Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

hello,
I have 4 x 6" squares ready.
going to keep going.

Joolly2 · 02/02/2017 18:21

Can I just ask, how long does it take most of you to knit a 6" square? It takes me a whole evening. Am I seriously slow or is that about average? I am not doing a fancy pattern or anything, just knitting.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 02/02/2017 18:40

Joolly" - on average it also takes me an evening to produce a 6" square.

Some styles grown much quicker than others.

A C2C square hooks up quickly as opposed to a solid granny square which is far more time intensive.

The thing about making 6"squares is that I find it keeps me interested. I'm enjoying trying new designs. I've also treated myself to the crochet book that was recommended up thread (or was it on Candy's hugs?? - I can't quite remember!!). Anyway it arrived today and it looks fabulous.

Can't wait to finish my current 12" and start on new style 6" squares.

MrsHathaway · 02/02/2017 18:44

Is that the book that's sort of turquoise with a daisy on the front? If so, 'twas I. And I love it.

A six-inch knit takes me at least an evening. A six-inch crochet in a familiar pattern is an hour or two depending on frogging. I continue to be indignant at the speed of crochet compared with knitting.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 02/02/2017 18:58

The book is 200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton.

Can't wait to try my first one Smile.

MrsHathaway · 02/02/2017 19:10

Ah it's not the same - but I think I've had it from the library.

Happy hooking!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 02/02/2017 19:20

I can hook a 6" Granny in half an hour in one colour, with no distraction or pauses. If I'm watching telly or chatting, or using multicolours it takes an hour plus. I find C2C slower but I haven't done so many of those.

I like the sound of that book Smile

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 02/02/2017 22:11

Well here's my latest 12" square which, I'm rather proud of!!

Sorry, I don't want to sound big headed but I actually followed a written pattern and a grid chart so that's quite an achievement for me Smile.

Over the weekend my target is three 6" squares from my new book - watch this space!!

PicardsCombOver · 02/02/2017 23:00

I posted 7 or 8 squares today, only 2 12''. I feel like I've lost my crochet mojo a bit. I have 3 types of wool that are utter pwp that I'll have to donate and my crochet hook handle is knackered. Does anyone else get a bit stitchlagged sometimes?

SpiralArchitect · 03/02/2017 11:29

Fairy. That's gorgeous, and so neat!

steppemum · 03/02/2017 11:36

I knit and a 6" square takes me 2 evenings, but then I rarely sit down beofre 9 pm.

I tend to knit mine diagonally, increas one stich on every row until it is 6" and then decrease one on each row. I make a good square and is an alternative to straight.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 04/02/2017 08:41

Joolly. I'm not sure how long it takes me to knit a 6" square, but I know it takes me ages to complete a 6" square. Too much posting, too many other distractions, I rarely get a clear run of it.

Crocheting is much faster, but I can't do it prefer knitting 😉

That's lovely Fairy.

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/02/2017 09:36

K&P I'm just about 50 colour changes into my cosy stripe blanket. By my reckoning 75 changes will make a blanket a bit bigger than 48"x60". Will that be OK? I can then use the rest of the yarn - for squares for a Candy hug where the colours are right or for other projects.

Wow!!!!

I've just seen these beauties online!!!

Now, I love my crocheting and have created various bits and bobs but, for me, these are a step too far Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/02/2017 12:13

Granny pants GrinGrin

There was a time when I was about 9 or 10 and my DM was crochet obsessed that I might have been found wearing those against my will. I'm still bitter about having to wear a poncho to a wedding Angry

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 04/02/2017 15:04

Right then, I've got my new crochet book to hand and I'm giving this design a go.

I'm doing it in "Lipstick" so let's see how it goes.

Will update you all when I've finished see you all in 2020 Wink

Thank you to everyone who replied, it seems I'm about average, one a night 😃. Can I ask another question- how many squares do you get from a ball of yarn, or is that like asking how long is a piece of string. I have been doing a square in each colour to avoid boredom so although I have done 10 squares the amount of wool does not seem to be going down yet.
CHIPPING, I also suffer from distractions, coffee, MN, food. If you find a remedy please share.

Mhw02 · 04/02/2017 22:55

Takes me about an hour an a half to knit a plain 6 inch square, but I can crochet a plain square in less than 23 minutes (not that I've timed myself or anything! Grin)

I can usually get 6 or 7 plain crochet squares from a ball of stylecraft.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/02/2017 23:01

Oh crap - one of my 12"squares is bright green. Should i send that to Candy's hugsi nstead?

MrsHathaway · 04/02/2017 23:13

I get 2-3 out of 50g Sublime (etc) so I guess 5-6 out of 100g SS DK?

I swap colours a lot though so I couldn't tell you with any accuracy.

I guess I could weigh my most recent output ...?

A solid 6" granny just weighed 12g on my scales which claim to be accurate to a gram. Does that sound right?
