Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks

Done it! It wasn't too bad actually. And although a cold day, the sun was shining and it felt quite warm at times.

5madthings · 18/02/2013 12:38

Well done!!

I am waiting for dp to come home and then I will go out. Spent the past two hours with a PhD student from local uni as she wanted to do a study on a child of ds4's age, was quite interesting and he enjoyed it, apparently he has the vocabularly of a ten yr old (he is 4) I suspect having elder siblings helped! I was very impressed with how she managed ypo get him to engage as he cans be very stubborn!

5madthings · 18/02/2013 14:54

Rum done, 5.3km in 40 mins but had to stop for traffic lights etc which is anmoying actually and i think i look a bit odd as i jig on the spot
i walked some of it as well, but given i havent done a run for 5 days as i have had a cold i am pleased :)

BIWI · 18/02/2013 15:34

No, no 5madthings - we are doing running, not rum Grin

5madthings · 18/02/2013 15:42

Lol i would quite like some rum!! And coke.... Dp.has gone to work and wont be home till 11pm tomorrow night so i will either let ds1 babysit tomorrow night whilst i run or do an exercise dvd.

5madthings · 18/02/2013 16:06

I have opted for doritos instead of bicardi and coke and am not looking at the calorie count. My run apparently burnt 380 calories (according to my height/weight) that doesn't sound like very many!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/02/2013 16:22

Well, I ran 3 miles this morning while my parents babysat and I managed 4 miles at the weekend That's the furthest I've run since DD2 was born, and 10k seems more achievable now. I was just going to do 3 miles, but I felt so good that I just kept going Grin

It's lovely to see how many on this thread are just starting out with running, really making the effort for such a good cause. Nest of vipers my (large, but hopefully shrinking with each mile) arse Wink

5madthings · 20/02/2013 16:25

I am off out in half an hour, its cold here but once you are moving its fine, I am looking forward to it Shock

BIWI · 20/02/2013 17:06

I was just going to do 3 miles, but I felt so good that I just kept going

I am in awe of this Grin

Did my second run of week 2 today. It was good! (Knees are hurting though)

BIWI · 20/02/2013 17:08

I looked ahead to what's coming next week, and I wish I hadn't now Grin

MegBusset · 20/02/2013 17:08

I went swimming this afternoon and did 35 lengths, now aching in places I don't normally after a run! Might run in the morning but forecast says -1 degrees so I might wimp out and do the Shred instead.

5madthings · 20/02/2013 18:11

I have done my run. I have a route that is just over 5k so i di tge running as per thw couch to 10k bit and then keep going at the end as it runs out before i get hime. I can run for about four mins before slowing to walking pace for a min and then speeding back up. 4mins sounds crap but i am doing the 5k route in under 40mins each time normaly 35-37mins so i cant be that bad.

Swimming is great meg how big us the pool 25m? When i go i go to the uea pool and do 80 lengths but havent been in ages.

MegBusset · 20/02/2013 18:18

It's half the length of a standard pool (they have two pools alongside each other, one is adults only and one you can take kids in) - I actually did 70 lengths so the equivalent of 35 normal lengths.

5madthings · 20/02/2013 18:26

Standard length is 25m isnt it? Or is it 50m i cant even remember how big uea pool is. They split it in two and i go when its in two pools as when its one long pool a length takes forever! I may have to look it up now.

I feel quite energised after myrun :)

5madthings · 20/02/2013 18:58

Uea pool is a 50m pool that can be divided into two 25m with its magic moving divide. Have you ever seen them do that at uea btw meg its very impressive.

I may go for a run in the morning depending on how i feel, if not i shall go friday.

EasilyBored · 20/02/2013 19:32

Well I went out tonight after a week of coughs and colds and can't be arsedness. I did two laps of my quick route, which is about 3k. I passed loads of other runners, including one guy who was fully kitted out but not wearing any trainers as in, barefoot. Running up a main road in Manchester. Hope he kept his eyes peeled for dog shit and broken glass.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/02/2013 21:35

I'm not sure I'd want to run barefoot anywhere Confused

I did a stupid thing today, I was rushing around and managed to knee-butt a door edge really very hard, my right knee cap is blue and it bloody hurts to bend it. Bloody hop along me. Sad

Seeing if gin takes the edge off the pain at the mo.
