We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not being a numpty :)

I bought some white Sirdar Snuggly yarn yesterday, and have started on my Angel Hug. Just doing half-double crochets (US terminology, what would it be called in UK?), so that's a simple pattern. Now I just need to find a measuring tape and make sure I've eyeballed it up exactly 24" Hmm - should have done that before I got 4 rows in [grrr at self].

Jacksmania · 08/06/2013 14:16

Sorry to be a PITA, but they want then exactly 24" square?

So 28" wouldn't work?

Sigh. Silly me. Should have measured.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/06/2013 21:55

Not a pain in the arse at all Jacks.

28 is quite a lot bigger overall, I suspect they will want as close to 24" square as possible, sorry that may not have been the answer you wanted X

No problem - I've already undone it and shrunk it down and have more than the four original rows done :)

MOSagain · 10/06/2013 14:23

Have just started on squares for an angel hug but am worried it will be too plain if just 16 x plain garter stich?

size 8? blimmey, I'd been using my normal 4mm ones! Sad

PurpleFrog · 10/06/2013 15:30

What size of wool are you using BeerTricksPotter? Just wondering If you are doing the SANDS blanket above, as UK8 needles ARE 4mm! If not, sorry for butting in....

MOSagain · 10/06/2013 15:38

so I'm using the right ones then?

PurpleFrog · 10/06/2013 15:42

MOSagain - why don't you sew your garter stitch squares together so that every 2nd one is turned on its side in a sort of chequerboard pattern. This will only work if your squares really are square.

MOSagain · 10/06/2013 15:49

Grin I can only do plain squares but they are now actually square and no longer wobbly arsed! Will give that a go, thanks Purple. Just a bit worried that someone will get a boring plain one. Not tried sewing together but will give it a go when I finish them all.

tribpot · 10/06/2013 16:26

4mm is the right size needle for double knitting weight wool.

MOS, you can just do one big square - the basic SANDS pattern calls for doing a square on the diagonal (so first row, knit 1. Second row, knit front and back to make two stitches, thereafter knit 1, knit front and back, knit to end of row). This makes it very difficult for the square not to end up square!

I'm doing a plain blanket as that's what SANDS appear to have requested.

Christ, no idea what you mean by knitting on the diagonal!

tribpot · 10/06/2013 18:15

This.

Increase one stitch in every row makes a triangle. When at the right size, decrease one stitch in each row. Makes a diamond.

Rotate diamond. Voila - square.

StopEatingThatMud · 10/06/2013 23:04

I've gone for this pattern in the end.

I'm about 1/3 way through the main body which I've made 20" or so, then I'm hoping the edging will bump it up to the full 24". My tensions tight so it looks a little different to the picture but I'm hoping its plain enough.

Jacksmania · 15/06/2013 05:24

Can I ask a stupid question? Blush

Who actually gets Angel Hugs? Are they for babies who've passed away? I mean, are they buried with their blankies? (sob) :(
Or are they for their parents to keep after?
Sorry, I know I'm being dim.

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2013 06:15

Jacks, just as you think, very sadly. The Angel Hugs are for babies who are no longer with us. The SANDS blankets form part of a memory box given to parents.
The Angel Hugs sent to the Brompton wrap new angels and provide comfort. Many will choose to keep the blankets, some may decide that the blanket stays with their angel.

It is Fathers' Day and we know it will be a hard and sad day for many folk. Thinking of the families who have received our Angel Hugs, and all our crafters and donors who are missing someone they love too.

We are keeping you close in our hearts and thoughts.
Sending strength and love,

Pistey and Knotty Xx
