Inspired by another thread, let's have a general chat thread for those looking for a job.

Me? I've got 2 DS, 1.1 and 3.2, and for my last job, my fixed term contract ran out whilst on maternity so I'm looking for that elusive part time job that would ideally be school hours, termtime, interesting, challenging, and paid well. I'm also looking for a moon on a stick.

Bugger Sad

Back on the shelf. Was good experience though, v lovely people, nice environment. Didn't completely lose the plot either which helped.

2 candidates for interview from a field of 27 applicants, so I'm pretty pleased about that (and it means I do at least know I can do a good app form!), they gave it to the other lady because she had more hands on accounting experience. Funny that, given that she's 10+ years older than me Hmm

Shame she was so nice really, would have made it easier to hate her!

Thanks for the thoughts anywy folks, always appreciated Smile

Chablis, any news?

Lovethesea · 25/05/2011 16:43

Hey all, thought I'd join in as a useful procrastination from reframing my entire work life to fit the essential and desirable person specifications from my current new favourite job option.

I've DD (2 and a half) DS (11 months) and have been SAHM since maternity ended with DD. It's been over 5 years since I last applied for a job and my brain feels fried!

Have seen a fantastic PT job, and another one where I think I'd make £9 a week before travel costs. Joy.

All that work school made me do on CV skills .... no one has ever let me send a CV in, ever! I feel cheated. I always have to write a 10 page application form specific to that job alone and meet every criteria they have.

Now, where's that chocolate......

MovingAndScared · 26/05/2011 09:42

Cockadoodledoo -shame -
waiting to hear about one application - and got 2 quite good part time jobs to apply for - infact should be doing it now... and big move coming up!
Lovethesea - applications forms are a pain arn't they - you can usually adapt bits from CV through - and make sure you keep everything you write as can be useful for next time

Lovethesea · 26/05/2011 19:49

Definitely keeping a copy! This application asks for all training I've been on, fine, that's normal, but also who ran it, how long it was for and what date I did it. I've been scouring diaries I kept from work in 2006/7/8/9 to find the month and training company.

I've always listed training - I've just never had one that's asked for so many specifics on it, so any other forms on that should be far easier.

Gives me hope they are an organised bunch though wanting so much precision.

The other job I'm working on is absolutely insistant that I do not put my name on the application form AT ALL - I need to call for a candidate number and use that to help avoid discrimination. That I am fine with, good policy, only they also insist on asking me my email address on the To Be Nameless Application Form. Being your average kind of email address it is going to give them my whole name and therefore gender! Ah well.

Has anyone ever failed a telephone interview? Just applied for a cashier's role in Barclays and was gutted when I failed the telephone interview. The interviewer was so friendly, I suppose after 5 years of being out of work nerves got the better of me. Well I have gone back to their website and found that they have another role for a personal banker. Do u think I should apply for this though I was not successful for the junior role............. Really need a job, please help anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MovingAndScared · 26/05/2011 20:26

Kurza with jobs - if you have whatever the essential are then apply - for a big firm like Barclays I don't think it would matter that you hadn't been sucessful before - also depending where you are large firms are getting lots of applicants so they can be more picky than they might have been before - might be worth asking for feedback though

Kudza · 27/05/2011 12:24

Had high hopes for a job my job agency put me through, quite devastated when she rung up and say the company does not need me, in a low after my failed telephone interview yesterday...............

Kudza · 27/05/2011 12:25

Thanks MovingandScared, will try again.....wish me well, and will keep u posted

ChablisLover · 30/05/2011 10:07

hi all

had an interview on thursday for a role - but could be full time and 30 miles away.

don't know if it is what I am after.

Will find out this week.

Was one of eight candidates interviewed.

There is a role in the local council i am thinking of applying for. Would be FT but for the same money as I used to get for 3 days. but it is 5 minutes away.
Although I am hugely over qualified for it as DH points out they may not even want to see you cos you are too qualified - would have better qualifications that person to whom I would be reporting - but is 5 minutes away

Who knows what to do?

MovingAndScared · 30/05/2011 13:46

I would say local authority - I would consider saying you are looking for part time if that what you want -
and depends it how much you "have" to get a job and how many potential ones to apply for - whether you go for jobs you are not sure about
and of course the state of the jobs market in your area

andyta · 30/05/2011 22:59

Hi single dad of DD (11) for last 9 years here, not a TA anymore cutbacks saw to that, but increasingly desperate for part time work social/care work if poss. Never been so short of money before had to take a loan out last year just to get by, looking back so stupid and now the payments are making things very difficult. Want to, must, find work but then what to do with DD during the hols? Plonk her in a holiday club for 8-9 hours a day?? Any advice here would be immensely appreciated.

ChablisLover · 06/06/2011 18:10

Well I got rejected for the job I had the interview for.

However out of the blue my old boss going back 2 jobs contacted me and asked if I had anything if not he had some part time work available.

So I jumped at the chance - then had to turn down 2 more interviews. Both for part time roles in my area.

Hope it all works out.

Coolsticks · 07/06/2011 19:04

Try independent schools, they are usually more liberal on the qualifications bit! G.Luck

MovingAndScared · 08/06/2011 09:18

Got an interview one tuesday for a great job - part time and interesting and well paid - wish me luck - loads of prep to do

andyta - there are loads of threads about what to do in the holidays - but most older children do love holiday clubs and you should get some childcare costs cover I would have thought with tax credits

chablis - hope it works out but at least you have some work!

mumhasjob · 10/06/2011 22:37

would you consider working from home own business network marketing? i might have the solution!

breadandbutterfly · 15/06/2011 22:08

Hello, please join us on the self-employed section and create your own job!!!

I did that to fit in with my own hours and am now just looking to take on my first employee/s. The best way to ensure you do something you enjoy and get paid without a middleman taking their cut first.

Think on it.

MovingAndScared · 30/07/2011 10:24

Hello MrsJamin - and anyone else - not got a job yet - but have had some interviews last week - which is encouraging - got one job application to do by tuesday, and going to do some more networking and apply to agencies this week
PS note to any people offering self employment I am going to report any that post on this thread as it was getting my nerves!

MrsJamin · 01/08/2011 13:54

How's the job application coming along movingandscared? I still haven't heard back from my application... waiting by my email is so annoying! Agree with you about the people offering self employment, I've reported several!

MovingAndScared · 01/08/2011 20:01

hecklephone · 01/08/2011 23:14

Rejoining this thread! Hello all, still job-hunting here. Can't remember when I last posted but I had a pretty important interview for a FT maternity cover but didn't get it - although I did get a very encouraging rejection letter iykwim. The same company is now advertising a number of posts at a local newspaper so I'm going for those now. CV and cover letter in, closing date is Friday. I too am one of those people absolutely obsessed with checking email on my phone to see if there's any offers/job alerts popping up.

I'm also in the same boat as MrsJamin (I think) in that I'm finding PT work is either potentially soul destroying or just not on offer so I'm increasingly considering FT in the hope that it will a) vastly improve our bank balance and b) lead to a better long-term option.

So- that's where I'm at. Hopefully I'll have some progress to share soon - I'm hoping for at least an interview out of this latest application!
