We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Been rushed off my feet with two birthdays, bear cubs 3 and 4 have their birthdays two weeks apart (so do one and two, poor planning on my part!) so I've been doing parties, baking cakes, and assembling fiddly toys.

Started work on square number six today.

So so pretty, bear

Spindelina · 28/02/2018 08:13

That’s lovely, Bear. My two have ten days between their birthdays. It’s going to be a busy month!

I’ve got my peskies from joining and edgeing to sew in, but then I’ve done it! A whole blanket! Will send with squares for IWant and Niffler - hopefully I’ll get to the PO tomorrow.

Spindelina · 28/02/2018 08:14

And Kates I love your colours. What are they? Cheery on a cold day!

bookbook · 28/02/2018 08:27

Everyone is doing so well!
Lovely squares
Spin - you are a crochet machine ...
DD and I are nearly there - I am just waiting for her last square to arrive, hopefully on Sunday. As we've done enough this soon, we are going to have a go to do a second. I've done 2 squares for that so far.
I'm busy joining a Candys atm, with a refugee kit waiting too.
Rather nice in this weather , having a big heap of wool on your lap :)
Twitter - Ravelry is great as Chipping ( ) says - my favourites folder is bulging Grin

TwitterQueen1 · 28/02/2018 10:46

Here are the fruits of my labour.... I wonder if the beanie is too big? I have a very big head and this fits me.... I did this just last night - so quick!

I'm not knitting any more - crochet is so much quicker and the end product looks a lot nicer (IMHO) too.

Wow, you're all so quick. I seem to have slowed down this year.

Spin, you're amazing!

Spindelina · 28/02/2018 18:55

Nah. As a family, we’ve just finished a six- month stint of two adults not going to work, a 5yo and a Velcro baby. Crochet is the easy option!

Jux · 28/02/2018 19:08

That's hard, Spin. You have my sympathy.

K&P, what do you mean your "arse is bulging"? Grin

Spindelina · 28/02/2018 21:03

No sympathy required, Jux! It’s been a lovely chilled time. For my first mat leave, DH was still working (fine) and I was writing my thesis in my “spare time”. So we’ve done one mat leave with essentially two jobs between us (not recommended, for the record), and one with no commitments outside our family (which has been lovely). I’m still on semi-may leave (working two days and taking three days holiday each week).

Jux · 28/02/2018 21:15

Ah, that does sound lovely, Spin.

VintageTeacup · 01/03/2018 09:48

Thanks for the input lovelies. MrsHathaway I keep going back to Bella Coco and still struggle to grasp it. In had a go at starting with a circle chain and they looked a bit wonky, would starting with a very small square and then then going round it work do you think.

VintageTeacup · 01/03/2018 09:52

Gah! I really should proof read, sorry.

MrsHathaway · 01/03/2018 10:37

I'm sorry, I don't understand this Blush

The usual way to start is to chain 3 or four, then join them (like a snake swallowing its tail). That gives a solid ring you can work into - avoiding working into the loops of the chains themselves. If this is too fiddly you can start with eg ch6 or ch8 so there's a bigger ring and you can more easily see what you're doing. But then the first round needs to have more stitches in it or it will bunch up too much.

The first round is often something like ch3 tr tr, ch2, tr tr tr, ch2, tr tr tr, ch2, tr tr tr, ch and join. The "tr tr tr" parts are the solid sides and the ch2 parts are the (empty) corners. That gives you a small square to work from. If you've used a big ring to start with then you might need say 5 tr for each solid side, or "tr ch1 tr ch1 tr" which is more flexible and forgiving.

Mikey explains things very well here. A good starter video.

MrsHathaway · 01/03/2018 10:38

Er, NB he's using American terminology so "double crochet" is what we call tr.

VintageTeacup · 01/03/2018 14:06

That's what I meant but I explained it really, really badly, when i tried it, it went all sorts of wrong.
Thank you for the explanation. You've made it much clearer, I shall watch the video and have another go. One day I will grasp this crocheting lark. Thanks again for your help.

SallyDog · 01/03/2018 14:56

Vintage check out my thread in arts&crafts. I had lots and lots of help from very lovely posters and I can now do a granny square Grin.

It's called beginner crochet for woolly hug or something!

TwitterQueen1 · 01/03/2018 16:45

Sally and Vintage the link is here

Vintage Bella starts with 6 chain stitches, which makes it easier to see the 'hole in the middle' when you've joined up the chain stitches into a circle.

TwitterQueen1 · 01/03/2018 16:47

And which nincompoop didn't go out yesterday to get more wool despite knowing the snow was coming, and is now approaching the end of supplies???? Sad Withdrawal could be tricky.

VintageTeacup · 01/03/2018 18:23

Ooh thank you, I will have a look at that thread. The DCs school is shut again tomorrow so I might wait until they're back so I can concentrate.

MrsJonesAndMe · 02/03/2018 07:33

Looking to get started on 12" number 3 today.

MrsJonesAndMe · 02/03/2018 15:43

It's a start!
