busy at the moment.

And I've been looking on the bright side, like realising if I work freelance I can be really flexible for the kids, make coffee/toast/eat cake anytime I like, or even work in the library or a cafe. In fact, I think I'd sort of accepted this as my fate and then today in the paper - BAM - a job ad for one of the posts I'd previously applied for - a temporary full time magazine post.

What do I do now??? Apply again? Even though I didn't succeed before? Or just ignore it and get on with building up a freelance career? The lure of a regular income - even for a while - is very appealing. I really worry that I won't get enough work as a freelance, but maybe that's just fear. Gah, I've been here before...WHY can't I just decide?!? Confused

An0therName · 16/09/2011 14:24

hecklephone I would have thought for your field it was very useful - and I would imagine a lot of employers would check it

Hello,

Hoping I can join in on this thread. I am looking for a new job but am very short on time so have only applied for maybe 3 or 4 jobs so far this year and no interviews as yet, although my dad said 1 interview to 10 applications is good going. I did have a call with an agency the other day who thought I was great but they didn't have any jobs in the area at the time and also I got a call back on an internal job with similar positive feedback but were restructuring so the vacancy was removed.

Will get there in the end just need to have more patience. Hoping to hear on my latest application over the next couple of weeks, closing date isn't until Friday.

Will pop back when I have more time. Good luck everyone and well done to those who have got great jobs.

Jack x
