Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Oh definitely K&P - this thread flows like a proper conversation between friends and there is so much help and support for anyone that needs it.

I'll be popping over to Candy after Easter. I've got a few projects of own that will keep me ticking over until the Autumn but I need the woolly company Smile

Jux · 29/03/2017 10:40

Malcolm, my mouth just dropped open at the first glimpse of your wavyness! It's amazing! so I can't see what's so bad about the way you've done the double trebles anyway

bookbook · 29/03/2017 10:49

oh Malcolm - what a shame. I have learnt through bitter experience that if I try to get something finished when too tired , it always goes pear shaped! . I was looking at Bella Coco's chevron design, and chickened out, more due to not knowing how many chains to do , so much respect!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 29/03/2017 11:54

The starting chain had to be a multiple of 14 + 3, so I started with 45, but it's still a bit rectangular, even after the row of triples down the side.

I'm going to fudge the second round of the border and do the next size stitch up from what it says, e.g. Double instead of single, and hope it evens out.

I want to do the Cosy Cottage Ripple next, so I think for that one I'll chain 59 and see if that's better.

DoubleR · 29/03/2017 12:32

Malcolm that's beautiful Smile
I'm nearly there with my 12 inch pomegranate, it's only just staying the right size so I'm glad I started it small. I seem to be much slower then everyone else. I guess I don't get much time to crochet, but also maybe the stitch I'm using ( Zig Zag puff) is slower to grow? I'm going to try a granny square and a c2c next and see if either of those are quicker.

Okkitokkiunga · 29/03/2017 13:02

All these squares are truly lovely and inspiring. I have now completed 6 6" squares, but plain ones. I have just ordered six a couple of new colours so that I can mix up a bit.

Treasures I had a close look at my granny squares last night and I think that I have a couple of wavy ones too. But I think it maybe where I put an extra stitch in in a couple of places though I tried to correct it as I went round as I didn't fancy unpicking half a square for one stitch.

Okkitokkiunga · 29/03/2017 13:03

And I also think this group is great. I was just thinking yesterday how warming it has been that you've all made everyone so welcome and all the advice you give to eachother.

NormansNipple · 29/03/2017 16:41

bookbook don't worry, my stash was well out of the way! Next time I'll put the cat somewhere safe too. You live and learn Grin

K&P I'm in awe of all the work you guys do I really am. Hope you feel better soon Flowers I'll go over to the Candy thread when it's time - I'd feel lost without Woolly Huggers to chat to now.

Does anyone have a Leonie Morgan crochet book? I was wondering if they're any good or not. I just have the Jan Eaton 200 crochet blocks at the moment. I know there are plenty of free patterns on Ravelry but they're quite often in US terms and I'm easily confused.

bookbook · 29/03/2017 17:11

I am just lurking here, as I really have to go and get making a meal....
I was thinking of your squares Treasures , and I re -read how you do your first round.
you put
Slipknot, chain 4. Two trebles into the first chain (the one next to the knot).
Is your chain 4 supposed to be the equivalent of a treble (, or does it make the circle , and you are only doing 2 trebles for the fist cluster? )

in all my instructions, you use 3 chain, 2 trebles as the first 'cluster' , and it also goes into the circle made, not into a stitch - could that be why it is skewed?

Spindelina · 29/03/2017 17:33

bbok I don't think it's that (which I don't really understand or remember) - I had the same thing following Bella Coco and the twistiness carries on well past the first few rounds.

I think it's to do with where the stitches end up - the three trebles be central on the ch1, but they end up not being so - the first one you do goes in the middle of the chain, then the next two sort of start to overlap the first treble of the next group. If you look at treasures' and my squares, the line of the bottoms of each of our groups of trebles sort of zigzags up and down, in a way that e.g. BitchyHen's (further up this page) doesn't.

bookbook · 29/03/2017 17:56

Darn it - II should have known as a knitter it would be harder than that to sort!

Spindelina · 29/03/2017 18:29

Can you tell that I do a technical job for a living? Grin

DropZoneOne · 29/03/2017 19:38

Hmm, my latest ones have gone a bit twisty. That's where I've been chaining 6 on a new round so half is the corner link and half is a treble. When I just did chain 3 and slip stitch to the middle of a corner, they were okay.
I hadn't actually noticed before, and it's more obvious on the reverse! I'm sure in the middle of a big blanket it will be fine 😀

MadisonAvenue · 29/03/2017 20:05

I've just a few more rounds to do and then I'll have finished my 7th 12". I'm aiming to have 10 12" squares in the post before the deadline, can't remember how many I sent in the last parcel. 9 I think plus a lot of 6".

