This is Phase 1 of what we hope, in time, will be an ongoing project.

Our basic aim is to provide little blankets and quilts that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital.

The Inspiration:
When we offered a blanket to Greengoose after her beautiful daughter Merryn passed away, she told us how Merryn had been given a small handmade blanket whilst she was in hospital. As Greengoose said,
"Merryn's little square meant and still means so much to us, and so many families end up in hospital early or unexpectedly and have nothing of their own ready or with them, and even if they do, just to know you are thought about means so much. "

We offered to make a little blanket or two, alongside our Woolly Hug, to send to the hospital to 'replace' the one that had been given to Merryn, so that another small child could be comforted as Merryn had.

And so began a bigger idea...

With Merryn's blanket in mind, and knowing how Expat's darling daughter Aillidh had so much comfort from a blanket handmade by a wonderful group of friends, we wondered if we could do something more to help.

The Project. Phase 1

We contacted a few hospitals and very early on developed a lovely relationship with Yorkhill Hospital for children, where Aillidh was treated.
This stage of the project is to provide Yorkhill with small blankets and quilts that they can give to the babies and children that are receiving treatment under their care.
The start of this project coincides with Yorkhill's fundraising week. Their website is here
We hope to develop links with other hospitals in the near future and to include them in future phases.

How you can get involved:

You can help by either making a complete Little Hug
Or
By making 6" squares using Stylecraft Special DK yarn or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK and Sublime Extra Fine Merino wool DK

For all of the Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 18 inches by 18 inches
For example, that's 3x3 6 inch squares with a small edge.
If you would like to make a blanket or quilt that is bigger, that would be lovely too.

Colours: Your choice!
We'd like to be able to provide a range of Little Hugs suitable for boys and girls.
If you would like to make something specifically for a boy or girl, that would also be lovely.

Things to avoid:
Buttons
Sequins and beads
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.
If using applique, it needs to be firmly stitched on with no hard edges.

Materials and ideas:
Woolly Blankets:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic that is a very reasonable £1.60 - £2 for 100g ball.
Pure cotton DK
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight yarn and a yarn other than those above. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be machine washed.
Ideas:
Blankets could be made from squares stitched or hooked together
Granny stripes or ripples
They could be made in one piece or in blocks, as well as squares

Quilts and stitched blankets:
Pure cotton and good quality fleece. The cotton can be from recycled sources.
We suggest that you wash both separately before sewing to allow for any difference in shrinkage.
Ideas:
Traditional style quilts, from simple square designs to more complex patterns
Cotton edged fleeces, with or without appliqué
Quilt and fleece combination: quilted front with a fleece back

Donors:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website with a message letting us know which project you are donating to. If you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste as we have other ways that you can donate.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support Thanks

Evening all - sorry been a bit awol recently but I've done one 6" square and am halfway through the next one. I think I'd really like to do a complete square and after selling some bits on ebay I now have some paypal funds squirrelled hidden from DH away so I could buy some more wool Grin.
My question is would you prefer me to do a complete little hug but there's no way it'd be ready by Saturday! or shall I send the 2 squares I've done so they can be added to someone else's squares?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 22:27

Evening all Wine

Just catching up with all PMs, has been a busy evening, thank you to everyone.

Bobkate - honestly it is about what you prefer. Do remember this is an ongoing project, so there is no rush. If you would like to take your time and go for a whole Little Hug, and it sounds like you would, please do, we will be delighted whenever it arrives, but equally we are very happy to receive separate squares.

And arf at a squirrelled away money Grin

Rightyho, skiffler, I am coming to you first Thanks

bobkate · 08/10/2012 22:45

Fab - yes I think I'd love to have a go at a whole little hug so that's what I'll do. Yay!! Grin. Now 3/4s through square 2.....Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/10/2012 06:46

That's brilliant bobkate Thanks

That's really lovely Anita and big!!

My granny stripe is on row 7 (might have made it a bit wide by not being able to tell how long 18" is Hmm) so def won't be finished by this weekend (not least because I am pausing while I try to crochet DD1 a Yoda hat for DS's Star Wars bday party in three weeks).

But almost definitely for the next deadline. You know how unreliable I am!

SoupDragon · 09/10/2012 08:23

Speaking of being reliable... :o

still only halfway through :o Elmer seemed like such a good idea in my head

craftynclothy · 09/10/2012 09:39

That is lovely Anita.

I have started a blanket based on this Tree Of Life Afgan pattern - basically I'm doing one tree picture, then I will somehow make it into an 18"+ blanket. It's not very relaxing though as it requires a lot of concentration!

bobkate · 09/10/2012 11:31

Wow I have such blanket envy. They've all been so beautiful and amazingly clever Smile. Well done everyone Smile

skiffler · 09/10/2012 12:06

Such gorgeous blankets! Starting to think mine looks a bit plain now. Still, I've found some leftover fleece - just enough for an 18inch appliqued blanket.

This is getting addictive...

nickeldaisical · 09/10/2012 12:40
Shock that tree of life is aazing!

and it looks impossible Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/10/2012 12:56

As we go along I am adding photos of all Little Hugs to a special photo album on the Woolly Hugs website

They are all gorgeous Thanks

craftynclothy · 09/10/2012 13:39

It's not too bad but you have to count carefully every row and it's hard to see the stitches at times because of the cables. I have to take a break every few rows or it makes my head bad. I don't think the colour I'm using helps - it's a khaki green sort of colour.

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/10/2012 16:49

Two packets of plain green grannies posted today. Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/10/2012 17:41

Ooo lovely, thanks Woolly Thanks

pixiestix · 09/10/2012 18:34

Three squares on their way to you Pistey, I put them in the post yesterday so hopefully will arrive soon Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/10/2012 19:08

Thank you Pixie - hopefully tomorrow Thanks

Evening all Wine

This is just a gentle reminder that the last posting for the first batch of Little Hugs is this Saturday (13th Oct)

Don't worry if you are hoping to contribute and won't be ready, remember that this is an ongoing project. Smile

The deadline for the second batch will be last posting on Saturday 1st December. When you are ready to post, please PM Pistey for the details. As always, huge and heartfelt thanks.

Wolfcub · 09/10/2012 20:24

almost finished my ripple, just the pesky ends to finish sewing in Grin.

nickeldaisical · 10/10/2012 11:58

I took my tiger home last night to do.
finally got to sit down with it at about 9o'clock, and DH took away DD. then Seb jumped up on the settee (obviously had the same idea - ooh, nickel's not got DD, i'll jump up for a play) and started playing with my wool.
so then i got annoyed.
but i still had to play with him because i haven't played for such a long time.
(we dance together. he purrs)

PurpleFrog · 10/10/2012 12:57

I finished my ripple last night. I stopped it a bit short of where I had originally intended to, as it was already longer than I had estimated. My tension had definitely slackened off after the first 6 rows or so. If I do a chainless foundation again, I will have to be very careful to do it much looser. Maybe I should go up a hook size for that row?

Anyway, the ends are all sewn in, and I will wash it tonight, and hopefully get it in the post on Friday.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/10/2012 13:26

Looking forward to seeing this tiger!

Well done to Purple and IShallWearMidnight X

All PMs replied to, huge thank yous Thanks

Thank you to everyone
