Following on from the terrible news of the loss of Mumof2TeenBoys' ds, a new Woolly Hugs project has been started and, as ever, MNers have stepped up to offer whatever little comfort we can to Mumof and her family. We also keep close in our thoughts Aillidh, the dd of expatinscotland, who died yesterday.

We've put together some general info mostly about knitting but with some crochet bits thrown in, which should get you started but please feel free to ask for any help - I'm not sure if the crocheters are going to set up a new support thread but their current one is found here.

Please dive in - we will inevitably end up talking bollocks rubbish at some point but all are welcome aboard.

Have ordered now....hope it's the right shades but we'll see what they look like when they arrive :) Who'd have thought it'd be such a minefield!

PurplePidjin · 12/07/2012 17:34

Matters of personal taste are really hard to judge.

the early blankets i did are a real mishmash, i just put all the squares in a bag and grabbed the next one out Blush Knotty's the one for smart layouts!

But the point is the love, not the style. This is an expression of our hearts breaking for James, Aillidh and their families.

Thanks

I've almost finished my squares. Just have a zillion ends to weave in!

soremummy · 13/07/2012 10:33

Well done x

Glaikit · 13/07/2012 11:06

No knitting for me today, packing for holidays tomorrow. But I plan on lots of k tithing when we are away!

ThisIsNotWhatIWasAfter · 13/07/2012 11:33

signing in, my wool arrived this morning so as sign as i can persuade the small people to give me peace I'll be getting started. I'll probably be doing simple squares because my post baby brain can't cope with anything complicated. Tried to knit an old shall throw a few weeks ago but lace and sleep deprivation don't mix.

PurplePidjin · 13/07/2012 12:45

I have soft pink and dove grey woolliness, Thanks Donor :)

HairyPotter · 13/07/2012 13:26

I have two wonky squares ready to post for Mumof2's blanket. Who am I pming? Is it Pistey this time?

Also wondering how many squares to do for Expat and giraffes? Would usually try 2 per blanket but are you going to have too many squares? Happy to do 1 or 2 though.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/07/2012 13:58

Yes please Hairy - PM me. Out at the mo, will send you posting details but thank you x

And yes we have had the most amazing response it is true, one or two for each blanket would be good. Thanks

MinnieBar · 13/07/2012 14:22

Trib - sorry for not responding to your as usual very helpful advice, I've been up to my eyeballs in work projects.

I did sort of start off with the one-ball-per-section technique, but I just ended up with too many. Say it's a knit row, with colour A and colour B, the pattern goes something like:
A8, B3, A2, B4, A1, B2, A5, B3, A2, B5, A1, B3, A8 (total example), followed by (purl row):
A8, B2, A4, B3, A1, B2, A4 etc. etc. - so not even a straightforward match-up.

I'm fine with doing it my wool-in-mouth way - tis easier than having eight or so balls, that's for sure - and it looks ok both front and back, so I'm not overly worried. It's just I know not very deep down that it's terribly unprofessional. Ah well.

tribpot · 13/07/2012 14:51

Yup Minnie, intarsia needs quite a lot of planning to do - you literally have to count how many stitches are in each area and then create bobbins of the appropriate lengths. They don't have to be exact matches in each row, you can carry yarn a short distance (3 stitches) to make the right pattern. Apparently if you're doing a very complicated intarsia it can get to the point where you have to plop all the bobbins down on a tray and then turn the tray around, as turning the work is too liable to end up in spaghetti junction Shock

I have just received a pink and a cream ball of Debbie Bliss from Cucumberpatch, thank you to whoever kindly donated it.

MyNewCatIsFab · 13/07/2012 15:23

I ordered my wool last Sunday and I'm still waiting, expected to have some squares finished by this point!

Glaikit · 13/07/2012 15:31

Quick question as I have a break from packing. Is it ok to mix all the yarns? I've mixed the rowan and Debbie bliss before, but does the sublime mix in ok?