Hope the lurgy sufferers are feeling much better very soon!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 29/03/2017 20:20

Coast Ripple square done!

Bad day here, haven't really been able to crochet, plus DH went looking for something in the toy cupboard and discovered the extent of my yarn stash...BlushAngryAngryAngry

TheoriginalLEM · 29/03/2017 21:02

i love that square!!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/03/2017 21:14

🌸 I hope everyone unwell is feeling better soon! 🌸

Bearfrills. I LOVE your square!

Malcolm. Uh oh. Oh well, it's still a cheap hobby really, tell him it could be worse, you could be buying Gucci handbags! 😂 Not to mention that it's a lovely thing to send other people 💐

Good news is your squares looks great! 🌸

Treasures. I actually like the Twitter stead ones I think they look (just to my. show my age >>) funky!

However, being able to do them 'straight' is probably a good skill to learn 😊 I used this TUTORIAL Give it a go as it might highlight what you are doing differently. Zooming in I can't see anything you are obviously doing wrong, maybe you're just holding it a little too tightly or something?

Norman. There are LOADS of patterns on blogs (with & without tutorials). I just google a variety of things (like granny square, 6" crochet square, crochet blanket) etc and end up with so many bookmarked it's ridiculous, but fabulous 😊

RR. I'm very slow too. I sometimes feel a bit bad when so many people are sending lots more, but I try to remember Every Square Counts and doing something, is FAR better than doing nothing, which is my only option. You can join me on the 'Slow but Steady & Made with Love' sofa 💐

DropZoneOne · 29/03/2017 21:44

Ooh Malcom, I love 💓 the wavy stripe square, tis a thing of beauty.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 29/03/2017 22:01

Thanks guys, you've cheered me up!

I'm actually really sad the Chernobyl project is coming to an end, I've loved playing around with different colours! However, I shall decamp to the Candy's Hugs thread and will also start/continue some of my own projects...!

But until the 8th, onto the next square!

MadisonAvenue · 29/03/2017 22:14

Malc that is SO good!

Flowers Sorry to see you've had a bad day, hope that tomorrow is better.

bookbook · 29/03/2017 22:37

Evening!
just putting down my hook for the night .
It has been raining today , so I managed to get a bit more done than I expected. Two completed , one half finished.
I think I can get at least one more (possibly two) out of the remaining wool , and then its in the post for Friday.
Malcolm - oh dear , hope you are okay .. that is a lovely design.
I'm hoping everyone joins Candys in truth !
Chipping - I don't think anyone cares how many, we are all pulling together here for the finish line :)

DoubleR · 29/03/2017 23:09

Thanks Chipping

I tried that granny square tutorial but I just couldn't grasp it, maybe granny squares are not for me Confused but the Bella Coco c2c tutorial was great, I've just knocked out my first c2c square Grin , slightly small though at 5.5 ( I think I was assuming it would grow like my others) but it will compensate for my slightly too big ones hopefully.

Thank you all so much for trying to help me with my wonky squares! I've tried your tips and tutorials and here are the results (pics)

Pic 1 shows the green and blue one on the right - this is how I have been crocheting normally and you can see how wonky it is - it's only going to get worse if I carry on. The one on the left next to it, I followed Mhw02's tip to miss out the 1 chain between each cluster (keeping the 2 chains at the corners). You can see from the outer edge that it's just starting to go wonky here but it does feel much tighter and firmer. After I took this picture, I carried on with the blue one, but I turned it to crochet on the other side as suggested by Spindelina's friend.

Pic 2 shows the green one sat on top of the blue one with the middle round lined up squarely on top of the other one, just so you can really see how wonky it is! The underneath square shows the outer round crocheted on the 'wrong' side and you can see that turning it has not fixed the wonkiness. I carried on anyway - I flipped it again and did another round, but it's just getting worse (Pic 3)

I have another picture but I can only attach 3 so I'll carry on in next post (sorry if this is boring anyone!)

This picture shows the one I started while watching the video tutorial Chipping posted. So this starts with a circle instead of the way I was doing it before. All going well until... how on earth do you carry on in the same colour without cutting it and starting a fresh round? I'm used to starting and finishing on a half-corner cluster and this finishes in the middle of a side and I just can't work out how to go on from here (top of square in the pic). Ideally I'd like to do 3 rounds of each colour up to 12". Until I know how to carry on in the same colour, I can't continue with this one to see if it fixes the wonky wavy problem - although yes, I do think wonky looks quite cool, if only the blimmin' edges would go straight Grin
