This is Phase 1 of what we hope, in time, will be an ongoing project.

Our basic aim is to provide little blankets and quilts that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital.

The Inspiration:
When we offered a blanket to Greengoose after her beautiful daughter Merryn passed away, she told us how Merryn had been given a small handmade blanket whilst she was in hospital. As Greengoose said,
"Merryn's little square meant and still means so much to us, and so many families end up in hospital early or unexpectedly and have nothing of their own ready or with them, and even if they do, just to know you are thought about means so much. "

We offered to make a little blanket or two, alongside our Woolly Hug, to send to the hospital to 'replace' the one that had been given to Merryn, so that another small child could be comforted as Merryn had.

And so began a bigger idea...

With Merryn's blanket in mind, and knowing how Expat's darling daughter Aillidh had so much comfort from a blanket handmade by a wonderful group of friends, we wondered if we could do something more to help.

The Project. Phase 1

We contacted a few hospitals and very early on developed a lovely relationship with Yorkhill Hospital for children, where Aillidh was treated.
This stage of the project is to provide Yorkhill with small blankets and quilts that they can give to the babies and children that are receiving treatment under their care.
The start of this project coincides with Yorkhill's fundraising week. Their website is here
We hope to develop links with other hospitals in the near future and to include them in future phases.

How you can get involved:

You can help by either making a complete Little Hug
Or
By making 6" squares using Stylecraft Special DK yarn or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK and Sublime Extra Fine Merino wool DK

For all of the Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 18 inches by 18 inches
For example, that's 3x3 6 inch squares with a small edge.
If you would like to make a blanket or quilt that is bigger, that would be lovely too.

Colours: Your choice!
We'd like to be able to provide a range of Little Hugs suitable for boys and girls.
If you would like to make something specifically for a boy or girl, that would also be lovely.

Things to avoid:
Buttons
Sequins and beads
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.
If using applique, it needs to be firmly stitched on with no hard edges.

Materials and ideas:
Woolly Blankets:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic that is a very reasonable £1.60 - £2 for 100g ball.
Pure cotton DK
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight yarn and a yarn other than those above. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be machine washed.
Ideas:
Blankets could be made from squares stitched or hooked together
Granny stripes or ripples
They could be made in one piece or in blocks, as well as squares

Quilts and stitched blankets:
Pure cotton and good quality fleece. The cotton can be from recycled sources.
We suggest that you wash both separately before sewing to allow for any difference in shrinkage.
Ideas:
Traditional style quilts, from simple square designs to more complex patterns
Cotton edged fleeces, with or without appliqué
Quilt and fleece combination: quilted front with a fleece back

Donors:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website with a message letting us know which project you are donating to. If you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste as we have other ways that you can donate.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support Thanks

Pistey I think my blankets are being sent today. I was panicking that they hadn't arrived with you, then saw the parcel still sat in dh's bag. Apparently he didn't go to the PO the other day, he went to the pub instead Hmm. I wouldn't mind but I met him for lunch on Friday opposite the post office and he didn't bring it then either. I'm hoping he actually does post it today (would have gone myself today but dd1 is ill and off school)

KnottyLocks · 08/10/2012 09:06

Ok, better get proper working

I can't work out why I don't love it. Maybe once it's finished and has the border on it will look better to my eyes. There's nothing wrong with it, I just don't love it. I've not had that this is right feeling with it.

KnottyLocks · 08/10/2012 09:08

Oh arse, just spotted Deramores have 20% off Stylecraft.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 09:21

Tis definitely a sign BIWI

Wolfcub · 08/10/2012 09:23

I love the woven labels. They are absolutely perfect.

PurpleFrog · 08/10/2012 09:31

The labels look great! I have just over 20 rows to do of my not-so-little-ripple-hug, so could probably make the first wave! Shock When you say last posting date is 13th October is that 1st or 2nd class? I'm glad Wolfcub asked about washing - I had been wondering that too. I think I will probably give mine a quick wash before posting....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 09:52

Second class on 13th October is absolutely fine, thank you purple Thanks

GlaikitFizzog · 08/10/2012 10:52

I'll be washing my little hug after ds had a bit of a chew on it!

PurpleFrog · 08/10/2012 13:09

Great! I should be able to make that deadline. Smile

I always wash my hands before settling down to knit or crochet, but I know that there is bound to be some dog hair on my little hug, picked up from my clothes etc. so it is probably safer to give it a wash, after going over it with a pair of tweezers. Luckily, at 14, my dd is too old to chew my blanket.... although I have shouted at her before for licking the dog! Hmm

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 13:23

But purple - honestly no worries if you don't, we'll come up with a second deadline soon, it's all good Smile

Fizzy - you need to feed that poor child Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 08/10/2012 13:38

Teething pistey! He chews everything right now. The handle of my new bag got a gnashing recently! I am having to rethink my baby proofing!

nickeldaisical · 08/10/2012 13:51

actually, regarding washing woolly hugs if you have pets
wouldn't it be better if we sent those without washing?

mainly because - for some unknown reason, the cat hairs get bloody everywhere - even on washed stuff (and Seb has a habit of rubbing himself up against wet stuff)

Would it be better if they were sent to the collectors with a tag "pets live here" so that the collectors can wash them to make sure that hairs haven't got onto them after they have been washed?

PurpleFrog · 08/10/2012 14:23

Hmm - that's a point - my laundry hangs in the dining room which is a dog-free zone, but I can't guarantee there are absolutely no hairs wafting around in there. I will concentrate on finishing the crocheting then see what the consensus is.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 14:30

If you are worried - send them, I can sort them out Thanks

StellaMarie · 08/10/2012 15:00

Hello, sorry to come to the party late! I thought I had signed up for this project already but must have had a conversation with myself (I blame it on the lack of sleep)!
Anyway - I have nearly finished my Little Hug and hope it can be included!
Who should I send it too?
Thanks!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 15:03

Grin Bless you Stella, glad to have you with us officially!

The last posting date for this first batch is this Saturday, so you aren't late at all. I shall PM you now with all the details Thanks

StellaMarie · 08/10/2012 15:05

Thanks Pistey, will let you know when it's been finished and sent!

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 08/10/2012 16:29

Sadly I'm not going to be able to make the first deadline, but will continue and hopefully be more than ready for the next deadline.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2012 17:59

Thank you FryOne Thanks

They will be very warmly received whenever they arrive X

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 08/10/2012 18:04

Thanks.

And the offer of the flannel cot bed sheets for the quilters is still open. They're a lemony colour but still more or less okay..Grin

NellVarnish · 08/10/2012 20:03

Wine Aw cheers Knotty, and Grin at tartan grannies Pistey!

skiffler · 08/10/2012 20:05

Found some wonderfully soft yarn in the stash and just finished crocheting a blanket. I have some other pretty stuff but it's really harsh and scratchy. I might try washing a swatch to see if it softens up a bit...

FryOne - I'd like to do a quilt with your flannel sheets. My fabric stash is far larger than my wool stash...

Pistey - can you PM me with details of where to send etc?

KnottyLocks · 08/10/2012 20:15

Wine Evening all.

FryOne, thanks for the offer of the sheets. Smile Are you ok to send them straight to Skiffler?
