Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

MrsHathaway That is gorgeous! :o looks perfectly square to me and so intricate too (I deeply distrust you clever crafty gits)
Tried to sleep between 10pm and 12:25am ... decided to jump this bandwagon and make a 12" square with my lavender and meadow wool, does that count as gender neutral?? Confused

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MrsHathaway · 28/01/2017 09:50

I'd have said so - again think of it in a big combined blanket. It's absurd to think of all pinks and purples as being gendered.

DS2's star blanket is in lavender, shrimp and one of the bluer greens.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2017 10:00

MrsHathaway, I've used that stitch pattern before, i think. Is it "Jacobs Ladder"? Looks like a dogs dinner until you braid the cables at the End?

Don't do it yourself, but steam blocking will sort the squareness out. I block every square before putting them together into a Hug and it sorts out all manner of shapes and sizes! It will be fine in the end :)

MrsHathaway · 28/01/2017 10:15

Oh, I know it will be ok blocked, I'm just Hmm at it and at myself for not noticing sooner.

I hook fairly tight but chain fairly loose and can't count so part of the problem is that the pattern has lots of chains in - and instead of reducing the number to compensate as I usually do, I drank tea and watched telly and followed the pattern as written.

NormansNipple · 28/01/2017 10:50

MrsH that blog is very helpful thanks Smile and your latest square is lovely.

Most of my squares so far have pink, blue, green and shrimp in them. I'm having to take a break just now because I've got a bad cold and don't want to sneeze all over my squares.

TheFirstMrsDV · 28/01/2017 14:52

Shock at the clips!
What a great idea.
I am just putting together a blanket for my DN's 21st. I am early for a change because I want to get a move on with Woolly Hug projects.
Those clips would really help.
Gonna get me some tomorrow.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2017 17:07

Primark - £1 for 12 of assorted sizes. bargain!

Ohb0llocks · 28/01/2017 17:12

I'm going to go shopping to gather some stuff. I'm learning to crochet too and I will ask my dear grandmothers (lucky to have 2!) to also crack on with some.

Any donations of wool would be lovely as I have no idea where to start but really want to help!

TheoriginalLEM · 28/01/2017 22:11

I have some wool left over from my candy's hug squares. Kelly green.Saffron. lipstick. tomato. meadow and grass green. all pretty gender neutral - can i yse these colours? id love to help this project.

NorksAreMessy · 29/01/2017 10:13

Helloooooooooooooooooo. Novice knitter Norks here.

Having made my first ever ELEVEN six inchers for Candy Hugs, I have wandered over here for my next challenge. I am feeling BRAVE

So, stupid question coming.....if my six inch squares were 32 stitches across...a twelve inch square will be 64 stitches across, wont they? Is there any secret reason why that wouldn't be the case?

I am planning to use Candy Hug colours as well, LEM.
It looks like the 'gender neutral' thing is only if you are making a whole blanket. I am most definitely NOT doing that!

Look what you all made me do! I am a novice knitwitch Grin

SoupDragon · 29/01/2017 12:13

I don't knit but I can't think of a reason that's wouldn't be the same, give or take a stitch or two. It's is pretty much true for crochet. Perhaps the only exception would be added stretch in a bigger square.

I'm putting together a Hug at the moment and my personal preference would be to go slightly smaller - it's easy to stretch them a bit extra but you can't shrink them. The knitted ones always seem stretchier and thus bigger than their crochet counterparts.

NormansNipple · 29/01/2017 13:00

Norks a knitter put somewhere on this thread that they use 60 stitches for a 12" square if that helps.

NorksAreMessy · 29/01/2017 13:11

so they do nipple thanks
also, I see that smaller is better than bigger, so I will go for 60 and see how we go. I haven't got the hang of taking the wrong stitches off and putting the loops back on the needle yet. I did one wrong yesterday and just took EVERYTHING off and started again :(

MrsHathaway · 29/01/2017 13:13

Norks If you keep the same tension then yes it should just scale up.

I find it difficult to keep my tension the same - something about being more squashed on the needles. I am severely untalented at knitting, mind you, and tension is my downfall!

NormansNipple · 29/01/2017 20:06

I did one wrong yesterday and just took EVERYTHING off

Shock Grin

In all seriousness though Norks I'm a better knitter than crocheter so if you have any more problems I might be able to help.

NorksAreMessy · 29/01/2017 20:37

I have been miserable with sinusitis all weekend so have been sitting on my bottom knitting happily for two solid days.
Even though I am getting quicker, LP sized squares are MUCH bigger than six inchers...like four times as big

I have been thinking about Candy with every stitch. It has been a strange and peaceful and contemplative weekend

Spindelina · 30/01/2017 15:04

I've got Candy's Hugs colours too. I'm learning to crochet (because it's much quicker than making lace!); once I get up to speed I'll do some 12" squares to be split between the two.

I know what you mean - it surprises me every time Blush
